I have a feeling this was actually a recent analog horror attempt. Things like station sign-offs became really rare in the 80's and everything was 24/7 by the 90's. On top of this, local BBS/newsgroups were up and running for a while by then. Some of the rare pirate station uncidents (Max headroom incident) has recorded history in these newsgroups for example. There's no recorded history of the Lopez story though in what would of been a period of time that many people were awake and some of them had network access

There’s been a couple of updates to the Joanna Lopez case. - Another missing persons poster was aired on WMAQ for a missing girl named Tricia Kellett a few years prior, proving that Joanna is NOT a hoax or a one time thing. - A moderator in the subreddit dedicated to finding Joanna Lopez contacted a woman by the same name in Chicago. She confirmed that she ran away from home in the late 80s. No further contact has been achieved yet.

I think stark still images on TV accompanied by no music traumatize a lot of people cuz they just seem so serious and impersonal. When I was around 5, I watched a lot of PBS and Teletubbies was a popular show, and there was some live event called “Teletubby play day” that the network was hyping up for what seemed like weeks. One day they just broadcast a still graphic for a few seconds, with no music bed, and a deep male voice-over said “Teletubby Play Day has been cancelled” in a very firm tone. I didn’t expect to go to it and it was the fucking *Teletubbies*, but it was quite frightening the way they did it. I think it changed me.

I like lost media stories as much as the next guy but there’s bigger fish to fry. But if you must know, it was sometime between April 1998 and August 1999 based on when Teletubbies debuted stateside and when my family moved to a different city. We were in Regina, Canada which gets its PBS feed from Detroit Public Television. I don’t know if it was an event in the Detroit metro area or if was a touring show or what. “Teletubby Play Day” doesn’t even show up on a Google search.

The fact that Johanna Lopez’s name is literally a feminine form of ‘John’ and a very common Spanish surname makes me think that she isn’t real, and is simply an amalgamated placeholder for the missing persons system. 600,000 people go missing every year. 596,000 are located fairly quickly, most alive and well, some are found injured or dead. ONLY about 4,000 missing persons *remain* missing each year. And, yes, a missing persons' poster *can* and *does* appear on TV by accident all the time. The image and text looks like just like a placeholder graphic that was in use in the late 1980s when I worked at a local TV network. I wasn't in the Chicago area, but the image is *identical* the only difference is the phone number to call. It was replaced with a phone number of the police department in my area. The name on the image was also different. At the station I worked at the name used was "Joanna Dean." Joanna Dean was the house name used for unknown women, Jonathan Dean for unknown men. Jane and John Doe was reserved for news stories with unknown people found by police, so we couldn't use that name. I really think that someone at head end switched to the placeholder graphic accidentally and it wasn't caught through the whole night the first time. Someone did catch it the second time and pulled it after ten seconds.

I wonder if the Joanna Lopez title card that was broadcasted could be like an example graphic used for like training or testing purposes at the network. The two times it was broadcasted could have been some kind of mistake where they accidentally left the graphic on, that might explain why the second time it cut off abruptly, they realized they made the same mistake twice. This could explain why the graphic is missing so much info, and why Joanna Lopez is a name that doesn't match up with anyone, whoever made the dummy graphic just made the name up on the spot.

That's what I was thinking. Like this was something for new writers at the station to come up with a description for a missing person that doesn't exist. But at the same time, I saw a comment on the Fuzzy Memories upload of that slide that said that this happened multiple times across this time span (not just in '89 and '91). The crazier part about that comment was that they sometimes showed a different person and a tone would play over it (like how the color bar system worked). Nothing about this mystery makes any sense. Until there is more footage of these WMAQ sign-off enigmas, or if someone that worked there during that time frame comes out and explains everything, then we're nowhere closer to the end of the mystery than we were at the beginning...

Looking at the next time "Joanna" appeared again she seems to be wearing some big sunglasses on her eyes even if you have a photo editing tool that can lighten or sharpen up the image. Very odd choice whoever got the image up would just have an image showing her eyes and facial features, but all obscured and hard to tell with the sunglasses on her eyes and the low-quality image. Ngl I would be unsettled if an image like that appeared late at night staring and staying like that till the news came back on in the morning. Thank goodness we have at least late-night programming, early morning news, and reruns of shows and news from earlier in the day.

He def had pull to have someone wind up in the bottom of a lake with cement shoes If I messed with Frank Sinatra, you know I’d be looking over my shoulder for the rest of my life That or the dude maybe was just grateful to have his son back and all and didn’t want to focus on revenge Idk

Back in the 80s and 90s, it was pretty common for shows to randomly have the bar graph or cut off when a program ended or random stuff show up. I remember staying up as a kid and would randomly see people selling products and it just cuts off to the bar graph and noise before going black. I assume that Lopez was a missing person and someone or someone at the station knew she was missing and wanted to help out but resources/money/etc. ran out since a lot of missing people families don't have a lot of resources/etc.

The Joanna Lopez thing reminds me of a guy I knew when I was working at a bank. He would come in once a month or so to do his banking and get a few copies of a beaten up DIY missing person poster. This thing was a copy of a copy of a copy and the photo on it was impossible to decipher, with the name and phone number not much better. I guess he’d been doing it for years and I think he said at one point that the police didn’t consider the guy missing anymore (something like they’d gotten in contact with him and he didn’t want to be found, maybe?); it was all just really sad. It kind of makes me wonder if Joanna could have been something a little similar, like maybe she wasn’t officially considered missing but one person was still trying to find her, and only had the one photo to go on? Definitely doesn’t explain the timing of the broadcasts though.

I remember when those colored bars used to be on the TV overnight. That's a pretty early memory for me but that would have been the late 80s or early 90s. Just one of those weird, fuzzy, super-early memories. That sort of memory is really weird. When did they start just showing stuff all night? Because it seems like when they did start having programming all night, it was just infomercials until like 5 or 6 AM. Which reminds me - that might be why I would see the bars - trying to wake up super early to watch Bozo or something when I was probably 3-5ish.
@Solinaru
@Solinaru 2 жыл бұрын
Yeah, this is where I keep having hangups on the first story. Around the states, some TV stations would have sign-offs still in the 80's but many of them already transitioned to a automated system to keep their station running 24/7. For example, Fox5 in NY would show their 10pm news @ 2am as a rerun as they were one of the few channels that didn't have late-night comedians like David Letterman or Johnny Carson. Channel 11 (pre-Warner buyout in the mid '90s) would play movies after 11pm and then infomercials. If you were a TV station and a large city like Chicago, you would most likely have something to play after hours since there's still a very sizable audience for advertisement. You wouldn't have any of the best shows on, but you would have some shows that would only show up after 11:00 p.m. or so as they wouldn't have the same commercial appeal at any other time. To have what would be a mainstream station sign off to black or nothingness at this point would have lost the station money and would have actually showed up in the news the next day as a station malfunction.

One other possibility on the Joanna Lopez case: It may have been someone doing research for a grad degree in some area of criminology (Psychology, Statistics, Social Work, etc). At that time, research was definitely happening on forensic drawings with exaggerated features to get more leads. (IOW--Remember those unrealistic, kinda creepy drawings where the teeth or chin or whatever would be way out of proportion? There was "research evidence" claiming that those kinds of images got more attention and were better at jogging people's memories than more realistic sketches.) Maybe a similar project was being done with forensic photos? NEVER, EVER, underestimate the goofy weirdness of a grad student in need of data and/or a thesis topic. Someone may have been working part time or interning at the office attached to that phone number while also finishing a degree.

As callous as it might sound, this Joanna Lopez case kind of sounds like testing protocol; I was a CompSci major when I first started University, whenever we were testing a program we'd written ourselves or an OS we were unfamiliar with, to get familiar with it we'd ask the program to do one thing: Write the phrase "Hello World!" in white text on a black background. When running system checks, radio stations do this as well. They'll play high pitched, eerie sounds in order to recalibrate their system before the next broadcast day. Something about them using such an overexposed image, leaving no information, it sounds like a test; I don't know if Joanna Lopez was a joke inside the office or with the broadcast engineers, but that's what it feels like, especially using it multiple times and leaving it on for hours on end. The overexposure makes sense too, likely, the photo is a collage of different features cut out from magazines and yearbooks just so they could have a photo to use for their test graphic and in order to make it not look fake, expose the crap out of it.

I'm sticking with the theory that Joanna Lopez was a test slide that was left on all night by accident. That would explain why there's so little information about her. The person in the photo probably isn't even named "Joanna Lopez." I feel this would also explain why the second occurrence was replaced with SMPTE bars, perhaps someone at the station caught the error and pulled it off the air. Just a theory though, it's still an unnerving photo to be staring you down at 3am.

for some reason, im... really not satisfied with the arg/mistake/troll angle of the Joanna Lopez case. Occams razor and all, but theres just. something off about it. 1) if it was to scare people staying up late, why did it only happen twice? years apart? also why was one all night and the other 2 seconds 2) from the evidence gathered and what i understand, the joanna lopez case or even anything else to do with the broadcast have never been followed up on, killing any idea for arg. it was on at the end of broadcast on a local chicago tv station, i dont think thats an ideal place or time to play games with people. 2) ive seen someone say it could have been a mistake or some kinda testing card accidentally turned on. okay, so: why would they use a missing persons poster? why have the number to the chicago police youth division? usually these things have some sort of text or announcement that it was a mistake or a test. none of that happened. theres something off about the photo apart from the obvious. something tells me the answer lies in the origin of the photo.

I have a similar theory about getting answers from the photo. My theory is that if someone who knew Joanna personally has a copy of that photo and decides to share it, their copy would most likely be higher quality and we can finally do more research to try to find out what happened to her.

@@meuliaisacoolgirl it would be easiest for a person working at the station to pull it off, but it could be done remotely by anyone with broadcasting equipment by setting the signal they are broadcasting to be the range that that tv station uses. Its illegal, but TV signal highjacking was much more common before satellite tv became common, and possibly even more so before they started cracking down on it after the max headroom incident(which also occurred in Chicago!). The fact that it supposedly stayed onscreen for and this is the first I've heard of it is almost suspicious, but it's very possible that noone reported it bc 1. it only interrupts the sign off which many folks may have turned off anyway and 2.it looked like a legitimate emergency alert for a missing person to those who saw it at the time

What's truly frustrating about cases like Joanna Lopez, the Max Headroom incident, the Most Mysterious Song on the Internet, etc. is that you'd assume they would be somewhat easily solvable. People tend to leave a life-long paper trail and there are records for everything, and surely stuff like the Max Headroom mess would be traceable. Even the most obscure stuff leaves records. - They easily solved other signal-hacking incidents, like the "Capt. Midnight" cable guy who was angry with HBO. If cops could find him, then "Max Headroom" would have been easy... but the latter is a mystery to this day! If Joanna was a joke or a placeholder thing, someone at the station would've said something. If Joanna was a hacking incident, then they should've traced it. If she's a real missing person, there should be records or family... but there isn't. - All these John / Jane Doe cases where they reconstruct the deceased then broadcast it in the media... yet not one family member, friend or acquaintance shows up. I just don't get it! Someone must know something or knows these people, yet they say nothing. - Surely somebody knows SOMETHING... and yet... there is nothing!

Often they use the actual photo of the deceased person and use image editing to add open eyes. It's unsettling but probably the most accurate way to show what a person may have looked like in life. I have spent hours on the Doe network but it still disturbs me.

imagine you're a little kid, you snuck out of your room to watch tv when you weren't supposed too, then while you're watching a glitch happens and a picture of a missing person pops up. you feel a little spooked but decide to just wait a few seconds for the image to disappear and go back to the show you were watching, but it doesn't go back. you wait for hours and the image still sits on your screen, staring into you, you feel guilt wash over you, its almost as if its a warning. you knew it was wrong to get up in the middle of the night, but you wanted to watch the shows that stayed on late, but instead you were met with the sight of another person who hadn't quite thought things threw.
