Francis I Of France - RIVAL Of Holy Roman Emperor Charles V: Francis I, King of France was born on September 12, 1494 at Cognac Castle and died on March 31, 1547 at Rambouillet Castle. He was also called the Knight King, French François Ier, le Roi-Chevalier and was a French king from the House of Valois-Angoulême, a collateral line of the House of Valois.
François was anointed King of France on January 25, 1515 in Reims Cathedral and ruled the country until his death in 1547. Domestically, the king's reign laid the foundations for absolute monarchy and the Huguenot Wars. Externally, Francois fought against the universal monarchy of the Habsburg Charles V in the Italian Wars.

I've always felt that at the Field of Cloth of Gold that after being so courtly to each that both monarchs, when they were back in their private apartments and full of wine, they must have said the most horrible things about each other. Like Churchill in Moscow shouting insults about Stalin and Russians in his hotel room until he was told, shut up, the room is bugged.

Another excellent video. One thing I've always considered a bit hypocritical of revolutionaries is when the case of France that and England that dug up and threw away the bodies of the kings, is that they don't acknowledge that they wouldn't have a kingdom to overthrow unless it had been for those kings that developed the country.

Fantastic video. I find the historical French royals to have been very smart in their foreign policy. They did not just emphasise on having Catholic allies but also Muslim ones ( like Morocco and the Ottoman Empire) as well as Protestant ones (like Sweden and the Palatinate). France's ability to make friends with different nations with different cultures has helped them a great number of times in history.

I searched for almost 20 years unyil finally found some Information on the period where Francis was imprisoned in Madrid area And only released when he agreed to handover his two sons to take his place . They sufferEd emotionally and health wise because of it. Back in the seventies I was told that they were not luxurious cells as some are claiming today and it was a family of long standing royal jailers. I found the family and the location and the tower still stands today. This info is slowly coming to light now. the trade for the children was made in a small river between France and Spain at Hendaye.

About ten years ago I was reading Jay Weidners book on decoding 'the mysteries of the Great Cross of Hendaye' which was near the river and the island which had been used as prisoner exchanges for long time. francis 3rd who was 8 yrs old and younger brother Henry 2nd were held for 3 years by Charles 1st of Spain to ensure Francis abide by the treaty of Madrid. it was said that they were scarred for life and the dauphin's health never recovered from the dank cells which matches what I was told in 1980. but recently it has been reported that they were treated like guests and brought their servants. this may be because the name of the family of royal jailers (of which I had been a member of) was uncovered

Casa and Torre of the Lujanes family (also royal jailers) in the Austria District, Old Madrid. The Casa/house, which possesses a patio in its interior, was rendered a major renovation by Juan de Luján during the last part of the 1400´s. There were interesting stories behind the Tower and Casa, the most popular is that the tower acted as a prison to French King Francis I after he was defeated and captured during the 1525 Battle of Pavia. He signed the Treaty of Madrid in January 1526, declaring that the word and signature of an imprisoned knight were valueless and that it was beyond his power to dismember his kingdom. Still imprisioned and bedridden from battle wounds and syphillis, he was betrothed by proxy to Eleonora, widow of the King of Portugal and sister of his jailer. The wedding was to seal the reconciliation of the two rulers and was to follow execution of the treaty. As a last condition, Francis had to deliver his two eldest sons, seven and eight years old, as hostages. 4 years later In order to get his children back, Francis had to abandon his allies, give up Italy, and pay 2,000,000 gold crowns. His foolish expenditures had emptied the treasury, and the ransom was collected only with difficulty. Finally, however, the little princes were able to attend their father’s political marriage to Eleonora in 1530.

Francois was related to Catherine of Aragon, of course, by marriage to her niece Eleanor, elder sister of his sworn enemy, Charles. And Charles' wife Isabella was the sister of John of Portugal, whose wife was Mary Tudor, sister of Henry VIII. And John and Isabella were the stepchildren of Eleanor from her first marriage. I became interested in this period/family only recently, and there is so much DRAMA.

As fascinating as his times are, I think Francois I is one of the worst French kings, whose achievements don't live up to his aims. He only won Marignano 'cos the Venetians arrived to save him in his recklessness, a recklessness that led him to getting captured by Charles V. His arrogance led one of the most powerful nobles, the Duke of Bourbon, to join Charles V. His obsession with Italy nearly brought the kingdom to ruin. He was the Most Christian King and yet allied himself with the Ottomans. I think the Field of the Cloth of Gold is actually quite an apt metaphor for his reign: grand and showy with big intentions, but ultimately an extravagant, expensive let-down.

Gosh, good question. I'm a bit torn about that because I did a few videos like that, eg the one on François Ravaillac, or Nostradamus, and they perform rather poorly on my channel so I think they're not really what the majority of my viewers want to see. I have videos already prepared about Karl Wilhelm Naundorff as pretender to be Louis XVII and a video about the man in the iron mask, so I'm gonna see how they perform now. If they also attract less interest then maybe it's not wise, although I would like to...
