Күн бұрын

In one generation, China has taken Africa by storm going all in on everything from big infrastructure projects, mining and agriculture to the sale of medicine and clothing. At a time when superpower tensions are spiking.
China-Africa summit accusations of corruption of African elites and unscrupulous deals that catch nations on the continent in a debt trap somehow ring louder. Beijing's defenders counter that despite the debt relief of two decades ago, former colonial powers like France, Britain and Portugal are hardly in any position to criticise. Of course, the truth is more nuanced.
France 24 went to Zambia to meet some of the one million plus Chinese who've left their homes to make a new life on the other side of the world. We hear from them and from locals who are of two minds as to what many describe as a whole new world order in that resource-rich former British colony.

The France 24 documentary had an objective to demonize the Chinese. Majority of the things happening in Zambia or Africa as a whole regarding to Chinese ‘investments’ has a lot to do with the weak country regulations. For example as a country we can simply say the Chinese can help us with infrastructure, Energy production etc (high capital investment projects). But we should be able to have an industrial policy that protects citizens from unfair competition. F24 should do a documentary on how the former French colonies are still having to be France’s pons.

@michaelteng6076
@michaelteng6076 3 жыл бұрын
@@elppadiordnakerhs2867 western countries never wanted African continent to develop so they can continue to steal Africans resources and enslaved them. One must realise that natural resources in this world is already getting scarce and if more continents developed the scarcity will become even greater. European and US already faces stiff competition from Asian countries and if African continent developed they will most likely be out of business and loses a lot of advantages and benefits. The wave of development started in Europe, US, Japan, Taiwan and Korea together, South East Asian countries and China and now China is taking it to Africa because of the natural resources in Africa and the labor in Africa is much lower than China and other Asian countries which are most suitable for manufacturing and also of saving transportation costs. It is a great opportunity for African countries to develop with China's win win business model and knowhow. They are applying the same successful model as what they did back in China and now for it to succeed all that is needed is stability in Africa. Regarding waves of Chinese starting businesses in Africa is a great thing also for African countries, it will improve the quality and competitive edge of African people just like how it happened in UAE and other countries. Let the Chinese initiate the process and soon you will find African people will follow in the business. A journey of a thousand miles starts from first step, without it, it will never be realized. Rwanda 20 to 25 years back were in civil war and now look at how much they have changed and developed. Don't believe about the death trap, some people have spread this in order to scare and prevent African countries from developing. Never marry into too big a social strata, you might find yourself in a difficult situation someday. It is always easier to speak to someone who is in the same position as you are.

The documentary clearly had an agenda. At one point they were showing displaced Zambians who said they were lacking water and then sliced to the Chinese CEO in a massive fish pond as if to suggest it’s his fault. He had nothing to do with their displacement but the suggestion that the Chinese were taking the water was clear. I’m glad they had the producer on, he absolutely embarrassed himself on the Chinese chicken story. It looked like he knew nothing on the subject and just spent a few hours there getting anti China sound bites rather than getting facts.

I'm glad Solange came, she provided eye-opening facts that the Western countries never did, and that gave us a more clear understanding of what's been going on in Zambia. There's definitely much work to be done as Grieve said, in terms of labor laws, competition in restricted markets, etc. Because locals need to be protected against Chinese competition in these markets. But overall this segment has been a lot more eye-opening not so much in a negative sense, but in bringing more clarification to what's been going on in Zambia. It's clear that the West has been painting a far more negative picture of China's presence there and in much of Africa, in order to create stigma, most probably because they are losing their slices of free pies. This is all sickening, it really is. But let's see what happens during and after the elections. I don't have much hope, but a little bit is better than nothing.

Such a nice debate and am glad to see that the discussion was based on objective reality and of course with 'look east policy' and the old western terminology of 'suspious little chinese man up to something'. But what can be said is that states regardless of what state (democracy or authoritarian) are self-oriented and as Zambia a nation I call home heads towards economic development (I believe every country is on a path of development and what determines is it's pace of development), we needs to master the globe politics and economics between the western (lead by the US-EU) hemisphere and eastern hemisphere (lead by China and India). And at the end of the day, the mindset of trickle down economics in relations to China's growth won't drain down to man or woman as well as a youth in Malambwa village hoping for a better future today. As such a Zambian - Africa oriented approach, one based on culture of Ubuntu and the economic model that would compete on a 21 century world order. And one more thing the chinese selling chicken was actually big deal amongst locals in the country's capital and not necessarily a 'western driven tropers' as pointed by Solange Guo Chatelard lol. All in all It was an enlightening interaction from both panelists I would say.

@8:00 the chicken stories is a stupid one: I grew up in China and saw this first hand; in the late 1980s and early 1990s, Taiwanese/Philipino farmers came to mainland China and began to set up chicken farms across my provinces: it was a devasting blow to Chinese farmer since that most of Chinese chicken at the time were considered organic farmed (typical size is a couple hundred chicken per farm); consequently, the Chinese farmers were not able to compete against them because their chicken was cheaper and the growth cycle was shorter. So the Chinese farmers began to work for and learn from their opponents and diversify the chicken economy: they started similar industrial farms to compete against the Taiwanese farms: they sourced the baby chicken from American, and they bought American grow mix since that they are modified for the Chinese market. About 2000, some farmers discovered free-range/bio chickens can be sold at 4 times the price of farmed chicken so they began to rent out mountains to raise free-range/ bio chicken for the rich. I remembered China was afraid all our companies might die after joining WTO: one of the arguments at the time was that our agricultural technology is inferior to Europe and the USA; our steel industry was inferior to Japanese and Korean. Just let me tell everyone one thing: my company used to source all our raw material from USA; however, over the last 3 years we began to source from Chinese local provider and phase out American from our supply chain; we find out Chinese Titanium producer is IMPROVING EVERY YEAR in terms of Q/A and last year they are on par with American for corrosion/fatigue-related performance which they spent the last 20 years perfecting their crafts to reach "implant" grade. I always find people who argue for "stick to what my ancestor did" tend to be stupid/dumb ones: they think people don't change to adapt to survive.

You may have a point but one thing I know a lot of industries flooded your country from the USA leaving the US with no manufacturing whatsoever. A lot of skills was also transferred to China and a lot of Chinese living in the USA came back home to help develop. China never let visitors get land permits and mine stuff. When I lived in China, all Chinese markets were filled with Chinese traders. I never saw small shops run by foreigners in China. China was good setting up boundaries for foreigners something not happening in Africa. When it did - Tanzania for instance the President showed up dead. That's the difference.

@@ajokeemmanuel4649 Stop lying and demonizing China. China's birth rate is so low that its population will reduce by 50% by 2100. Sub Saharan African countries' birth rates are leading the world, followed by central Asia, the Philippines, the middle east and Latin America.

As a Zambian watching this, the only thing unsatisfying about the Chinese dominance in Zambia is the luck of transparency in the manner in which the economy is being run. The Zambian govt should man up and dictate their own terms when indulging themselves in international relations and most importantly keep foreigners in check so as not to dominate the local market e.g anything that is accessible in Zambia should never be imported.

The government needs to look out for their people. The Chinese know selling their products cheaper will take away customers from the natives.

I am not Chinese, but Africa were colonised by the West. What had the colonisers done? Sure, they came to make money, at the same time they contributed by investing skills and money. Same as what US did in China and now in Vietnam, Bangladesh, Indonesia etc..

Colonisation also created slaves issue. That’s the biggest difference compared with the investment today.
