An aggressive atheist asks Frank if he would kill his family if God told him to, and then further questions Frank about killing the Canaanites. What would you do? And isn’t God barbaric for ordering these things in the Old Testament?

@MAROUAN AZIZ The difference between Islam and Christianity is that while in Islam the last messages of Muhammed were violence and jihad, we as Christians have a message of love and acceptance. It is though. God commanded such an act in the Bible so it only makes sense to hypothetically phrase it to see if you would do the same. If you're saying that it's more than yes or no then you are implying that it's impossible that you would disagree with God on the decision, which would contradict the idea of objective morality anyways
@RyanHarville
@RyanHarville 2 жыл бұрын
@@thakraken6995 It's not though. Technically speaking it could have been a 'yes or no', but the problem is if he said "no" then that means he wouldn't take God seriously. If he said "yes" technically this is correct if God commanded him, but as he said, Peter said "yes" and ended up denying Christ three times which makes both answers technically incorrect. He explains it fairly here.

@@RyanHarville so you're saying that God wanted a yes or no answer from Abraham about such an act but somehow it's still not a simple yes or no answer whether one would do what God says? It's interesting that the same Christians who suggest we should do what God says can't answer yes when hypothetically asked if they would do what God asks. People do not want to answer yes because they know what implications that would have on their morality. Even if God command someone to kill their own child hypothetically, why ought one do that?

I used to be an athiest, and like this boy here, I also was smug, and thought I knew it all. But the truth is I just had not thought it through hard or deep enough yet, nor did I have enough experiance to come to real conclusions. This kid is asking good questions, but he has already decided he does not like the answer before he hears the answer. He already has his mind made up, and though he pretends to be the more open minded, logical one, he is actually closed minded and arrogant. It took me almost 15 years of thought to come to the conclusion that God must exist, and that led me to where I am today. You can overcome arrogance, but it requires you to be humbled, and you must also admit that you, personally, are not the moral authority on anything. Once you accept that premise, then your entire mind opens up. I pray this kids questions lead him down a road where he can also see God, and maybe come to know Him.

In the case of Abraham, the boy was missing some information. Abraham had a promise from God that through Isaac Abraham would have a multitude of descendants. That couldn’t happen if Isaac was dead. Abraham told those that were with them to stay put while he and Isaac went up to the altar alone. He also told them that both of them would return. He believed God. That’s the point. Abraham knew that God would either provide a substitute sacrifice or raise Isaac from the dead….. and it was credited to him as righteousness.

I wanna ask Cody this: If you were the judge and you know your son would grow up to become a serial killer and rapist, how would you handle it? Would you kill him before he grows up? Then in other people's eyes you're just a murderer. Would you let him grow up and become a rapist serial killer? Then in other people's eyes that's injustice and you don't deserve to be judge. Even if you sentence your son to death after he commit all those crimes, there would still be people yelling "he didn't deserve death", and at the same time, there would be others yelling "he deserved way worse than a quick death". Or, would you bind him up in the basement and blindfold him, then feed him and keep him alive? Then where's his free will? If one of us were in charge, there would be no right answer. But thank God that he is the one in charge. No matter how much evil we bring into this world, in the end He will use it for good. This seems like such a simple question to me. Just as Frank said, there is no pleasing atheists. No matter what God does they will shake their fist at him, meanwhile at the same time stealing morals from him and claiming he doesn't even exist. I hope everything clicks in Cody's brain, would be nice if he could use his passion in a better way; the same way Paul did. It has been 2 years, anyone know how Cody's doing right now? Edit: I just had a thought, if you're an atheist, doesn't it mean that you believe everything is simply a physical phenomenon? In which case you can't say what Hitler did was wrong, because it was just neurons firing in his brain. You also can't claim murderers or rapists are evil. It would be the same as saying "earthquakes are evil". Consciousness is just an illusion right? We're just a domino without a conscious mind. Just as Frank said, you can't claim that there is evil or injustice in this world without acknowledging the existence of God. Also, I love these videos, they are amazing for training students in apologetics!

If Cody knew Torah, what we woefully mis- translate law, especially in the Hebrew. He'd understand as Holy Spirit would illuminate his understanding that G-d is Good always! And, as Father and Creator there are reasons to all that He does especially when we do not walk in His ways. Our choices are the results of whether we reap the blessings or the curse, life or death. (Deuteronomy 30: 19-20) When G-d removed the "ites" from the land it was because the cup of iniquity was full. Sin vomits its inhabitants out out the land. Similarly, as America will answer as the cup of iniquity (sin, idolatry) continues to defile this land Also, when He asked Avraham to slaughter Yitzhak, you'll notice Avraham's hand was stayed, and another sacrifice made. This is a prophetic picture of Almighty G-d offering up His own Son Yshua/Jesus as the only acceptable sacrifice for the sins of the world. 🙏🏼🩸 As it's the thief, hasatan, who comes to steal, kill and destroy. Would YOU kill your child given the same circumstances that you put forth ?
@kevinwang7894
@kevinwang7894 9 ай бұрын
@@rtaggs8178 That's not the point. The point is realizing that we as human beings aren't capable of making the best judgement. And since we can't even make the best judgment who or what gives us the right to judge God's decisions? Now, even if we assume that I have all the information I need to know for certain that my child needs to die, the right thing to do would be to kill him. But, just because I know what the right thing to do is doesn't mean I also have the strength to actually do it. We as Christians are constantly struggling with this exact thing till death; just as Paul wrote. We cannot predict the future, not even our own actions. Peter said that he was willing to die with Jesus on the cross, but Jesus and reality proved him wrong. Does that mean Peter was lying? No. His spirit simply could not overcome his fleshly instincts. He was willing until he was actually thrown into the situation. But by the end of Peter's life, he had enough faith in Jesus to be crucified upside down for Jesus' name's sake. The opposite might also be true. At this moment, I don't believe I'll ever have the courage to make the right but difficult choice if and when the time comes. But maybe by then God would've strengthened me enough for me to make the right choice. Am I willing to sacrifice myself for others? Yes. Do I actually believe that if I have to jump on a grenade to save others I would do so? No. But if I am actually faced with a similar situation, who knows what decision I would make. It is for this reason that actually asking these types of questions is pointless. The purpose isn't to get an answer but to realize that we don't know the answer; and nor do we know what the right answer would be. Say we kill a serial killer before he kills anyone else. But what if all of his victims would turn out to cause even more evil and suffering? Wouldn't it have been better to let the serial killer live and murder the ones even more evil than he himself? The point is to realize that we as human beings will never have _all_ the information necessary to make the best judgment. It is out of our control. Trying to control the uncontrollable is foolish. We can try to make the best choice we can based on the information we have. By no means am I saying that we can never make choices. But we do not have the right to criticize the all-knowing God's decisions. And to be honest, the same thing may apply to other humans as well. Someone might make a decision that seems evil to the rest of us, but if we have access to the information he has, we might end up making the same choice and realize that he was right. If another fellow imperfect human being may make a better choice than us, how much more so with the perfect God? Infinitely more so. We can't even criticize other humans without knowing the exact information they have access to at the time. What gives us the right to criticize God? Just because something doesn't make sense to us doesn't mean it actually doesn't make sense. Just because we can't find the answer to a question doesn't necessarily mean that there is no answer. We are not the center of the universe, and believing so is simply arrogance. We are not and do not get to set the standard.

@@darkeen42 Of course you can’t imagine, you like me and everyone else is infinitesimal when it comes to knowledge of God. Our capability to know God is very, very limited so we must rely on faith and trust in God. Those people who don’t have faith and trust in God think worshipping Him is foolishness. Notice I said people think give their opinions, but can never give irrefutable proof that there is no God or that He does magic. Man attributes things He doesn’t understand or comprehend to magic. God doesn’t do magic, God does CREATION. CREATION isn’t magic but to finite people such as you , me and everyone else because we can’t understand it we call it magic. I believe God/Jesus when He states to Martha in John 11:25-26, “ I am the resurrection and the LIFE. He who believes in Me, though he may die, he shall LIVE . And whoever LIVES and believes in Me shall never die. Do you believe this?” We won’t be judged by Jesus on head knowledge or logic but on how we answer that question.

Intellect is not the problem....in fact apologetics entire aim is to give an intellectually satisfying answer to the existence of God....to remove unreasoned doubt as a stumbling block and allow a person to genuinely seek for God; not the point at which we find Him, but at which we begin seeking, and perhaps it is to that you are referring. Faith comes from knowing, not knowing about God; which is about relationship not intellect. The thing is Bro I don't think Cody wants to believe at all in that would require some kind of relationship. My bet is he was raised in a home declaring Christianity but not living in relationship living rather in hypocrisy. I want to be clear we all fail, we all sin, parents as often as children, Christians as often as anyone else, but when we go to church on Sunday and pretend we are holy and our kids know the truth its poison. Cody asks perfectly reasonable questions that are very hard to answer. These are questions any believer needs to ask themselves. True, these aren't simple yes/no questions as Cody states, but he is right to ask them. He was perfectly respectful. If you're afraid to address or answer anything found in the book you claim to believe in, then you aren't actually a believer. It doesn't mean you have to have a great answer for everything you don't understand, but you certainly must account for the difficult questions.

The thing is, like most hypotheticals, the hypothetical in Cody’s question is utterly fruitless: it ultimately doesn’t matter what Turek thinks he’d do; it only matters what he would do. Those are two very different things. Nobody can know what they would do under a stressful situation like the one Abraham was put in until they experience it. So many presidents say they will do such and such a thing when they become president, and yet they only do a handful of those things when in office. Turek is only being honest when he says he doesn’t know what he would do. If he said he would do “x/y/z” then that would be ignorance of all the factors which could influence his decision in that moment. If he said, “I think I’d do x/y/z,” then that would mean nothing. It certainly wouldn’t prove his faith as faith is only proven in action. It’s like saying, “If I were in the NBA, I think I would win every game.” Yeah, sure…
@Striperbass2
@Striperbass2 Жыл бұрын
Agree...and I'll go further....Turek CAN NOT answer the question; if he say's "yes, I'd kill on god's command" then he's a terrorist, and would lose his stature. IF he say's "no", then he's not a believer. It's that simple, folks...either stand up for what you claim to believe and is the truth, or don't. "I don't know"...that answer tells me all I need.
@jedward5155
@jedward5155 Жыл бұрын
@@polaroidsky I think you're making the question more complicated than it is. It's not as simple as Cody is making it, but it's also not nearly that complex. Frank would do whatever God instructed him to do, including what Abraham did. Otherwise, he cannot possibly be a true believer in what he is saying about God. He doesn't want to say it, because it is terrible to imagine, and terrible to actually say.
@polaroidsky
@polaroidsky Жыл бұрын
@@jedward5155 Idk what to say, man. I disagree. First of all the question is loaded by using the term murder which isn’t an accurate description of what taking a life for God would be. When one human kills another human outside of the realm of their authority, that’s murder because the author of life did not grant them the right to do so, but when humans fight each other in war as a means to settle disputes and preserve peace that is not murder because God gave the authority to the government to do so. Same thing with killing in self defense: it is not murder because the govt which was appointed by God gave us the authority to do so. So when the highest authority with the greatest oversight commands one to kill their son, it isn’t murder because God, the ultimate authority above all authorities, has commanded it. The funny thing is that God never let Abraham go through with his sacrifice. Rather, he stopped him and said he would provide his own sacrifice. Who was that sacrifice? Jesus: his own son. So what Cody described wasn’t even something Abraham did. He was prepared to do it, but he never did. It was a test for Abraham and a prophecy for all mankind. In other words, it appears that not even God could say whether Abraham would be prepared to sacrifice his son until he was tested. How then can we expect Turek to conclude what he would do in such a circumstance? Finally, contrary to what you described, belief in God does not entail an assumption that you will always do good. If that we’re so, then why did Jesus die to atone for our sins? Was it not because we need forgiveness? And if we need forgiveness, don’t that imply that we are not perfect? And if we are not perfect, why would we have the audacity to say that we will always perfectly obey God’s will? We need forgiveness because we still cave to sin on occasion, and this is the beauty of the gospels: that while we are becoming more Christ-like through a joint effort between the Holy Spirit and our spirits, our saving belief in God is not determined by works, but through acknowledging that we need Christ in order to obtain forgiveness from God. We can still believe in this even when we fail to be obedient. In fact, our sin only highlights how much we need him. Cody’s asks the question like it’s a yes/no question, but given the loaded way he phrased it, and by using the incorrect terminology and misrepresenting what actually occurred in scripture, it would be foolish to attempt to answer it as it was presented, and so Turek attempted to correct his question such that he could answer it, but Cody (at least initially) objected with an utter frustration that wasn’t warranted given the weight of the question. Thankfully he was respectful at the end, but this initial frustration revealed that he didn’t care so much about understanding Turek’s thoughts on the matter, but rather that he wanted Turek to step in his snare so he could object with, “You see! Christians want to murder their families!” For the emotional appeal rather than to encourage productive dialogue that might bring some understanding.

I always enjoy and am blessed by listening to Dr. Frank Turek answer questions. When I heard Cody ask, 'Would you murder your wife if God told you to do so?' my mind jumped to Galatians 1:8-9 (ESV): 8 But even if we or an angel from heaven should preach to you a gospel contrary to the one we preached to you, let him be accursed. 9 As we have said before, so now I say again: If anyone is preaching to you a gospel contrary to the one you received, let him be accursed. One of the largest non-Christian religions, Islam, and one of the largest cults, Mormonism, began from supposed angelic revelations. Islam: According to Islamic tradition, the Prophet Muhammad received revelations from the archangel Gabriel over a period of approximately 23 years. These revelations were later compiled into the Qur'an, the holy book of Islam, which forms the foundation of Islamic teachings and law. Mormonism: Joseph Smith claimed that in 1823, an angel named Moroni appeared to him and revealed the existence of golden plates buried in a hill in New York. These plates, which Smith translated and published as the Book of Mormon, are considered scripture by members of the LDS Church. The Book of Mormon is one of the central texts of the LDS faith. This passage in Galatians emphasizes the importance of adhering to the true gospel and warns against accepting any other teachings, even if they come from "seemingly divine" sources. Scripture does not contradict itself. A so-called vision from God or an angel cannot contradict what we are instructed in the Bible. In addition to Galatians 1:8-9, several other scriptures support the position that a Christian should not follow an instruction to murder someone, even if it seems to come from an angel or a divine source. For example: Exodus 20:13 (ESV): "You shall not murder." This commandment explicitly forbids murder, establishing it as a fundamental principle of Christian ethics. There are many other examples in Matthew, Romans, and elsewhere, but the main point is that any so-called visitation from God or His angel representative cannot go against what God has already given us in Scripture. This is KEY in making life's decisions. Note: "Kill" is not to be confused with "murder." A great deal of confusion was caused by the King James Version stating in Exodus 20 that we should not "kill," leading many to believe that we cannot be called into military service or kill to defend our lives or those of our family against would-be murderers. Later translations rightly say we are not to "murder," which is a significant difference from the word "kill."

Frank Turek makes me enjoy apologetics all the more. I find presuppositional apologetics the most Biblical. When Frank challenges so-called atheists and agnostics to come up with a basis for any ethic or for reason, he is so effective. Often they will misunderstand Frank to be saying that they can't be moral or can't reason. But Frank is challenging them to provide a foundation for any moral or for reason if you are an atheist. You can't. They are working with borrowed Christian capital and then critiquing Christianity.

The basic foundation for morals is survival. In my opinion.

@@ts9332sure, but that’s pretty broad I would say. Because some people commit atrocities regardless if their survival is at stake or not. Which means there is evil that’s beyond nature, which means there is also good that is beyond natural instincts

@@davidhiramreyes6490 I've never been in that type of situation. Until someone finds themselves that hungry and that close to death that question can't be answered truthfully.

We know humanity existed before christianity or theocratic religion. You think nobody had any morals or ethics before then? Why does a mother seek to protect their children? Why would a father provide for the family?

Frank does not know anything more about his invisible friend than Muslims know about theirs..it is absurd to claim to know what their friends does..will do..cares about so forth intil it can be demonstrated to be real.there have been 7,000 plus gods that have been proposed by humans over time in hundreds of different languages and in hundreds of different countries.there is not and never has been the slightest evidence that any of them are real.until there is evidence we rational folk are entitled for dismiss all God claims and place them where they belong in libraries in the section marked Mythology.
