Fa. Dean has written a beautiful little paperback named: A Primer on the Absolute Primacy Of Christ (130 pages in paperback). It's an easy read that has the Scriptural references, histories, diagrams and supporting quotes building out this talk. I purchased it "new" for a pittance and it had my highlighter smokin' from the preface to the conclusion. We must get back to First Truths; which have been obscured by their fragments. .. peace to all

Thumbs up. A very interesting idea about absolute primacy of Christ. This seems to harmonize very well with my understanding of scripture. I have no choice but to continue looking for ways to apply these ideas in daily life. Why "no choice" ??? For me life would have no sense of purpose without the logic of the bible. It seems to make everything else fall into a proper and reasonable place. Of course in our day there are many scoffers. They think "The bible is logical ???" *How absurd* . . . they might say. Let them.

How does the absolute primacy of Christ regarding the Incarnation square with the Creed of Nicaea which says: /Qui propter nos hómines et propter nostram salútem descéndit de cælis/ ?

Scotus considers this as the response to sin, but not the original intent nor the primary reason for the incarnation, which was predestined. Fr. Maximilian Mary Dean covers this in Cornerstone #16: kzbin.info/www/bejne/ioOrcnePjsxkf7s

There is no question among the Franciscans of Christ coming "for our salvation" - but is that the primary motive? the only motive? There are 2 simple responses to this line in the Creed - First, "for us men AND for our salvation" (2 distinct reasons). So even if Adam had not sinned Christ would have come for us men as our Mediator; because of sin He also comes as our Redeemer to save us. Second, redemption from sin is only one form of salvation according to St. Irenaeus; there is also a preservative redemption. Joseph in the Old Testament was called the "savior of the world" because he preserved everyone from starvation. Our Lady, conceived without sin, was preserved from sin by Christ her Savior. St. Bernard of Clairvaux speaks of Christ being the Savior of the good Angels by preserving them from falling.

Just to add a little note of humor to things: an Orthodox priest I once knew said jokingly that Duns Scotus name came, not from the word for Scotsman, but from the word σκότος, dark (obscure). This is just a joke, of course; but it makes me think of the title given to him: Subtilis.

"The people that sat in darkness, hath seen great light: and to them that sat in the region of the shadow of death, light is sprung up." (Is. 9:2; Mt. 4:16) 😇 Bl. John Duns Scotus - a light shining out of the darkness.
