I have seen SRV, Trower, Steve Morris, Eric Johnson, Yngvie Malmsteen, but to this very day, 10/21/20, Frank Marino was the best I have seen (overall). And so under rated. Sad

I was visiting Florida as a teenager and got invited to go to a Nazareth concert. I guess it's 1976..1977... Hollywood Sportatorium. This genius opened . Frank Marino is with limited company regarding skills on a guitar. Next day I found a small record shop in Hollywood as well. I asked the guy if he had Mahogany Rush ....he handed me the 1st live album. I pay him and he said thanks for buying my son's album. Serious. I told him I saw Frank for the 1st time the night before. He says to me ....he can't sing for shit , but he can play the guitar.

This appears to be the Mahagony Rush concert at Swing Auditorium in 1978, to which I was three feet away from Frank, against the stage watching drunk and stoned with my jaw on the floor. One of the best concerts I've ever seen and I've seem them all. When music was real.

Have always loved rock blues soul funk country....what ever from far back as I can remember . Im a black guy not supposed to be listening to "rock" music>>> LOL Around 79 he came to Lake Charles La and i'm sure I was the only black guy in there but he burned the place DOWN !!!!!!!!!! I guess this area is more country/western rock town but I thought it would be packed and it wasn't AT ALL But he put on one hellava show......Would love to see him again now !!!!!!

I’m a white male who grew up in the seventies in the DC MD VA AREA. normally wouldn’t mention race but it will make sense in a minute . Moved to Indy with job and was pretty bummed that I did but was reading the paper and saw Frank was playing a “free” show at the & second saloon. What. Pic me up. Anyway my wife and I did estate sales for extra income which brought us to downtown Indy to a house in the hood. The woman’s son was stopping by to see how things went. We talked a bit and I was surprised that this African American knew more about Frank than I think I did. Great conversation. We both loved the perfect side of the Whats Next album

Nobody in the rock/blues genres of the day could get close to this level of playing. It's a tragedy that Frank isn't rightfully placed in the top tier of player lists. His technical mastery, range of ideas, insane tone vocabulary and sheer musical soul and audacity are unmatched even to this day.

Man this dude was a beast! Had the biggest pedalboard known to man back then. And what's most amazing is that he got sounds out of that Gibson SG that I would've never imagined came from that guitar(with the help of all those effects of course. And that Vibriola System is one of the worst tremolo systems Gibson ever made, but somehow he figured out a way to keep the guitar in tune, even with bending the bar back and doing crazy divebombs with it! I must say I was floored when I saw him on Don Kirshner's Rock Concert about 40 years ago. It's great to know he's still kicking now!

I had the honour of meeting Frank a few times. The first time was when my band opened for him at a massive nightclub called called "Entex" (west of Toronto). This would have been about the mid/late 1980s. I would have been 24 or so - and he was my hero. I built up the nerve to say hello, and he spent the hour or so before the show telling stories and showing me riffs. Also, on the stage, he had a modified model train set - so the fucking pedals could follow him around instead of being stuck in a massive pile behind him. In spite of his reputation for being a quiet loner, the man was (Is? Of course he is still alive... shit...) outgoing and full of smiles and laughter. And when he took the stage, 3,000 people forgot how to breathe and blink for two hours. Its been close to thirty years since I have seen him, but he left an indelible impression on me.

He had an SG with strat pickups, with the bridge pickup orientated like Hendrix, with the slant towards the bass strings.

I'm sorry - he's not playing anything technically difficult. Just the usual clichés and pentatonic scales. Fast - yes but sounds the same over and over...

I think I saw the second show ever of Frank with this band in Repentigny Quebec. It was in a small highschool cafeteria in 1972.We were both 17 years old.The sg howled thru a main fender amp with two tube fender bandmasters in unisson to boost the e.q.he also had two cabinets with two 15 inchers in each and two cabinets with four 12inchers in each. When he hit a high note my throat tensed up and my ears were buzzed for two days loll They blew everybody away.He played so cosmic Hendrix that at the end of the show everybody came out with their jaws locked open wondering what musical time tunnel they just went into.He was second to none even at that age.

Saw Frank twice back on June 3rd 1979 back up Ted Nugent at the Boston Garden (must have been this tour), and also at the Channel club in Boston around the same Era.... my ears bled for a week after each show as i was only a few rows back at the Garden and up against the stage at the Channel..... It was worth every drop of blood that came from my ears! It was being in the presence of God! Frank Marino WAS rocknroll! That is how it should be done! I'm hoping for a miracle cure of his illness, as my buddies and I had tickets to see him again in September. REAL rocknroll will die the day Frank is gone!

A great live band, I can happily say I got to see these guys at least twice. Guitar player heaven! They may not have had a lot of their own good songs, but they rocked hard whatever song they did play. Frank was a shredder before people even knew what shredding was.

I saw Mahogany Rush back in 1979 open up for Ted Nugent, who at the time was my guitar idol. It was my first concert at 13 years old and I had never heard of Frank Marino before and I was completely blown away from his performance. I thought that Ted Nugent was great, being that I new all of his songs and the first time seeing a live performance, but the next morning I was completely obsessed on finding out everything I could about Frank and his band. That night I bought 2 of his albums. Tales of the unexpected and Mahogany Rush live. I still listen to him 42 years later and am still astounded by his playing. A true guitar legend.
