Quick rectification: this makes it sound like Francis II did a Charles V and gave up all power to retire somewhere. He didn't. He'd created the title of Emperor of Austria and the Austrian Empire (made up of the Habsburg territories like Austria, Bohemia-Moravia and Hungary) in 1804. So essentially he gave up one useless title for one with actual power over the territory he cared about.

That's right. Francis II knew that the Holy Roman Empire would not last much longer (all states were already part of the Confederation of the Rhine and only Prussia and Austria were still formally part of the HRE). And because Napoleon had himself crowned Emperor of the French in 1804, it was to be expected that he would soon be the only ruler with the title of Emperor in the western world, which Francis II could not accept. For this reason he formed the Austrian Empire in order to preserve the equality of rank with Napoleon as Emperor. Under pressure from Napoleon, he had to dissolve the HRE in 1806, making Austria and Prussia de facto sovereign states for the first time. From 1804 to 1806 Franz was the only double emperor in the world. As Francis II Emperor of the Holy Roman Empire and as Francis I Emperor of Austria.

Good to note that Francis also elevated the various Hapsburg realms (Austria, Bohemia, Hungary...) into an empire of his own after Napoleon crowned himself emperor of the French. I imagine even he realized that his title over the HRE didn't mean anything at that point and that he might as well create a new legit empire out of the land he had actual direct rule over. Sucks that he then found himself at the head of a multiethnic state just when nationalism really started picking up...
@Avghistorian77 Жыл бұрын
To be fair, he didn’t really have to deal with that as much as the next rulers. Ferdinand I had abdicated during 1848 due to the riots and revolutions, and then Fraz Joseph’s entire rule was pretty much dealing with those Ethnic Minorities.

About the last point though: nobody wanted the HRE's crown in its current state at the time. But they did want to continue the idea of a German Empire. That's what was officially stated in 1848/49. And even when William I of Prussia took on his new title as German Emperor he did so in direct reference to the HRE. They also attempted to get the actual physical crown kept in Vienna but the Habsburgs had no interest giving it to them so they went ahead without it but designed a new crown that looked remarkably similar.

It's official name was just "The Empire" or the roman empire. The holy part was something first mentioned in a document of Emperor Frederick Barbarossa, and the others just kinda went along with it
@Itachi9510003 жыл бұрын
@@RafitoOoO No it is not. It only became true as a result of the Thirty Years' War. That was the biginning of the end for the HRE. Voltaire's quote dates back to the 1740's, so it was already true at the time but shouldn't be used to describe the HRE for the entirety of its history. Keep that in mind.

Love these videos. Informative, concise and witty. I have read quite a bit about the Napoleonic Wars, but never heard or seen this addressed. Maybe the channel could do a video on The League of Armed Neutrality? Maybe the Quasi War between America and Revolutionary France? The coup 18 Brumaire that brought Napoleon to power? The assassination of Tsar Paul I? The two bombardments of Copenhagen by Britain? Maybe a video on Bernadotte becoming ruler of Sweden and the political shenanigans of aligning himself against Napoleon? A video about the trial of Louis XVI, being convicted of treason and executed? A video about the breakup of Denmark and Norway? ((I am unsure how this relates to the broader political, military and economic struggle of the Napoleonic era, but I believe this happens within the Napoleonic Wars.)) There is so much that happens during and leading up to the Napoleonic Wars and yet it tends to be discussed in broad general strokes.

Just one precision about a mistake often being made when talking about Napoleon : He did not declare a SINGLE war. Yes, you read well. All the wars were declared either by the British, the Prussians, the Austrians or the Russians. (Althoug in the end it kinda was all Britain since they just payed countries to fight for them). If you don't believe it just check all the coalition wars and you will see that France mostly defended itself. The fact is the neighbouring countries were simply too afraid of the revolutionary ideas that were continued by Napoleon (another misconception : Napoleon did end the first French republic but kept most of its new administrative and civil law aspects) and he perpetuated the individual freedoms obtained through the revolution with the obvious exception of democratic rights. All of this to say that portraying him as a malevolent conquest thirsty tyrant is a bit incorrect. He was perhaps a tyrant in France but the conquests he performed during his reign were reactional, and when Britain/Pussia/Austria declare war upon you five times in a row in spite of just having signed a peace treaty you start wanting to permanently hamper their hability to attack you.
