Can't Stop Losing You was the Police's first chart entry here, and made number 42. I didn't hear it yet at the time but I'm pretty sure I started hearing Roxanne at about that time - it must have been someone at my school who was playing it. Months later Roxanne became a hit, reaching number 12 in the early summer of 1979. Then,at the start of July that year,Can't Stand Losing You came into the charts, which was when I started hearing it,and made it all the way up to number 2 by the end of that month. And so,the Police's stellar career took off, with their next single Message in a Bottle taking two weeks to go to number 1 and the popularity of their first two albums Outlandos D'amour and Regatta de Blanc.

'Eve of the War', 'Summer Night City', 'Rasputin', 'Teenage Kicks' & 'Hopelessly Devoted to You' are my personal favourites. Interesting to see the original version of 'I Can't Stop Loving You' by Leo Sayer, I much prefer Phil Collins' cover version though. Thanks for the great video! 😃

Thank you for an insight into this period 44 years ago. I do prefer 74-79 a lot more than the 70-73 era. This is a decade I am acquainting myself with. The first song is an obvious parody of the Grease film. John and Olivia they ain't! 'Summer Night City' is a classic. One of ABBAs best. My #1 here. Fascinating how pop, disco and rock all merge well in this great song. Many bonus points for the Grease soundtrack songs. My all time favourite movie (I ain't ashamed to admit that) and the songs from the movie here are my favourites on here. I still can't believe Olivia Newton-John is dead still. A very beautiful and talented woman. It's hard to pick other favourites here as there are many good songs. Disco at it's peak, some excellent soul and funk here and rock on fire too. Got to admit I do love the Motorhead cover of 'Louie, Louie'. I know this is a competitive chart, but it deserved a Top 20! Plus you can't go wrong with Queen 👍 I am shocked 'Teenage Kicks' wasn't a bigger hit and that's very well known and has been covered a few times. A bit of a downfall for Paul McCartney and Wings there, as they had a huge #1 the end of 77 / early 78. Donna Summer, another great singer that's well missed too. This is a time of legendary acts and downright great songs. I'm surprised the Sham 69 song hasn't been readapted again for England in the World Cup (it was in either Euro 2004 / Germany 2006 World Cup) especially as it's appropriate for both Harry Kane and Maguire. It's amazing as well how that Foreigner song is very well known in the US, yet wasn't a hit here in the UK.

Another great upload. Love Elvis Costello, although his earlier hits didn't chart that high they live on forever.

You can tell Grease was popular at this time. Still a good movie now even though the bloody woke brigade want it banned. That lot can do one.

lmfao. literally, who wants grease banned? like maybe 5 people? yeah, mate...huge discourse about banning grease. get a life.

There is one song that I hate the most in this set, but as a whole it is more interesting than I thought. It's strange how many songs I heard for the first time in the 80's and 90's as covers (e.g. 1:02 - Madonna, 1:57 - I can't remember who it was in the 90's, 2:04 - Fine Young Cannibals, 2:09 - the boy band of the Stock Aitken Waterman stable, I think Big Fun or something like that ....)
