We have had lots of 20mph limits introduced in West Oxfordshire, the roads are quieter (sound wise), after the first couple of weeks everyone chilled out so its more relaxed when driving and best of all the 32-35kph that everyone drives at is the perfect speed to get a nice slipstream from a car when on the bike.

We've had it in Edinburgh for a while now. I'd say completely roughly that 5% comply with 20mph, 75% go at about 25-30mph and the remaining 20% go as fast as they can, just like they did before.@@theanswer00

30km/h speed limit in Valencian cities / villages is a godsend. Kids playing outside are much safer. Quality of life has improved because there is less noise and pollution. It does not really affect how long it takes me to get from A to B in a car but riding through city traffic is less stressful (my garmin agrees). When on the bike I respect that speed limit, no need to look like a muppet pretending to take part in the vuelta. If the training plan calls for long, constant, hard efforts I stick to the backroads going around the cities.

Just wanted to thank you for all this informative content. I’ve got back into cycling after 20 years away and 10 years of CrossFit. I was so lost about everything from bikes to pedals to gears. Watching all your videos about entry level bikes and all your great advice stopped me blowing £££. Been cycling now for 2 months on a entry level Ribble with 105’s and upgraded wheels all in £899. I absolutely love it and can’t thank you enough for all this great content. I love Jimmy’s channel where the bikes are built! I could watch those for hours. Anyway just wanted to thank you.

It has deeply impacted the intensity of rides i'm willing to go on and kept me from racing. I guess i should have just seen a doctor and asked. 😅 TDIL, i need to spend plenty of time cooling down.

@jimmy about your suggested speed limits. I think in the Netherlands the speed limits are as suggested. 30kp/h (18 mph) inside neighbourhoods, 50 (30 mph) inside the city/village, 80 (48mph) on bigger roads between cities and 100-130 (60-78) on the motorway.

Up to a point, lower speed limits might actually IMPROVE journey times, because it will make journey times more reliable by reducing accident rates and making traffic flow smoother and more consistent. Taking urban motorways down from 45-60 to 35-50, meaningfully enforcing 30 on arterial streets and lowering side streets to 20-25 strikes me as a very reasonable thing to do, and would likely prevent you from having to pad your journey time as much in case of contingencies.....as well as making it safer for biking and walking.

Zwift haven’t established themselves with gamified features - it is a virtual cycling platform and that’s what drew people to it. These controllers and gimmicks will turn people off. They’ve opened the door for other platforms to come in and take their core business.

The whole Zwift in-game controller thing, in my opinion, is just a bit crap really. But, I guess it depends on what you're using it for. Some (like myself) use it purely as a training tool so I can train indoors and get a lot of benefit from it, but as you say, some see it as a game and use it as such.
@out_spocken
@out_spocken Жыл бұрын
Agreed. turning what should remain a training program in a virtual world into a game. The idea a crapper rider can 'beat' a stronger rider because they play the game better completely eats the legitimacy of the program.

I think Zwift in general is a bit "stupid". I mean why don't you go out and ride the bike yourself? I can understand that you want some simulation in winter days and that it can be fun, but this is way too costly in my opinion.
@CycletheNation
@CycletheNation 7 ай бұрын
@@Vixen1525 £13 a month isn't costly, especially if you compare that to incremental drivetrain degradation over a whole winter. I ride outside when I can, but with awful conditions in the winter, and the ability to stick to training plans / power numbers, Zwift is a great training tool for an alternative.

Regarding the electric car debate: of course those cars arent THE solution, but its part of it. It seems to me many people misunderstand it when talking about the topic. @@redauwg911 So quickly nothing more to say to my arguments? Besides other environmental or health costs caused by combustion engines, as the podcast mentioned it already, fuel is often subsidized. The increased road repairs shouldn't be a big issue consequently. I don't think categories like being vegan or not are helpful to improve the situation. With seeing how hard this word seems to trigger groups and fuels an absolutely ridiculous culture debate it seems to do the opposite. Because changing our consumption behaviour is an inevitable part of necessary changes we have to do.

I'm not familiar with the sources of electric grid in the UK but in the US it is mostly natural gas & coal. So using electric cars being charged on the public grid aren't really green. The car is only as green as the source of the electricity.

Whenever I get to work I have to lock it up, take lights off, stow my helmet blah blah. when I leave the same in reverse. I don't need some lumpy shit bike bag to deal with as well when I have a nice comfy bag on my back. PS. On the subject or reducing speed limits that you experienced in Scotland, we had a temprary 50mph limit imposed on the A483 Wrexham bypass, which was done after monitoring emission figures. This was a few years ago, but is now permanent. I'm all for speed reductions anyway, but it seems that the readings were taken from the side of the road that is a few metres from a business park, i.e. Morrisons, Curry PC world, Boots etc., which probably had a high turnover of traffic driving around in low gears. Probably adding to the high pollution level. So they decided to reduce the 70mph limit(dual carriageway) to 50mph. I'm happy with that anyway, but the amount of social media feedback about, "there will be even more pollution when drivers accelerate back up to 70mph", etc. was huge. All I've got to say to the government is "don't fabricate a ficticious excuse to do it, just do it"

I had the same discussion about riding the roads that were quieter compared to busier main roads with more traffic. Because of lanes with National Speed limit, they feel they have the right to go faster meaning more close calls with faster cars equalling a higher rate in serious injury/fatality. They felt the right to go 60 because they were allowed and not manage their speed to the road conditions, where I can commute and feel safer because the roads are busier and slower speed limits and just get 'bumped'. There was more to it than this as it got heated but this was part of what the discussion was relating to your comments about where you live to city riding.

And for that the pedestrians feel safer, don't have to deal with engine noise, and traffic fatalities will be reduced. Oh, the travesty...
