Please what is the use of the counter voltage and which kind of excitation takes place in the Hg atom ?

asslam u alikum mam, why we use only mercury in this experiment and no otter gases?

One good reason is that one can easily and safely manipulate mercury. It is enough to have a liquid drop in the tube to heat it in order to produce the gas as many times as desired. Moreover, one can control the right temperature to have the best density and pressure conditions for the experiment. On the other hand the original experiment by Franck-Hertz used mercury (although it is true that they were in principle more interested in measuring the ionization energy of mercury). Mercury is is also convenient for its first excitation energy is low: 4.9 eV and for the fact that the probability for the second excitation (6.7 eV) to occur is much lower what makes the experiment to produce very clean and distinctive results by using accelerating voltages up to 30 eV. In undergraduate labs Neon is also used. As its excitation enegy is bigger than for mercury one has to go to higher acceleration voltages.

@@pedrogonzalezmarhuenda4546 I'm doing this experiment later today with Neon in my 215 class. I'm watching this video to understand how it's different from the Photoelectric effect in proving the existence of quantized energy
