I have a Carrera Crossfire 2 which I use to commute. I appreciate the suspension because the potholes en route are cavernous and in order to use/access the short & pitiful bike lanes, you have to traverse curbs and stretches of pavement that feel like riding a jackhammer. Nice video Edit: Yes, the triple is awful

Those old wheels are 27”. It was an odd size and I had trouble getting tires even 20 years ago. However the ones that I could find were 1-1/4” knobby tires which are quite similar to gravel ties now. So they were far ahead of their time. But it also means that a lot of those frames are kinda junk today as the brakes are set up for those wheels and it’s hard to even fit a new 700c set of wheels.
@kgramckow
@kgramckow 6 ай бұрын
Yeah I’ve had a couple old 27” wheel frames. Surprisingly I could still buy new 27 tires last year (somewhat terrible hard “commuter” 27/1.25) but yeah that was probably very old stock. Most of them seem to work with 700c tires if you buy long reach brakes, and I had to drill out the brake mounting points to fit the recessed nut type brakes. After spreading the rear triangle from 126mm to 130 you can put new drivetrain stuff on it. Voila, dirt cheap road/urban/lock it up in a city bike.

A good bike is one that makes you feel like you want to go for a ride because you're confident that it will reliably get you to where you want to go safely and in relative comfort. I see a lot of cheaper bikes that seem to fill these requirements even though they might lack many of the questionable features that are being marketed on top end bikes.

I’ve got Carrera Crossfire 1 that I bought for £250 in 2016 (since then it’s had a new gearset, wheels, and brakes). I recently did a 3 day loop of London to Bristol - circa 280 miles. The suspension is heavy and pointless like they mentioned, and the flat handle bars suck after about 70k but I’m happy that bike got a run around and even if now I’m looking to replace it with a gravel bike. I could never get rid of it

18:10 I partially agree with that, on more sportive bikes like road bikes/Gravel/Cyclocross, mountain bikes in most iterations where almost all have a diamond frame (except some fancy fullies) you don't really need these gender-specific stuff make these unisex with a wide selection of colours, however on the more "casual" bike styles like city bikes, trekking etc. they often have diamond frames and step-through frames (trapezoid with the top tube lower where it meets the seat tube already at approximately half the height where a diamond frame would or mixte frame with two thin top tubes) or even low-entry frames that only have one thick down tube without a top tube or these geometries like ISY bikes or foldable bikes have. Because these can be easily ridden wearing skirts and dresses, from my experience it's also possible to ride wearing these on diamond frames if they aren't longer than knee length and aren't too tight (like a pencil skirt), maybe have a back slit, but better don't try it with longer dresses/skirts and this is where step-through frames come in and this is also one distinction of most scooters (like the legendary Vespa) compared to larger motorcycles.

I use a dropper on my cx commuter for comfy, safer breaks at stop lights and to fit in my gf sedan when i meet her at her job (20 ish miles away) to go out and eat and drive back. It prevents me from having to take off my seatpost everytime and ruining its saved position and alignment. Plus nicer to sit on a bike and warm up out of the parking lot when its slammed, luxury

I’m with Francis on not speccing suspension forks on every bike. In the Netherlands loads of touring/city/daily driver bikes come with those. Performance is poor, heavy as f_ck and a rigid fork would liberate some budget to spend in a more reasonable place.

Yeah, my Suntours on my MTB wouldn’t lock out, so tightened them but now there isn’t any movement. Am in no rush to repair them as I’m happy with my 38mm on my gravel bike going over rough stuff, so why bother with suspension when I have even wider tyres on my MTB

Balloon Tires win over suspension forks for slow city bikes IMO

If you get to 60, you'll begin to appreciate even a SunTour fork.

@@lysanatt when I rode an e-bike with suspension fork and seat post, I found it too unpredictable, it's not really safe to ride IMO. Almost catapults you back when you go up a sidewalk, almost threw me off. And suffice it to say I don't think reflexes are gonna get better over the next 24 years, so I'm wary. Of course that bike may just have too soft and bouncy suspension, I don't know, it never saw the inside of a bike shop or suspension maintenance after purchase.

@@JulianAndresKlode agree 100%. Less maintenance, more reliable and, if you ask me, a better ride than those cheap suspension forks.
