I love the luminosity of watercolor and preserving the white is so important for that. This was great.

Uuuggg, crazy fingers!!!. As I was saying, you certainly don’t have to take all of the time to help us, but that is the kind of person you are. All else was already said by other loving followers of yours…you are truly gifted, you have all my respect 🙏🏼♥️🎃

Thank you very much. I think I like to research and document above all, and for me it always made sense to share, in an easier and more condensed way. I really enjoy KZbin despite the work one video takes, and I'm glad you are enjoying the end result from all of this 🙂

Francoise, Ton anglais est meilleur que mon français! Thanks ever so much for sharing your talents and knowledge! Tonal contrast is really necessary for impact. The first workshop I took many years ago was with the famous watercolorist, Tony Couch. He stated that paintings often have too many middle values, not enough darks or white paper. He trained under Ed Whitney, who used to stand in the hall and yell, "Paint darker!", knowing it was good advice for most of the class. I still fail to leave enough white paper, feeling it looks unnatural, but regret when it is covered. And that is one huge bottle of masking fluid! You must use a lot, as it would dry out on me. Is it Pebeo? I like that, as it can be thinned with water.

Can u use acrylic paint for highlights? I never used Guash ( not sure how to spell ) . What would be the difference ? Thank you your videos really helped me a lot . I’m a acrylic painter trying watercolor and the highlights is what is hurting me

Yes but it's not as flexible as gouache. It's easy to remove gouache or make it lighter or more opaque. I feel like acrylics area bit risky on watercolor if you need to touch it up or remove.it would be harder.

I’m just getting into gouache and am already seeing the amount of white I go through. I couldn’t make it out in the video, but would you share what gigantic tube you are using? Is it acrylic possibly ? Love your work.

Thank you 🙂 it's a Lefranc Bourgeois tempera white, I used it since the start because my brother gave it to me, so it might not be the best one out there 🙂

Thank you for this video, it just came at the right time for me. I still find it a bit intimidating to keep the highlights paper white or go darker with the shadows but it really adds so much dimension to a painting. It was in fact a very similar painting with rocks by the water where I got aware how much lighter and darker I have to go. Is the landscape painting with the rocks going to be a class on Skillshare or Patreon? Thanks!

I'm glad this came as a right time! It seems like an ongoing struggle to keep whites for a watercolor artist 🙂 the rock painting is so large it took 5 hours total so I avoid those as classes or tutorials. thank you anyways for letting me know this resonated with you, and taking the time, it's much appreciated 🙌

@@paintingandchocolate It seems so 😄...I bought the book "Watercolor you can do it" and was amazed how much glowing white you can have in a painting 😅. Ah, yes, you are right, I remember sitting many hours over mine, too 😮‍💨.It looks great, I would be happy if you could just crop it and have a few rocks. The painting looks fantastic!

Do you ever work from life, rather than a photo? Is the approach and the experience different?
@paintingandchocolate

Not often. I have in my town. I find it's hard at first to focus just on the thing you want to paint and also,.colors can appear less appealing in real life over photoshopped photos, things we can change as painters if we wish, a skill to be developped.
