After he's sent to an internment camp during WWII, Frank Emi forms a committee to resist the U.S. Army's decision to draft Japanese American men.
About Drunk History:
Based on the popular web series, Drunk History is the liquored-up narration of our nation's history. Host Derek Waters, along with an ever-changing cast of actors and comedians, travels across the country to present the rich tales that every city in this land has to offer. Booze helps bring out the truth. It's just that sometimes the truth is a little incoherent.

Tesseract 14 That's an interesting way of looking at it. There's something that makes me uneasy about a government that doesn't extend the same rights to you, treats you like a 2nd class citizen etc expecting you to lay down you life for those values. Anyway, I'm not a fan of any kind of draft so that's a big part of it for me.

There are a lot of dark moments in History that aren’t usually taught in schools. Not sure of the reasons, but I’ve got two explanations: 1. There’s only so much time in a semester so you can’t hit everything 2. No country wants to own up to the horrible shit they’ve done so the “history” taught is government propaganda to think there country is the greatest thing since sliced bread 3. Kid’s can’t handle tragedy well so let’s not teach it. That being said there are tons of books on history, so you can always learn on your own. Two suggestions: 1. Satan’s Circus, a book about the first cop to ever be given a death sentence 2. Killers of the Flower Moon; the Osage tribe where once the richest people in the world due to oil. They end up suffering a strange series of murder, triggering an FBI fascinating. The world has roughly 6000 years of documented human history, and half the fun of studying it is hunting for it on your own. Make sure you check the sources used by the authors; it can give you possible ideas for new things to read and let you know how reliable the authors info is (everyone is trying to sell you a narrative and historians are no exception).

most of the American's with Japanese heritage who did go into the military where sent to the 442nd Infantry regiment. This army unit at the end of the war was one of the most decorated units of the war. Many of them died to prove their loyalty to a country that had basically denied them their rights, and citizenship, and had placed their families in concentration camps. It took 43 years before the US government officially apologized for what it had done to it's citizens.

You'd never hear about this in an asian country because the simple story would be that the king/emperor doubted the loyalty of his subjects and imprisoned some as a test. His subjects of (insert clan, tribe, cast, nationality), proved themselves and thus passed the test. It all worked out. If no one volunteered to fight then society would judge them as having been disloyal after all.

American internment camps while horrible in that they remove american citizens constitutionally protected rights, were and are not the same as concentration camps. At no point was a government policy of extermination nor forced labor imposed. The US government self corrected and apologized in only 43 years. That says something about the American system, people and government vs many other nations that will never apologize or outright ban discussion of ACTUAL GENOCIDE, like Turkey when it comes to the Armenian genocide or what China is doing to its muslim population as well as dissidents.

The Japenese Internment camps will forevermore be an embarrassing part of U.S. history. Out of fear and suspicion people were forcefully pulled from their homes and placed in camps that were crappy and overcrowded. They could not leave and were basically treated like criminals with guards stationed to keep them from leaving and when it was all over and they could go home people lost their properties as the properties had been taken while they were gone.

We've done nothing wrong to them. If you go to prison, you get separated from your children whether you are a citizen or not. They are treated in a humane manner. We feed them three meals a day, all on the tax payer's dime, and all for the hard work of illegally entering our nation and breaking our laws. They could have very well stopped in Mexico for asylum. They would integrate even better there, but something tells me the relative lack of taxpayer funded rewards there is a driving factor of why they choose to brave thousands of miles to break in here.

My grandfather was in the navy during WW2, told me a Japanese man served with him. They weren’t close or anything but he told me that’s why he respects Japanese Americans because the one he met was willing to fight for the US against his homelands agression

And look up Randall Park, who had a master's degree in Asian American studies. That and the fact that Koreans were colonised by Japan and therefore considered Japanese during WW2 gives Park credentials to talk about this!
