So according to the lore shown in this video. In this timeline, Frank & Mac were both serving in the army (Presumably as part of yet another Get-Rich-Quick scheme by the gang) right as the outbreak occured, and he ended up shooting Sara and, presumably, killing Joel & Tommy when the ladder of whom showed up to save Joel (He might've shot Mac and killed him instead, given that we never see him again afterwards.) And then, 20 years later, he finds himself in the middle of The Fireflies situation after he finds Ellie and the others breaking into his apartment, thus getting dragged into this mission and taking the role of Joel as Ellie's protector during their trip and eventually surrogate father figure. Wow, the L O R E goes deep in this one and I'm sure all of these choices were intentional and not at all coincidences, bravo!
