Let's face it, Psylocke is iconic (for lack of a better word) because the masses recognize her appearance and personality rather than her crazy and ridiculous biography. In my opinion, Psylocke is one of those characters that deserves a proper origin story; one that is compatible with her psyche and powers in more ways than one.

As I remember Psylocke and Betsy had a body swap sort of thing happen. I'm a bit fuzzy on the details. They revealed it in X-Men issues 20-22, I could be wrong. It was when Andy Kubert had taken over as the artist.
