In that regard, Shane had really amazing genetics in his explosive strength. Before I mentioned the 380kgx2 squat, but he also had a 36" vertical, which is nearly unheard of for a 150kg man. I think we can both agree that Rezazadeh is one of the best Olympic lifters of all time, but I simply think that Shane could have been up there with him had he started at an early enough age. If you want to disagree with me, that's fine, but look at the lifter and not his nationality for once.

Amazing to think they could easily throw more than the weight of 2 average fully grown men above their head in one go.

What were Shane's lifts in the deadlift, overhead press and front squat? Did he deadlift atleast 420 kg, overhead press 170 kg and front squat 320 kg? If not then you have no argument, sorry (these are the kind of lifts top weightlifters do routinely). Just because he is American doesn't mean he is the strongest. He was the strongest in smashing the weight into the platform after the lift though.

I have the ironmind video of this. I always wondered by Damyanov didn't take a third attempt snatch. this vidow shows he hurt his elbow. interesting.

"I never said that his being American made him strong--not even close." Sorry I mentioned that. But I have read many times from Americans that if only weightlifting featured the press Americans would do better, implying that Americans are stronger but somehow technically insufficient in weightlifting.

I know he had a good back squat, but back squat isn't everything. That is why I asked you about the other lifts that could matter for the weightlifter.

God, what a shame Shane was. In terms of raw power he was just as gifted as Rezazadeh, but his technique could just never catch up... didn't start young enough.

Americans WOULD do better than they do now if Olympic weightlifting were one of our main sports. Would we be the best in the world? Well, probably not, but we have quite a large pool of athletes to select from so I'm sure we would at least have a couple in the A class. In Olympic weightlifting, squat strength is the single best indication of talent. The clean, snatch, and even jerk are largely leg-based movements, so what you say about deadlift strength and OHP strength holds largely untrue.
