Thanks for posting this rarity. One of Poulenc's greatest pieces, which deserves to rank with his "Stabat Mater" (1950) & "Gloria" (1959). Incidentally, following the world premiere by the New York Philharmonic, the orchestra received letters from many audience members who were unprepared for, and extremely upset by the scapegoating of "the Jews" in the traditional liturgical text. The "répons des Ténèbres" were a part of the "office des Ténèbres" during the Holay week. They were intertwinned with "Leçons" from the book of Jeremiah, Hpay Paaul and Holy Augustine during the night offices. Her, Poulenc chose to illsurtate seven of these 'Répons". His language is adapted to each of the "Répons", sometimes very harsh for him. The renddering here is excellent.

The work was commissioned by Poulenc's friend Leonard Bernstein for the opening of Lincoln Center. Poulenc didn't quite get to the end for the fall 1962 deadline. I think the references to Jews ("Judas delivered him to the Jews") may have been enough to cause Bernstein to relegate the premiere (which followed fast upon Poulenc's death) to Thomas Schippers in early 1963. ( Bernstein did perform the Gloria later on). Wilfred Mellers in his study of Poulenc calls it his finest religious work. But it is scarcely known, unlike the Gloria written just before.

Excellente performance : bravo à tous! Dommage pour le choix du soliste adulte à la place d'une voix d'enfant... Cela dit, la soliste est formidable! Certains passages mériteraient d'être dirigés en chiromique plutôt qu'en mesure pour donner plus de phrasé, sinon, la direction est précise et intelligente...
