You join me out on what was one of my first trips of 2017 and in search of one of my favourite river species the Chub.
Armed with my Symetre 500FL reel and link leger, I try to see if I can winkle out a few using bread, cheese paste,maggots, worms and a light helping of liquidised bread. Please be warned that due to a hook pull I do partially transform into the hulk at around 8:50 in this video.
Please excuse the night time footage when I am playing one of the fish as it is not the best of quality.
Thanks to each and everyone of you for the continued support of my channel.
Follow me on Instagram: / fishing_for_memories
Kindest Regards
Mark

Don't appologise for showing us your chub techniques mate! there are a lot of niche, fishing specific breed vids around, and it is good to show how you go about targetting chub in this type of water, I for one really love this info and hope to get some success following your advice! regards.

Hello Mark. I've only recently found your video's and I have to say what a breath of fresh air you are. Its a pleasure to watch you fishing because you just get on with it. Too many anglers bore us to death when they try push their favourite hooks or line or knots on us, you just fish and to be honest I think you're video's are the best I've seen. I have subscribed so please keep them coming my friend.

Thanks Miff, glad you enjoy the videos so much, I agree with the marketing side during some videos. With myself if an item is good I will mention it and if it is poorly made or not suitable I will also state it, that will not ever change. I like to show my fishing trips as exactly how they can be and I guess each one is a bit of a story in itself. Thank you for taking the time to subscribe, do you have an instagram account by any chance? If so I have received some spam accounts lately and think if you have just followed me that I might have made a bit of a mistake me on there. Apologies in advance.

Another hard earned reward Mark and another excellent video , we all lose some fish once in a while but it was entertaining to watch your reaction as i am sure we ALL feel that way when we do?. My first ever fish was a Chub ( so many years ago ) in a very small river on bread , so i have a love also for that species , it was in the Tiny River Tove at a place called Bozenham Mill near where i used to live in Northamptonshire , i used to fish either the River there or the nearby Canal at least 3 times a week. Sometimes after school in summer I would walk the 3 miles to these places just to get some time in . This brings me on to my next point. The River had lots of Undercut banks ( it was , probably still is ? ) along its twisty length between the Canal and the little road bridge , i didnt have any quiver tip rod or ledgering rod back then , i just had my little 9ft glass rod and a 3 metre lerc glass fibre pole , but i remember reading ( Angling Times ) an article on Touch Ledgering and gave it a go. It took me a few trips to perfect but it was a case of learning how to get the bait into the undercut bank and keep it static whilst a bite developed , i had chub to 4lb 6ounce , i was 12 back then . So have you ever done a Video on Touch ledgering ?, i think you would find it very rewarding, never any Barbel back in those days , so it will be worth it freelining a big bait for either species . Personally its something i have not done for about 15 years , but i think i might try and do it again soon down here in surrey where i now live , on some of the smaller rivers.

Thank you Colin for taking the time to write such an in-depth and interesting comment and for sharing your own childhood angling experiences,that was most interesting to read. I have touched ledgered in the past but I have never made a video on it, although I will say that the majority of my touch ledgering has been whilst chub fishing. I think that is a brilliant suggestion for a video and would like to thank you for it.

Hi Mark Planning to go for Chub on the Loddon on Friday. It's pretty coloured and fast when I looked today. Would you change tactics at all? I think I'll have to step up the lead to hold bottom. Any advice please. Many Thanks Gav..
@francolinobasco
@francolinobasco 7 жыл бұрын
Hello GT, personally the Loddon will be fining off nicely right now as will its feeder rivers. If you are heading out on Friday and the section you plan to fish is still up and pushing I would recommend targeting some slack areas, or areas just off the main flow, perhaps where there might be features that break the flow and act as fish holding zones, bare in mind that fish like to conserve energy levels so will be looking to hold up in such areas, fish either a straight lead (doesn't need to be too large if you fish with a bow in your line) or small but weighty feeder. However that said never be surprised how well you can trundle and also hold bottom with a link leger in such conditions, Tuesday afternoon I was fishing with five foot of extra water on one of the rivers with 2x 2ssg and holding bottom when I wanted to in quite a few swims with the rod tip up and a bow in the line to decrease the pressure of the flow. I'm not sure if you are targeting chub or barbel, I will presume chub, in which case do take some liquidised bread with you to feed in, as well as bread,cheese paste and worms. I cannot overstate the importance of worms to most river anglers, especially as a river is fining down from high or flood conditions as what will have happened during the flooding is numerous food sources will be swept in from the land into the river, worms, slugs and worm casts. I know it may sound daft but the last item that I mention there really does act as a food source in its own right too. I hope that is of some help and best of luck to you tomorrow mate.
@gavt3082
@gavt3082 7 жыл бұрын
That's brilliant. Many thanks Mark. Yes it's chub I'm after but wouldn't turn down a barbel I must admit! I have just made a new batch of your recipe cheese paste which looks really good. I've also got liquidised bread and flake but couldn't get to the shop today to get worms unfortunately. I am going to try some luncheon meat soaked in spicy sausage flavour but I must admit that the cheese paste smells much better. Many thanks for your help. Gav..

Hello Alexandru and thank you, I am guessing that you fish the Bristol Avon perhaps? I always try to look after my captures and release them in hope that they might pay another angler a visit. The problem is there is so much that the fish have to fight against to survive, from poaching,pollution, water removal, cormorants and crayfish to name some of the problems our rivers face.
@MrMalarix
@MrMalarix 7 жыл бұрын
Oh , thou some of my friends work in Bristol I actualy live in Romania, I was just refering to the river Putna, a very special small river, as an avon. I am sorry to hear that there are problems in UK also, but belive me it could be a lot worse, in fact in the romanian match anglers comunity we speak of UK wild fish as the standard, but I guess this doesn't come easy and these problems need to adresed constantly.

No need to apologise whatsoever mark,if you want to go chubbing. As usual,it`s a great video,what ever you go fishing for and in these often challenging winter conditions,chub are normally very obliging,when other fish just don`t seem interested.Where you were fishing,looks ideal for trotting with a pin reel........I`d of been very tempted,esspecially as I`m making some perch bobs and chubber type floats at the min.The trouble is,you can`t really cast them into those tight spots like a ledger set up.Tight lines mark,all the best .
@francolinobasco
@francolinobasco 7 жыл бұрын
Cheers Nick and yes you are absolutely right there are some superb trotting runs, which would more than make up for a the lack of access with float in the tighter swims. You're making some floats? Sounds nice, a couple of seasons ago I made some perch bobs using the inside from cans of Boddingtons, the aerator/ plastic widget as the body these lent themselves well and can be used for presenting small live baits or double lob worm.

hi Mark. you've got the thumbs up on that blog mate cracking session! could you please show us the link ledger rig in a closer detail and shoe us how you allow the ability to lengthen and shorten the rig without breaking it down? and how do you incorporate the large shot on the running ring bead, is it attached to the bead by a swivel of some description? well done on another quality blog!!
@francolinobasco
@francolinobasco 7 жыл бұрын
Hello Julian my fellow chub angler, glad you enjoyed the video, I will certainly do a video to show that. Yes the shot is connected via a loop of line which goes through the swivel and doubles back on itself in a loop, with the two shot attached. The buffer bead is moveable due to using only a rubber rig stop.

Hi, I was just wondering, would you use pastry or bread to make your cheese paste, does it matter, why would you use pastry instead of bread or bread instead of pastry. Also, what rig would you if for small rivers for chub? Sorry for all of the questions. also, your fishing videos are brilliant and so helpful. I've watched loads of the chub videos. Thanks for your help and time From Jack
@jackbryant7227
@jackbryant7227 7 жыл бұрын
what rigs do you use and how do you set them up? thanks
@francolinobasco
@francolinobasco 7 жыл бұрын
Hello Jack and thank you, a lot of it is down to personal preference and you will find that there are some anglers who prefer a short crust pastry, cheese paste and others whom prefer bread as a base and although I have used both, my preference is towards a bread cheese paste mixture, I generally prefer it as it's more pliable and as I am someone that prefers to fish his cheese paste round the shank of the hook due to wary bites being easier to connect with than on a hair rig where at times fish can be apprehensive and nip at the paste on the hair, I find a bread mix lends itself better. However a pastry mix has its own merits, particularly if you are planning on a hair rig presentation as you can create a more solid paste by using pastry and fish this on a hair using a paste cage or cork ball, or an Enterprise tackle "paste mate".You can always mix in some margarine if you wish to make the paste softer. For the simple and effective link leger rig that I use if you check video 99 I show the rig during that particular video. Kindest regards Mark

@francolinobasco
@francolinobasco 7 жыл бұрын
Thanks David, I wouldn't say you are wrong, but it does depend how much they are confidently feeding and of course if there are any other chub in the swim to take up the baton so to speak and replace the fish that you have pricked should it have made an exit from the swim to sulk elsewhere.

Nice productive 1st session for the year, glad you had some fish. Can I suggest when you have camera rolling, that you add some light (few lines) running commentary at each spot rather than summing up at the end. The commentary helps to keep the viewer interested rather than waiting for you to get a bite. i.e. Indicate what bait you are using at any particular spot, what bait is most productive, and why you choose particular spots to catch the chub or other species. Look forward to your next video.
@francolinobasco
@francolinobasco 7 жыл бұрын
Thanks Jan, if you check most of my videos I do generally cover swim selection and why, but I can understand that me not necessarily doing it as much on this particular video can cause some confusion. I do try to keep commentary to as bare minimum as possible as Dunk Edwards has suggested so as not spook the fish, which is why I as you have pointed out that I try to sum things up at the end of fishing a swim, as it's usually less of a negative impact when moving on. Thanks for pointing it out and I will perhaps try prior to fishing a swim to point out a few things before fishing and filming directly in it.
@francolinobasco
@francolinobasco 7 жыл бұрын

Thanks James, glad you enjoyed the video. The landing net is a wychwood quickfold landing net, these are available in sizes from 22inch 25 and 30inch. As much as I really dislike the company for their shoddy after sales service mainly due to having a rod break on me earlier this year and not receiving any communications back from them regarding it, I do actually like this landing net as it folds down compactly and has a magnet system to pin any material excess up which is nice. The 22 inch is about £14. Hope that is of some help and thanks once again for taking the time to watch the video.

Mark, I notice you don't often use a chair or seat when river fishing.Don't you feel the damp or are they a specialist trousers that you wear? Looking forward to this years batch of videos. And don't apologise for making another Chub video, I love watching them. The quality of your videos are 2nd to none on KZbin. The picture quality makes the viewer feel like they are there with you. Hello Ady, I do try to avoid carrying a chair as my lightest weighs about 4 kilos, so I generally sit on the ground and that is not exactly healthy nor sensible given how things are. The trousers are not specialist, whilst they are fast drying but not waterproof so I do tend to feel the damp and cold through them once I have sat in a swim. Thank you so much for the kind appraisal I really appreciate it and that is why I do try to always carry my main camera about in tandem with a go-pro as I want to give the viewer the best possible video I can at times. I have actually fished the Warks Avon on a couple of vacations and immensely enjoyed it.
