Mexico’s city of Culiacán besieged by organised crime amid violence in Sinaloa state

On October 1, Claudia Sheinbaum took office as president of Mexico. She inherits a country where organised crime still rules in many regions; a deadly situation that her predecessor, Andrés Manuel López Obrador, failed to curb. More than 30,000 murders are still committed each year, and on average, 29 people disappear every day without a trace. The city of Culiacán, in the northwestern state of Sinaloa, has recently become the symbol of this violent epidemic. Our correspondents Laurence Cuvillier, Quentin Duval and Ed Augustin report.

@@mariovillicana6290not exactly, one thing is not focusing on Sinaloa, which used to be relatively non violent, but focusing on those from other regions, but he didn't give a damn because he thought that the guys from Sinaloa would take care of everything instead of having inside fights. Which was a dumb idea specially considering that the major heads were on jail. Obrador trusted too much on the sons of El Chapo, but the guys from Mayo now in detention can spill the beans on what kind of agreements they had with him, therefore putting the Morena government between the rock and the hard place.

I had to drive through Sinaloa last month and the fear was palpable. After Mazatlan the freeway was almost empty and even before Mazatlan a few of the toll plazas were unmanned. I later learned that said plazas had only recently been liberated after being taken over by the cartel. Suffice it to say I went 90-100 mph through most of the state wearing a hat and sunglasses to hide that I was a foreigner. Pretty sure this made me stick out more lol A huge shoutout (and a God bless) to the toll collectors, gas station attendants and convenience store workers who are risking their lives for the pittance they are most likely paid.

They know who the big fish are and where they are hiding. Problem is many in the police departments and jurys are corrupt and sellouts for the cartels and ALSO CNDH, National commission for Human Rights always steps in the way of justice and cares more about the rights of Criminals than honest and innocent civilians.
