Can we know with complete certainty who wrote the different books in the Old Testament? Did Moses write the Pentateuch or were others involved? Frank explains why none of this actually matters if you’re a Christian.

Scott Seufert Jesus actually died and all the evidence shows he rose from the dead. Jesus died by crucifixion His disciples had experiences that they beleived were appearances of the risen Jesus Because of their beleif that he was raised it was the event that turned the world upside down religiously. Non beleiving Jews during The time even aknowleged that Christianity is a resurrection religion, it was the resurrection that powered the religion and powered the teachings even to the point of being willing to die We have 1st century sources of 3 large name Christians who died for this beleif It was proclaimed very early. You can track the resurrection preaching back to immediately after the cross and even Bart ehrman atheist agnostic admits when Paul said yes to Jesus when he was on the road to Damascus there was multiple creeds about the death deity and resurrection of Jesus. James the brother of Jesus became a Christian after the death of Jesus because he beleived he saw the risen Jesus. He was not a believer before that. Also Paul an enemy of the message preached became a Christian because he beleived he experienced the risen Jesus

Scott Seufert you should pick up the Bible the most sold book of all time no book even comes close and study it, this god you have is a made up entity in your own mind, the God I serve created the Heavens and the earth and EVERYTHING in it, The God I serve is outside of Space outside of Time and outside of Matter OR he wouldn’t be GOD, “I am Alpha and Omega, the beginning and the ending, saith the Lord, which is, and which was, and which is to come, the Almighty.” ‭‭Revelation‬ ‭1:8‬ ‭KJV‬‬

@@gwmcklintock Jesus proclaimed the new covenant in his blood at the last supper,so when you take communion you are in essence saying you are under His new covenant and not the old mosaic covenant, which was only for the Israelites until the coming of Christ.

@@GentleSerpent the New Covenant under Jesus did away with the blood Covenant for atonement. If did not do away with and statutes and commands given to Moses from the Almighty. Something as serious as that Jesus would have been very specific. If you did away with what Moses wrote and The Old Testament, why did he quote it so often?

I think one thing in particular what many Christians fail to miss is where the Bible was written: The East. Eastern world views are very different from Westerners. Eastern people didn't care about every small detail and do not feel compelled to write down every single detail. Melchizedek is a prime example. There is a mystery to who he was, yet we know Abraham encountered him and saw that he was holy and offered sacrifices to God. The OT is very mysterious to the WEST because we see mystery, yet the mysteries are more powerful from the Eastern view point, but in the WEST...it frustrates people so they doubt it's validity.

There will be another person that rises from the dead. He will be shot in the head. Or at least they will make it seem like he rises from the dead. That is not Good enough. Revelation 13:3, NIV: "One of the heads of the beast seemed to have had a fatal wound, but the fatal wound had been healed. The whole world was filled with wonder and followed the beast."

What helped me greatly when I was trying to believe All of the bible had to say, was to pray, "I believe, Lord help my unbelief!" After that prayer, Jesus opened my hears & eyes to so much more understanding of His Word, a cannot express the change that took place in me!

First of all, the Bible is not really A book. It's a compilation of writings. The more people wrote the Bible, the more authentic it is. Many writers from different regions give authencity that the stories actually happened and that Christianity truly was a big movement.

It was a “big movement”. No it wasn’t, it was a small movement that mainly met in secret. It was only when Constantine chose to make Christianity the Roman religion that it became “big”. 🤦‍♂️

@@danpilgrim1785 False! Constantin legalised Christianity to stabilize the empire, he wasn't even a Christian himself. He became Christian shortly before his death. He also didn't make Christianity the only religion in Rome, that happened 70 years later.

@@brilliantbeaches5389 it still wasn’t a big movement. A couple of city states in Greece and elsewhere and it’s a “big movement”? Christianity was a small sect that took in gentiles and Jews who converted. Do you make stuff up as you go along? It wasn’t a big movement. It started out small and grew into a bigger movement through the Byzantines and then through converting the Angles, Saxons, Franks, Norman’s etc. Christianity doesn’t need to be defined by how big it was at its inception. What importance or relevance does that have to the message of Jesus?

@@danpilgrim1785 OK, can you name me a book that has 20k+ manuscripts from that time? Let's look at Cesar. Oldest manuscripts are written by Cicero. The manuscripts are dated 400 years after Cesar's death. That Cesar we are talking about! The oldest manuscript of the Bible is the P52, 70 years after Jesus death. That's historical gold compared to any other work of that time. You can't deny that. I don't argue facts.

I wish I could but I sin too much. Me saying "Jesus is Lord" would be a terrible deception on my part because he isn't my lord all the time. Porn is my lord, alcohol is my lord, envy is my lord. I hate them but there is no point trying anymore. Very sad.

By leafing through the Bible I discovered that your Abraham had a very absurd way to swear. He asked his greatest servant to put his hand on his penis (penis & testicles) to swear. and the same thing happened between Israel and her son Joseph. - Genesis 24.2 / 3: "Abraham said to his servant, the oldest in his house, the steward of all his possessions: Put, please, your hand on my testicles (modestly translated by" under my thigh ") and I will make you swear by the Lord, the God of heaven and the God of earth, not to take a wife for my son from among the daughters of the Canaanites. " - Genesis 24: 9: "The servant put his hand on the testicles of Abraham his lord, and swore to him to observe these things. " Genesis 47:29: "When Israel approached the time of his death, he called his son Joseph, and said to him: If I have found favor in your eyes, put, I pray you, your hand under my thigh (understand" on my testicles ”, editor's note), and use kindness and loyalty towards me: don't bury me in Egypt! "!!! The more I read your bible and the exegesis of exegetes, it makes me want to die …… .. laugh. There are tons of stupidities there. To start with this: God punished the serpent who cunning Adam & Eve by walking only on his belly as well as his descendants. But how did he walk before the punishment: on his back, on his feet where he was flying…. !!!?

Christians have in their hands Bibles written according to the will, or the desire, or the understanding, or the taste or the credibility of copiers, translators ... And also there are several examples in the Old Testament ... In the Bible, the oldest manuscripts told us that God killed 50,070 people in one fell swoop for looking inside the ark of the covenant (a box) when the Philistines turned it over (1Samuel 6 : 19). The presence of such texts as well as many others is of great embarrassment to the editors of the Bible, they have come to interfere with what is supposed to be the Word of God. They treated the text of the Bible like any other book written by humans; they made additions to it when they saw fit and left out what they considered inappropriate. For example, 1 Samuel 6:19 says, “The Lord smote the people of Beth-she-shemesh, when they beheld the ark of the Lord; among the people he smote [fifty thousand] seventy men. " However, the English, French, German and Arabic translations have deliberated that such an act is unsuitable for the Merciful Lord; so they changed the text by reducing the number to only (seventy men). They believed that simply looking at ’the ark of the Lord was not a crime punishable by genocide. If today all the attention with which the Bible is surrounded, in terms of readers and printing media, has not prevented the text from being manipulated, what can be said of the situation in ancient times, when only the priests had the right of access to the Bible? But their assumptions are wrong. God does not beautify things. He cannot lie, (Titus 1: 2). These "students" of the Bible do not accept the original Hebrew which says "seventy men, fifty thousand men".

Whoever is reading this Jesus loves you. Whether you believe it or not he is the true living God. Go to him before he returns and before you die. He died for each and every one of you on the cross for everyone’s sins and was buried and rose from the dead 3 days later so we can have the free gift of salvation which is eternal life in Heaven. He is the only way to Heaven. We are saved by his grace through faith. Go to him he loves you and I love you🙏🏽❤️✝️ I don’t want you to die in your sins and perish in Hell.

Jesus validated many OT passages. He also claimed that Moses wrote about him which leads me to believe Jesus considered the Pentateuch to have been written by Moses.

And? That doesn’t demonstrate much. Of course the traditional authorship was held by people back then. But there’s this thing called scholarship. It’s not infallible, but it definitely shows enough to demonstrate one man alone was not behind all five of the books.

@@Moist._Robot The key is some writers said Jesus said. The truth is those authors could have been wrong, mistaken or taking too much license in their accounts.

I have a degree in Bible from an accredited university. I studied textural criticism. Most of it are theories, biases, and opinions. None of the supposed foundation documents have ever been found so their existence is questionable at best. Bottom line, it's all subjective belief. Which is why I clearly stated that it appears to me that Jesus accredited authorship of the Pentateuch to Moses. Since I've never had a face to face meeting with Jesus so I could ask him about this and a bunch of other stuff I admit to taking it on faith. However I also admit that I consider Jesus's references to the OT to be more validating than some guy's speculation on the authorship of OT books.

@@ManoverSuperman Moses is a personification of winter and the constellation Aquarius. His twin Aaron, is a personifcation of summer and the constellaton Leo. The Mo in Moses means WATER. His name can be written as Mises, Meses, and Muses. Take a look at the words Medad and Eldad, dad means lover, thus we have water lover and the southern constellation of Libra thru Pisces, this is the six nights/signs/months in Genesis one. El means RAM, Eldad means Ram Lover and the summer season which = the six day/signs/months in Genesis one. The six days is the summer season of six months and the signs Aries thru Virgo. Summer is always the preferred season of a full belly. Winter is always the troublemaker, it is the season of an empty belly.

I'm a follower of Christ and I really like what Frank does, but sometimes he's too simplistic for his own good. The reason some of us still have questions and doubts about the Bible is that while YES, Christ quoted from and taught the OT, but 1) We only have record of Jesus quoting a small fraction of scripture (often updating just a few lines from "you've heard it said"...to..."and I tell you..."), 2) Who is to say how much the OT (or the NT, for that matter) was edited AFTER Christ was in the flesh quoting said scripture (it could've been edited after the fact), 3) Aside from the Gospels in the NT, most of the rest of it were letters from a specific person to a specific individual or group of people yet we apply it to ALL of humanity in all timeframes, 4) We aren't even sure who the authors are of several books of the Bible, yet we are supposed to blindly believe it, 5) Christians get lost in literalism as the only way to comprehend Scripture because they believe for whatever reason that it's blasphemous to consider it in any other context (ie - taking everything literally instead of considering symbolism, metaphors, hyperbole, code, etc) and that is problematic/stifling, 6) People often worship the Bible itself as an idol making it equal to God (is God limited to what can be contained in a book...and who is to say that there are no more "worthy" entries into the Bible that came after the ones that were compiled in the Bible?), and 7) We are all taking it on faith that every single human-being involved in writing and editing the Bible were "in the Spirit" (we put a lot of trust into people we never met, many of whom are anonymous). I have a lot of faith, but God also gave me a brain that is capable of critical-thought. I love the Bible, but the thoughts I listed above are just some of the things I wrestle with. I am not afraid of that because all of humanity = Israel (since there is no Jew, nor Gentile anymore...we are all one), and Israel literally translates to he or she that "wrestles with God," if you've read Genesis and Hosea of the account of Jacob (who became Israel).

The quran writers were smart enough to explicity say the quran will be kept perfect. Of course a god would be able to do that, but since there probably is no god, and certainly not an abrahamitic one, these scriptures are just made up.

Frank is right. The Old testament having multiple contributing authors does not invalidate its truthfulness. The major concern would be if one or more nefarious authors intentionally edited the scriptures, especially the Septuagint, Dead Sea Scrolls, or the Masoretic Text in the case of the OT, but thankfully we have not yet found evidence for this

I think the best way to understand the inspiration of the Biblical text is not to see it as a one-time event. God originally inspired different prophets at different times to speak His Word. However it doesn't end there. He also inspired men to collect these words spoken through the prophets. These collected writings were sometimes edited to give coherence to the message of the prophets or to give new instructions to people in a different context and therefore you see many versions of the same story preserved in the Bible. Some of the scribes were wise men who reflected deeply into the prophetic message and gave inspired commentaries on them and they too became part of the Writings in the Biblical canon. Of course, the Christ Event was a decisive moment, in whom the hidden meaning of the whole of the Scriptures was revealed. Even today, when we read the Scriptures, God continues to in-spire these texts, so that we may be drawn into the life of Christ. The Church continues to authoritatively instruct her children in our own contemporary context through the inspired words of the Scriptures with the help of the Spirit given unto her. The Adam and Eve story show the fault of human nature to always turn to sin and each story in the bible basically replicates this turn of events from Moses, David, and Solomon. God chooses a people Abraham and the Hebrews and starts a covenant with them. This all leads to Jesus. The great men in the bible all failed. Only one man in the bible didn't fail. Which man was this? All the stories in the bible show a need for Jesus and this leads to his resurrection and the new covenant for all people on earth.

The textual validity of the Old Testament probably cannot be sufficiently proven academically to the skeptics. But as Dr. Turek says, if the guy who rose from the dead says he trusts it, then we don't really have a problem with it. We might not know how many people were involved in writing the Old Testament, but archeology has been digging stuff up that validates the accuracy of the historical events recorded within it, so I'd say the writers were at least not likely to be making stuff up.

I didn't really hear an answer, other than believing because Jesus did. I find this very troubling too: certainly a lot of. The history from 800BC onwards can be verified, but even the Exodus is now on shaky ground historically. How are we supposed to read the OT when some passages seem obviously divine and revolutionary, but some just seem factually wrong?

The OT even admits that others edited the scriptures. Joshua was commanded by Moses to add to the Law, and it was very likely him who wrote about Moses's death. During King Hezekiah's reign, there was a revival in Judah, and there are sections in the Old Testament where passages were added that contain his name even though the book is attributed to another author. Who's to say he didn't Commission a group to go through the scripture and update some of things, such as location names, like an editor would. Others who are believed to have done this are Jeremiah and Ezra. So. Yes, there have been editors of the Bible, and there are clues given to who they are and what they did.

But the issue really is (when the documentary hypothesis is strong) that the different editors had different, conflicting agendas that obviously aren't very truth oriented (by modern standards at least) and are adverse to preferred mainstream Orthodox interpretations. The case for biblical polytheism and human sacrifice to Yahweh being important examples. Yes, it's logically possible for 10 editors to all be 100% inspired by God into producing one final product. It is also painfully easy to make a case for human bias, retcons, and errancy when the sacred cow isn't being scrutinized. Because the normal evidence for these things is abundant.

The problem with trusting somebody who allegedly rose from the dead is that how are you going to prove he truly rose from the dead since the people who wrote about the alleged resurrection didn't necessarily witness anything themselves. So you're not trusting the word of the person who allegedly resurrected from the dead, you're trusting the word of the people who merely wrote about it.

It is the Spirit of Truth, that way whatever explanation of the Bible comes your way, your faith in the Lord Jesus Christ and His Word will be unwavering and rooted deeply, you cannot be moved. Otherwise it will be just knowledge based and any wind of knowledge that comes along will move you easily like chaff.

If you read the Bible you find that God has moved people to work for His glory like when the temple was being built people came together each bringing a skill set required. Prophets were given revelation by the Spirit of God in different timelines. And most of all Psalm 12:6 The words of the LORD are pure words: as silver tried in a furnace of earth, purified seven times.

Frankly if you read the Bible and have so much doubts, you haven’t really know Jesus. You cannot understand God by reading the Bible, let the Bible talk to you, have a relationship with Jesus.

Thomas (one of the disciples) had doubts, and he was even with Jesus in the flesh. It's quite ugly, judgmental, and dismissive to say that someone cannot know Jesus if they doubt some of what is in the Scripture. I've been a follower of Christ most of my life, and I have zero problem saying I have doubts and issues with some things in the Bible. I could give you a laundry list of problematic passages and issues with the Bible, even I still study and read it. Guess what? My faith is still intact. The good news is that I don't worship the Bible. It is a tool, a map, and a library. The Word of God is Jesus.

Some people read the Bible, some let the Bible read to them.

You claim that anyone who has ever had a doubt about the Bible (untold millions and millions of people throughout history, no doubt...believers and non-believers) cannot know Jesus. I legitimately call you out on it because that is an untrue and damaging statement, and you want to spotlight that me calling you judgmental is judgmental. I suppose it's a logical paradox...in order to call someone out when they're being judgmental, the other person becomes judgmental, as well. What you're focusing on is like when one is expressing intolerance, and when others call that person out on it, they say they're being intolerant of their intolerance. Well, for semantics sake, I'll say that the quote of me calling you out for being judgmental is more of me highlighting the fact that you are unaware of the damning weight of what you claim. If you still want to call me judgmental for calling you judgmental, then so be it, if that is all you can see.

@@HG-fs5fb there are exceptions, but generally, if you're from a place with a dominant religion, you're most likely that religion. Remember , not "automatically", but it's a pretty good chance that you are. That's what he means by cultural background. Like the Bahamas is a Christian dominant nation,although other people here have differing beliefs; however , if you gathered 100 people, it's a high chance the majority of them are Christian; ofcourse do to the rules of probability, none of them might, but we're talking about the "chance" of them being one being higher because the country is dominantly Christian

We have to remember the Bible is an Eastern book. Eastern people do not record events like Westerners. Mystery is seen as powerful in the EAST, yet frustrates the WEST. Melchizedek is a prime example. Westerners..will scratch their heads and ask, "Who was he? How did Abraham know he was holy? Who? What? Where? When? Why? How?" Yet...Eastern writers simply recorded that a priest names Melchizedek existed, offered sacrifices to God, and Abraham had meal with him. Melchizedek is mentioned by Paul, which agnostics believe were his writings, yet the mystery aspect of scripture makes agnostics doubt the validity of scriptures they have no problem believing! When studying scripture, you have to take into consideration of the people. I believe that the scripture is inspired by the Holy Spirit, but also you have to be able to see that human beings write different ways and styles. Matthew was a tax collector..so he is very detailed, which shows in is record of the gospel. Mark on the other hand was a Roman and just provides the GIST. Does it discredit the validity of their records because they are different? No. The gospels are still intact and valid!

The biggest omission is the removal and change of the Divine name of God, YHWH or Yahweh or in English the commonly used Jehovah, to the title LORD. Why omit the singular most important personal name of the Most High and replace it with a rather nondescript Title. Lord could apply to many different people in any number of stations. It made it easy to confuse the actual position in the hierarchy of heaven of our savior Jesus. Thus leading to the false doctrine that Jesus is in fact part of a triune godhead and as such a manifestation of the Almighty. Explain this...how can you keep a secret from yourself..." 36 But of that day and hour knoweth no man, no, not the angels of heaven, but my Father only." KJV By saying " my Father only" Jesus was stating the he didn't know either.

OLD testament wasn’t edited,if it was,Jesus could have let us know, God’s word will never be changed “The words of the Lord are pure words: as silver tried in a furnace of earth, purified seven times. Thou shalt keep them, O Lord, thou shalt preserve them from this generation for ever.” ‭‭(Psalms‬ ‭12:6-7‬) Jesus wrote the Old Testament through the spirit,it will never be changed.

Jesus constantly challenged OT laws, "you have heard it said....but I say...." And then he goes on to state the unchangeable nature of God's Law? This can only point to a corruption in the OT and that the higher law comes from elsewhere, as Paul states in Hebrews, God's new covenant is written into our minds and hearts, and as he also says, if we have love in us, everything we do flows from it and achieves the law.

Christ is the embodied Word of God, hence his son, the Bible is a collection of writings about the word of God, so first, trust in Christ. Then knock on the door. Pray for wisdom and guidance, as Christ said, it shall be given to us. God is no fool, why do you trust a book written by men to be above His own influence in your life in the form of the Holy Spirit? Take it as fundamental reading to understand the gist of our faith, but God is Known by communing with Him every day. You cannot possibly be convinced that you can live the adventure of life with God through reading a book alone? Our God lives and Christ is with us every second of our lives. Turn to Him first and repent, because you take to following the fallible and demonstrably corruptible works of men before following the understanding God has given you of His ways, which is simply, the following of Love, from which all else is achieved. 2 Corinthians I think, you know, the one about all being void if we don't have love first? Guess who is pure Love?

I believe that Jesus is my savior, and that he was sent from God, and only through him with his sacrifice in the cross we can be with our father. But I don't believe he is God himself. Will this prevent me from going to Heaven? Would this be really so important to God if I were wrong?

Actually it undermines sola scriptura and the belief that the Bible is the direct unmodified word of God. It also brings into question the accuracy of NT saying and happenings of Jesus, since if the OT is changeable, why would be think the NT was perfect? I still see the Bible as a good book but this issue will rub many chrtians the wrong way (protestants)

Isaiah 53 , fulfilled prophesies of Jesus Christ's birth, life, crucifixion, resurrection which ancient scrolls proof was written separately and long before the new testament but still rejected by many today, although some Jews today are now being born again and believe in Isaiah 53 . ( i use to be an atheist myself so i totally understand where you are coming from and why you are spiritually discerned and blinded for it is written: Corinthians 4:4 The god of this age ( satan) has blinded the minds of unbelievers so that they cannot see the light of the gospel of the glory of christ ,who is the image of God. ( I found out the hard way that God does exist, i lived a lifestyle of drink and drugs and ended up in a pit of depression and cried out to God in repentance for my sinful lifestyle and Jesus is true to his word, for all who call on the name of the Lord will be saved. No hard feelings God bless you and i will remember you in my prayers as i understand why you totally reject God, who knows for God says in the last days there will be great signs from heaven, maybe you will God willingly believe in God sometime in the future.

As humans we always says go with your feeling, most of the time our feeling is not what really matters. We feel we are in love but feelings alone is not love. We feel angry, doesn't mean we have fight physically. But whenever certain questions arise in my mind doubting God's existence, i always think about that feeling you get when you repeatedly engage in that immorality, that feeling of lost, empty, guilt etc. At this moment i go to that verse which Jesus said "Everyone who drinks of this water will thirst again; but whoever drinks of the water that I will give him shall never thirst; but the water that I will give him will become in him a well of water springing up to eternal life.” This verse clearly assure me that God's verse is true and God is true. Its like "I told you" moment for me.

the usual practice for ancient record keeping was the oral tradition. People were trained from youngsters to be able to memorize large quantities of information and reproduce it faithfully it wasn't until many years after Moses that actually things began to get written down and not likely by Moses but probably scribes. Perhaps at the exception of the ten commandment tablets themselves. we're so used to having actual written documents, that we think oral tradition is not reliable. That's just simply not true

@@Moist._Robot not a good comparison. Since guttenberg we've lost the skill and can scarecly imagine life without the printed word. Yet for most of humanity's existence, that was the only record keeping there was. Walton's Lost World of Scripture covers this really well. However turn it around for a moment. How can we trust the printed record we have now? Things that are printed can be just as inaccurate as things that I remembered. That's why you should never believe anything you read on the internet!

They were originally oral and later transcribed to parchment or palimpsets. I do encourage you to read Walton's book however. I'm no expert but he sure is and I learned a ton just by reading him far more than could be expanded here in this little chat.

Of course the OT was edited! It was edited from whatever writings the editor/s could use for the Jews to have knowledge of their history and of God. Two examples: Moses could not have written about his death someone must have edited that in later after his death. Abraham did not go as far as Dan because it was not called Dan at the time of Abraham. It was not called Dan until the tribe of Dan took the place and renamed it Dan centuries after Abraham. So someone must have edited, changed the name to Dan.

@@dudenotmad The word "holy" is derived from helios aka the sun. Ghost means the wind. Essentially the Holy Ghost is the warm spring winds. This is often symboled by a dove or hawk. The 2nd rider in the book of Revelation is the Latin Juno (Air), nothing happens without the movement of air. The first rider is Jupiter (Fire), the third rider is Neptune (Water), and the fourth rider is Vesta (Earth).

@@urasam2 a few things you may find interesting, I always recommend this book to people who want a different insight but check out the book Genetic Entropy. It'll give you a different perspective which I assume you're assuming is true (hence why everything else seems koooky). Also want to mention you can't trust yourself to interpret the world objectively if you don't believe we are created reliably by a conscious agent. If we are just accidents and a 'meat robot' as some say then you can't trust your own thoughts as those are just a bunch of atoms moving around in space with no agency. You can't trust the reliablity of anything you get. You can't even trust the thought that that is true or not (if that view was actually true). How could you reason like that.
