How hearty and sincere Zimmermann's playing sounds... His playing attitude makes me think of the great David Oistrakh. Without making any strange grimaces, exaggerate or unnecessary body movements while playing, no commercial flattering taste, his style is almost like the other violin maestros of old generation...

It was not just Joachim, it was Clara Schumann too, who was involved in this decision. Yes, today, we can't understand it any more, but those were different times. Don't forget that Schumann himself was unsure about some works like his 4th symphony. The reason they had however was (so I've read) that the third movement was a dance.

Yes. It was said Schumanns concert had no great ideas influenced by his neurotic disturbances, some others regarded it as not playable.

Surely Schumann intended the solo part to be heard clearly, in all its detail, as it is heard here. I have not been able to hear the detail so clearly in any other performance, and especially at the conclusion from 14.04 onwards. Zimmermann is a wonderful performer.

Yes I have and love hearing and watching her performance too, I have made it a delightful experience to listen to as many interpretations as possible from original by Kulenkaepf onwards. I love hear everyone’s as it seems to me, more than most concertos, to be more interesting from one to another. This performance is truly gorgeous. I must find Ana’s again.

It is only in the US. He is very famous in Europe..not underrated at all..

My best guess is that he didn't want his own concertos overshadowed by this one. Joachim could be petty. He feuded with Brahms simply because Brahms told Joachim that his wife was not cheating on him. Joachim divorced his wife anyway and gave Brahms the cold shoulder for a long time afterward. Joachim was quite wrong about this concerto. It is a masterpiece.

It's a bit sad that the orchestra is so much in the background and not as loud as it should - when the orchestra takes over the theme, it should be a bit more powerful and bombastic. The recording takes something away from the piece in my ears.
