What Is Kusanagi-no-Tsurugi? According to legend, the sword "Kusanagi-no-Tsurugi"(草薙剣, the sword of grass-sweeping) came from the tail of the legendary eight-headed and eight-tailed serpent/dragon "Yamata-no-Orochi"(八岐大蛇), and today, it is one of the three sacred treasures of Japan. It is also known as Yaegaki-no-Tsurugi(八重垣剣, the sword of eightfold wall), Tsumukari(-no-Tachi)(都牟刈(の太刀), (the blade of) head-cutting) or Ama-no-Murakumo-no-Tsurugi(天叢雲剣, the sword of gathering clouds in the sky). ("Head-cutting" here might mean the blade of the sword "Ame-no-Habakiri-no-Tsurugi"(天羽々斬剣) broke against Kusanagi-no-Tsurugi inside the tail of Yamata-no-Orochi.) Legend has it that the sword was amazingly hard and had never even been nicked, much less broken.
