Hi guys. Watched this clip and thought I’d drop in my thoughts. In general as you said not having a worthwhile warranty plan for your Chinese wheels is a problem for a start. This creates the possibility for some manufacturers to cut a few corners to bring in these products at this crazy price point. That should alone set a few alarms going. Maybe you get lucky as Francis has but I wouldn’t go looking for potholes.. From what I can tell here. The side wall thickness is optimistic at best. The other, and more important issue we have seen for some years is ‘dry carbon’ meaning the prepreg carbon simply does not contain enough ‘glue’ to bind the carbon fibers. They are getting away with it on frames if the paint work is good but it’s new territory for wheel makers looking to skimp on manufacturing costs, why? 2 things spoke tensions exacerbated by impacts/vibration. This wheel has failed on the seamline of the tire wall. Basically the outer side wall delaminates when the bond is poor. It used to be spoke pull-throughs, a problem a few years back as some of your subscribers will attest to. Poor choice of where to put carbon and unreliable supply chains lead to variable quality. Who checks these batches..mm let me think…you do!

Glad Jimmy made the Chinese section clear. I was the UK distributor for a far eastern brand. There is good and bad chinese direct carbon. I did my research as a former sceptical product design engineer. I found there's good and bad Chinese carbon and I totally agree accountability is key. I ensured they met ISO and EN stds. Of the sales we made over two years for wheels and frames I only ever had 1 crash damaged and one warranty issue and in both cases the brand replaced without question. The comprises with china direct is shipping time approx (2-6wks) depending on supplier and stock.

I was quite impressed recently when I tried some Aliexpress DT Swiss 52 tooth ratchet knockoffs. For the price compared to the legit product I figured it was worth a try. They worked beautifully, sounded great for... five kilometers. The parts broke on a short, punchy and somewhat aggressive climb. I contacted the seller, they offered to replace the parts. I told them I didn't have confidence in the product and would really prefer a refund so I can buy the genuine product. They said ok, and gave me the refund. I think they are getting better with warranty and customer service but it is still a a case by case thing as there is so many manufacturers/sellers.

I'm currently using a chinese hub using the DT Swiss ratchet standard. The fact that its parts are almost all replaceable if ever they go wrong is amazing. I literally don't have to worry about getting a new one if they fail on me. I'll just have to get a new set of ratchets or bearings and it'll work again, good as new.

As an "OLD GUY" cyclist / LBS mechanic from the 1990s I love a great frame pump. Anyone rememeber the neon yellow Zefal frame pumps? Who else remembers high pressures to avoid pinch flats, or worse heavy anti puncture solutions like thicker tubes? That being said new tech is the best. Go TUBELESS!!!! I've been tubeless on my MTB since 2001. In 2010 I converted my Mavic Krysruim Aniversiary road wheels to tubeless, with little more than valve stems, Hutchinson Fusion tubeless tires, and tubeless sealant. Since then I've never looked back. In all those years (yes once you reach 50+ you talk in years and decades) I've had so few flats while riding I can count them on 2 hands. I'd say less than 10 flats requiring road / trailside fixes in over 20 years is a solid argument for tubeless. Note I still carry a spare tube, CO2 canisters, and patches on each ride just in case. What to do with a $600 euro floor pump? Same thing you do with a $260 euro Colnago corkscrew. Sip expensive vintage wine while working on your Colnago Master next to your Ferrari GTO or Austin Martin DB5.

Just as a public service announcement, Silca stuff is discounted 30% right now on Amazon. The only problem I have with their lube is that I've now ridden 16,000 km on my KMC chain, waxed with Silca and treated weekly with Super Secret. The damn thing just won't wear out, and I've got a custom celeste colored replacement waiting in the wings to put on my Bianchi. At this point, I may just have to accept that Silca has made my drivetrain immortal.
@chris1275cc

I know you are joking but it is the only downside I have found to waxing. I've noticed that at a glance all the chainrings on all my bikes look excessively worn, because there is no dirty oil to disguise where the anodizing has gone from the teeth, and because of waxing I'll have those rings for a very long time.

Josh actually saved the Italian Silca brand legendary Pista floor pump. When he traveled to Italy to offer to buy the brand for the Italian owner. The company have already sold their factory and all their equipment. So they had to visit several craftsmen to order each specific part made to build him a Silca floor pump.

I was lucky enough for my Chinese manufacturers to cheap-out on carbon on my 88mm deep section wheels, by replacing it with fibreglass. I crashed into a car, blew the tyre out, but the wheel survived. I had it checked by a carbon specialist, and he said the fibreglass saved it. Double win... heavy though.

I am still using a Silca Track pump I bought in the Seventies, still works, pressure gage is still accurate, but the grommet in the connector had to replaced 2 years ago🙄 Even the polythene sleeve it came in still protects it. If you need a word to define quality, “Silca” nails it👏

Yes, I have been waiting on the review for these wheels as well. It is my understanding that Ryet is a subsidiary of Uno, a Taiwanese company, the same company that sponsors a pro bike team. You would think their quality would be better. I puchased a set of Ryet wheels at $390.00 that looks like the ones Frances bought, not like the ones Pierre bought. Look closely, they are different models from the same company. I have ridden over 3000 miles on these wheels since my purchase in February 2023 without problem. The advertisement said the wheels would weigh 1730g, they weighed in at 1750g. Heavy? Okay I guess so but, as advertised. Hunt all season aluminium are about the same weigh, for the sake of the weenies. I'm kinda disappointed that you didn't have your wheels checked by one of your carbon expert "mates" to ensure the soundness of your wheels. I would have been curious to find out since you and I bought the same model of wheel but that is my prejudice. Overall a good piece of journalism even though it wasn't complete. Thanks for the entertainment.😂

Talking about the lack of QC in the cheap products is also a factor of them being cheap. Adding steps in the factory to ensure consistency before shipping. After checking every product, the ones that wouldn’t be to standard get thrown out not boxed up and sent to a customer. So the higher cost is partially paying for the materials/labor of the rejects which adds cost.

I've seen a similar behaviour in a wheel in which the inside of the wheel pressurised whilst someone was setting up tubeless. If the rim tape or valve hole leak heavily when using a compressor or chamber type pump its possible to pressurise the chamber inside the wheel and cause delamination like this.

I was looking at Ryet after your unboxing but decided to go with Elitewheel but in the end got a very good deal for Lun Hyper. The reason why I didn't go for Ryet is 1. You took a long time to post any thoughts on them which means there might be a problem 2. The aliexpress review sections have alot of defect reviews as well, carbon delamination in all of their product from bikes to wheels and handlebar. When compared to Elitewheels it doesn't have delamination problems. It's just way too much of a risk to get Ryet

Latest is their Edge 36T. 3 friends bought from them, & one after 2 years got a replacement. He paid 99p for shipping, it didn’t take long to get over. It’s clear that Ryet’s model is not very good at all when things do go wrong. Just be wary of your purchases. In our cycling club, we buy from a diverse variety of brands. There were issues with 1. Giant’s hub, replaced by dealer. 2. Problems with VEL wheels, one wheel replaced This isn’t bad out of 60 off cyclists in the club.

Silca has been around for over 50 years. I have custom painted Silca frame pumps (with Chrome Campy pump heads) on a couple of steel bikes that were made in the 70's with pumps from that era. The original Silca made nice products at affordable prices and was mainly known for hand and floor pumps and brass air chucks. The Silca name was later purchased and the new Silca went very high end and broadened their product line. The current Silca is nothing like the traditional one and only shares the name......

I had a beautiful red SILCA pump stolen out of the back of my Jeep Cherokee in the mid 90s. I recall paying a lot of money for it back then, and I never replaced it. Nice to see if I ever needed a very overpriced yet really nice SILCA pump, I could get one.

Ok So I have a Matone saddle bag on my road bike and it's super nice...hold just the right amount of stuff. I had their seat roll before that and...nah...the Matone is better. I also have that work stand widget...its great and easy to use. It's expensive becuase of the surgical silicon that is used on the "round" mount points. Josh wanted something that wouldn't draw the die out of your frame. I guess some rubber does that? Dunno but I feel it's just safe to have and not clamp carbon, ever. The chain prep stuff revolutionizes the chain waxing process. No more multi step stripping...I was skeptical initially but tired it and it's fantastic. I'm going to assume the surprise at the end is some Ti shop tool(s)? They look amazing but I just can't justify the cost.

I'm very happy with Silca's products and very happy to see you sponsored by them! I've had nothing but success with their pumps, hot melt wax, chain stripper, drip wax, tubeless sealant, garmin mount, and bar tape. I recommend their stuff to everyone because how many other brands do so well across such a broad range of categories? If they make a product I need more of or need to replace I look to see if they offer it first because they have earned my trust as a very high quality/best offering I've found. Silca may be expensive but in a lot of cases the competitor's products at the same/near same price are noticeably worse, inferior engineering, or don't last as long. Hot take: Josh is like the bike Steve Jobs. Innovating way ahead of the competition. Carbon in the sealant to form a "fibrin clot" similar to human hemostasis, pebax bar tape (that's the foam in the nike marathon shoes winning almost everything), all in one chain stripper that' isn't terrible for you/environment (look at how people used to strip chains), emulsified drip wax(this is some chemistry magic), sous vide bag hot melt wax(so you don't need a wax pot removing the major barrier of entry genius)...nobody else is doing some of this stuff and if they are it's typically that brand's sole focus! Don't change Silca!!!!

Sometimes it's not even about the QC it's about the laws / quality standards. For example, it's possible that for some parts depending on the batch size prododuced an Acceptable Quality Limit (AQL) can be used to check a specified sample size and if all of those parts pass (or in some cases there's a tolerance for allowable fails) then the batch passes and moves on to the next phase. While there could be bad QC's, bad parts doesn't automatically mean the QC is bad, it is possible that it's just a dud in the batch.

I own too many Silca products, the Tattico is still my favourite pump, including the full-frame pump. A comparison with the gravel version might be a future video idea?

as long as you don't apply too much pressure using a bike stand on a carbon top tube is no worse that lifting your bike up with your hand by the top tube.

a had a very similar problem with Yoeleo Carbon wheels. They are another chinese manufacturer and supposedly have a bigger emphasis on QA. The Rims even cost 800€ instead of just 240£. The tyrebed sepperated from the rest of the rim very simmilar as the wheels in this video, you can see them seperating at 1:27. Also Yoeleo refused to replace my wheels because they were a couple of months out of warranty.

auto mechanics aerosol brake cleaner is a much cheaper way to clean chains. it leaves no film so a denatured alcohol bath is not necessary. apply emulsified chain wax directly to the chain.

It's quite possible that many off-brand products don't meet the quality control standards set by the major brands they're produced for. To avoid financial losses, manufacturers might opt to sell these products on the secondary market. It's a plausible explanation for the variance in quality between branded and off-brand items.

I bought XC carbon wheels from Velobuild that failed to kill me or, at the very least, send me to the hospital. When I bought their frame VB offered the wheels, I replied that I wanted these customized with an specific hub and spokes (bitex and sapim), so we agreed on price. The bike was then built at the local bike shop and I rode it for mere 350 Kms before the incident. I was starting a downhill at only 55KPH when it happened. We all heard a bang and the bike started skidding... I was so lucky it was the rear wheel that cracked... I was able to control and brake. It was the back rim that cracked. You can see a hairline fracture going between 2 spokes along the edge of the deep profile, by the same radial area you see a crack that cut the inner tube, it exploded and opened the rim. Velobuild never honored the warranty and insisted in a car accident despite me sending pictures of the bike in pristine condition (and no spokes bent or broken)

In my experience the biggest issue chinese brands have is consistency. Many brands only try to win over first time buyers with price, and they have very little (or no) QC, and also keep changing the product names and numbers every few weeks or months, so it's impossible to recommend, because by the time there is some experience with the quality of a product, it's off the shelves and there are news ones which are again of unknown quality. This is also not helped by the fact that their product descriptions are written like SEO-s, so it's nearly impossible to tell what specification they come with. I had years of experience running a local earphones community, and we barely had any chinese products as recommended, because they were so inconsistent. There are some reputable brands of course, but those tend to move towards localised reseller networks instead of selling on aliexpress.

They essentially have no consumer protection laws or even copyright as we know it in China. It ends up a roll of the dice on a lot of stuff. We all buy good stuff from them on a regular basis, but really, you just never know... I think Trace Velo said it best, although this is not a quote: YOU are the QC with a lot of it.

I actually think Ryet did alright by offering replacement based on pictures and videos. I wouldn't have minded paying little shipping cost, end of the day, it's coming from opposite side of the world. Shit sellers could have ghosted or blamed rider, which many renowned brands actually do. With a famous European brand, I had to ship back wheelset for their QC to check my claims and whole process was quite tiring. I'd rather pay less than a third price from Chinese direct sellers.

Sh*t the bed at the state of that rim! While everyone loves "carbon" and on paper it has legitimate, tangible advantages; in practice composites are finnicky at the best of times in terms of consistency of manufacture, ease of inspection and failure characteristics. Throw into that a lack of transparancy / accountability in the supply chain and the potentially very serious repercussions of a failure in use... and I remain wary of even high-end stuff from "reputable" brands. Of course a decent warranty is a good thing; although probably of secondary importance if the product's failure has resulted in a period of 25mph+ face-surfing on the tarmac / gravel. An informative and entertaining vid as always - looking forward to your findings with the sealant and wax (am a proper convert of the latter; albeit the council DIY approach) :)

Good to see you saying this. I have extensive experience moulding composites, consequently, I ride a metal bike with metal rims. For bicycle frames and wheels etc, the moulding is taking place inside the mould where the laminate cannot be seen. This will always introduce an element of plain old fashioned luck. When reduced weight is the aim, the situation gets even worse.

@@chris1275ccI've got one that they class as an MTB saddle on my winter bike. It's a bit squishier than the short-nosed one they do but still comfy and after around 300mi no visible issues. Great value for the price as you know, as the finish is as good as any top end brand.

I don't have an issue with the service Ryet offered. The wheels are sold with very low margins. To cover the shipping for a replacement wheel seems fair to me. Yes, you could spend 10x the amount and get a free replacement at a local shop, but you are paying for it in the upfront cost. Can't expect the best quality and after sales service for the lowest price.

That's essentially what happens when we buy from Ali. Sometimes we receive good stuff, some others bad stuff. The quality is not consistent. In the end, it's a gamble. And that's why I stick with alloy when I buy from China. If I wanted a carbon frame, or wheels or a handlebar I would get it from big brands, even though you pay for the branding, but you also get warranty, R&D and so on.
