Last week, after a lacklushter performance, it was announced Frank Ocean would be dropping out of weekend 2 of Coachella. his set at the first weekend was his first live performance in 7 years. Several festivalgoers were upset with Frank's performance, and were let down by several of the last minute changes. The ice rink was nixed at the last moment, and Frank performed reworks of songs like White Ferrari , Self Control, and other songs from Blond and Channel Orange. Despite some fans being upset, artists like Benny Blanco and Justin Bieber stepped in to defend Frank. This performance opens an interesting question about how fans can hold artists accountable for their performances, and to what degree they should communicate being dissatisfied.

I reallyyyyy hate that supposedly the entire ice rink had to be melted and that the skaters didn't get to perform. As a creative, it sucks to spend so much time on something that doesn't get to see the light of day and regardless of them getting paid, they missed a huge opportunity that could've opened so many doors for them. Ikr? I read an asinine excuse to this that "they shouldn't complain cause at least they got free tickets to a festival" and I wanted to scream cause it's such an uninformed take! Do people really think production gets to hang out while you're not working? You don't get tickets, you get passes to your backstage area, not the whole festival: you're the help and are treated as the help. If for whatever reason you're not gonna participate, you're immediately sent home; if you wanna stick around and you have to buy a ticket just like everybody else! He booked this performance in October 2020, two months after his brother’s accident. He had nearly three years to decide if he couldn’t do it anymore and he decided at the last minute to scrap all the things he originally planned for his show. Screwing the ice dancers and crew members over who put in all that hard work. And screwing the fans over with his rushed, disjointed and phoned in show at Coachella. Some people liked it, while lots of people hated it. It clearly showed he just didn’t care about the fans at all.

It’s been interesting to watch reactions to different artists. In the past artists like Erykah Badu or Lauryn Hill have had stains on their reputations for showing up late or “diva” behavior. I’ve seen both at festivals in the past, both were late for their sets but put on an incredible live performance so it felt worth the wait. Meanwhile artists like Lil Uzi or Lil Wayne are also notorious for no showing or cancelling last minute, but that’s not the thing people bring up first about them like the female artists mentioned. Recently have seen on tiktok a show by Sabrina Carpenter being cancelled last minute for a bomb threat and she received so much backlash for something completely out of her control. Whereas on the flip side a recent show from Morgan Wallen was cancelled last minute due to him allegedly being too drunk to preform, but his fan base still loves him. The point brought up in the video is exactly it, you can still have love and respect for the artist while also acknowledging that a performance was disappointing. I’m seeing so many people express online that they were disappointed with this experience and immediately being attacked saying they’re heartless or not real fans. And the reactions saying the situation is funny because Frank scammed the influencers and nepo babies, as if the majority of the people at the festival aren’t normal people who most likely saved up a long time to be able to attend the event.

Have a charitable take, & you’re a delulu Frank stan, have a critical take, & you’re a hater. I’m tired of the binaries. 🙄 Fan entitlement is bad, but were fans entitled to expect a quality full set and polished production from the closing headliner of Coachella? With those ticket prices?! The ankle excuse? Lol Bye. Especially when we’ve seen artists be injured, ill etc and still sat in a chair and delivered great performances. His voice wasnt damaged and he was dancing around on stage with fractures? Just sit on a sofa with a cup of tea and sing 🎤 And yes, fan entitlement is bad, but artist entitlement is bad too. Artists aren’t entitled to fans time, money or support. I watched one video of somebody who says they’re done attending festival bc of artists turning up hours late, leaving early bc of curfew, rappers barely doing 20% of the lyrics live so it’s basically a listening party, and an overall lack of care about the art of performing itself. Artists should respect fans time and money. The respect should be mutual.

One thing I never understood is, if your whole reason for performing is to honour your deceased brother's memory like Frank said, why give such a lacklustre performance? I'd want a performance honouring a dead family member to be the best one I could give.

After all those insanely amazing performances I would’ve been so mad had he gotten on stage and did what he did week 1. It’s so sad that his fans cut him SOOOO much slack. Yes he’s been through things, but who hasn’t? We all still get up every day and do our jobs. If he knew he wasn’t gonna care for the performance or even perform he should’ve dropped to begin with. This is the first time he’s performed in years. Clearly large music festivals are not his bag. I think if he’s serious about performing, his team especially, needs to stop these grand festival debuts. At least until he’s proven he can handle it. Get him in more intimate spaces first, especially if he’s not performed in a while, and let him figure out what his lane is in terms of live performing. His music vibe is very melodic, cool, and intimate. He doesn’t have to be a The Weeknd or Harry Styles level performer, in fact, I think most of his fans prefer that he’s not. I say this because I too think that bs ice skating rink idea sounded dumb as hell. Fans just wanna hear Frank sing, we don’t need the theatrics. So I think this is a great, humbling lesson for him and his team. I hope they figure out what’s the best move going forward. He’s still a great artist and this shouldn’t be the end of his career.

The mental health excuse is a lie. If he is really suffering then he should have cancelled initially yrs ago instead of wasting everyone’s time and money. The fans, crew, event organizers all suffered so he can make a quick 7 million dollars and not even really perform. That was wack and disrespectful what he did to his fans who waited all day in the scorching desert sun till late into the night and to everyone including the stage and production crew who bust their asses off setting up the show. His behavior is insufferable, gross, and truly intolerable. That’s bs and he needs to be held accountable and called out for his constant unprofessional, unreliable behavior for the past 10 yrs. It’s a pattern of repeated flakey behavior, that’s the only thing you can count on is him falling apart and bailing out on fans and event organizers. You can only rely on him to be a flake and cancel or never show up and make you waste your time bc he doesn’t even give his fans the respect of an announcement that’s he can’t be there like he’s so often done in the past. He screws everyone over and he’s been doing it for 10 yrs! He only cares to secure the check and gives very little of a performance and that’s if he even shows up! This constant bailing on commitments and torrid of excuses and the justifying of his actions needs to stop; it’s unhealthy to enable a narcissist. Every person on this planet has gone through shit and still gotta wake up and fulfill their commitments whether as parents or for their work, we don’t get the privilege to just check out and claim mental health reasons every time we are forced to do something we don’t want to do. We would be fired from our professions, our career would be tainted and stalled, and we would lose out on any future jobs bc of our flakey and unreliable reputation if we were all like Frank Ocean and did exactly what he did for 10 years. He’s an adult, he needs to honor and fulfill his commitments and not drop out and cancel every single time. There are consequences and he needs to finally face them and accept his faults and the direct part he played in these bad performances and no shows and repeated cancellations. Stop babying him and cradling him. It’s making him worse. He needs to be held accountable and responsible for his actions. Can’t believe he’s gotten away w this bs for 10 yrs. Immature unprofessional ungrateful undeserving diva entitled attitude. He should quit performing until he got his act together. Get therapy till then stay off the stage. Maybe just quit music and give up the fame and notoriety all together and focus and work on your mental health

I feel like Frank Ocean has a narcissistic view of capitalism (similar to Lauryn Hill). It sucks that music is commodified, especially to the extent that it is at present-day Coachella. But the two artists never seemed to consider that their art WASN'T just them--it was their backup singers, the people that recorded drums for them in the studio...their fans, too. They preach anti-commercialism, yet they seem to think they are the only loser. When the system pisses them off, they only save themselves. (which is a privilege by the way - they have enough money to live, which gives them free time to think, yet they spend that time ranting about themselves as the embodiment of their art. it goes on and on). Frank needs to realize that just because his art is exploited by the industry doesn't mean he is the only one being eaten away. In reality, "Frank Ocean's art" is made up of hundreds of working people. They didn't deserve this. He turned into the same monster he said he was fighting. That is what saddens me.

1. in the first place he wasn’t even obligated to go. i understand that he wanted to do it for his brother (rest in peace), but it’s not like he’s forcing him. if you’re going to go to coachella, you HAVE to put on a show. 2. i feel like the broken ankle thing was just a excuse j not to get sued by coachella. reminds me of when selena gomez’s PR made the statement that she had a panic attack at the amas as an excuse when actually she was just faded 💀 3. in all honestly, frank is wasted potential. he’s hot and he has the vocals and the songwriting skills to make wonderful songs. he wants to play the game yet doesn’t want to follow its rules. sometimes you need to go out and try things to figure out what you truly want to. there’s nothing such as a “introverted artist” because that literally doesn’t exist in the music industry. you need to be public and you knew what you were getting yourself into. as harsh as it sounds it’s true 🤷🏽‍♀️ artists like the weeknd, ariana g, ldr and tyler the creator go on live streams and answer questions, engage with their fans etc., while frank is just nonchalant. it’s annoying atp. he can keep the album. idk what’s stopping him to retire. label issues ? 🤷‍♀️ TL;DR/ not readin allat: frank ocean is in his flop era go girl give us nothing !!

I remember that too, lol! I think in this case tho the damage to Frank Ocean's career can't really be attributed to this one performance, the reaction was a result of almost a decade of lackluster or cancelled shows, no new music, and the hawking of overpriced, low quality merch that rarely reaches its destination. The way he's handled the criticism (which has honestly been very well-balanced respectful) for this has also been terrible. I don't think it'll be ruined, but it's definitely entering its flop era. Re: Ashlee Simpson, it didn't help that she tried to blame her band for playing the wrong track *on that same show*, then was forced to backtrack and say she had a health issue. I recently rewatched what was supposed to be her redemption performance at the Orange Bowl's halftime show, and it was rough (it's on here, beware nuclear levels of cringe). And I lived in the city I didn’t even have to travel out of town or fly in anything like others did but it’s just like the years I spent begging god to let me see these artists and experience their music live it’s like it actually does hurt a little for that to be taken away when it’s literally your favorite artist and they don’t have a good reason it’s just like they genuinely do not care. People have tattoos from these artists, they get married to their music it’s a big deal to some people. Should it be a lesson in idol worship? Maybe, but why is it our idols who coincidentally and happily take our money that feel the need to teach us those lessons it gives snakey. Frank talked about losing his brother, I feel very heavily. I also saw a story of a girl who’s sister was franks biggest fan and also died and she sacrificed literally everything to see frank in her sisters honor so…again sympathy for everyone experiencing loss but she didn’t get paid $4 million to go and frank did. it feels like we’re willing to die for artists who genuinely couldn’t care if we dropped from heat stroke waiting for them to not show up. Sorry for the rant lmfao.

Wait $4million?? Is that a fact? That’s even more shameful. I’m just reading all this commentary and I totally agree with everyone. Artists forget why they are there in the first place, if you’re checked out then drop the mic and retire.

I removed his music from my Apple Music account. I spent almost 3k to travel from the Midwest for him to pull this shit. I would of never gone to Coachella had he not been there

i can see all sides but it just sucks for the fans and skaters that had money and hard work involved. if it's a mental health thing, which i understand (i myself had to cancel my wedding over mental health) it's not really an overnight thing. if you have any doubt you're not gonna be able to go through with something, just don't, and make a backup plan. or at least address the issue head-on so people understand better, not make excuses after the fact. it just all looks pretty selfish and careless to me which is sad considering what a great artist he is.

If he really had a injury I don’t understand why they wouldn’t have told the crowd so they could at least understand what was going on. I didn’t even think about the possibility of that just being an excuse but it kind of makes sense

I was there. And while waiting in line for a shower, the girl in front of me flew all the way from Florida with her bf and rented a car just to go see him… just for him to cancel last min. This is no okay

This reminds me of when Adele canceled her Vegas shows short notice and sooooo many people were so upset for a variety of reasons, both reasonable and unreasonable in my opinion. I appreciate you for sharing both sides of the issue! ❤ another amazing professional video, thank you!

I guess all the comparisons to Kanye are becoming true... and not because of the supposed 'lyrical and musical genius' label. Apparently being a genius comes with shenanigans, diva attitude, selfishness and unprofessionalism 'all in the name of the art'.

Goodmorning: Frank should've never even performed at all. Frank was injured, why on 🌎 did he perform...?? When artist do this they might get injured more. Personally, everytime I hear a artist is injured but still performs I'm like "they deserve that." But I don't really know if he was injured or not. I don't believe this will end his career. Frank should of came up with a better thing to say, that'll ppl would actually believe. If I'm injured as a artist, I'm just gonna say " Nope I'm not performing I'm hurt, money is less important than my health" Not decided to perform is the best option. I know they want the money but health is wayyyy important than your performance. It totally sucks that alot of artists do the exact same thing, just for the money..!!

He never took me as the kinda artist who cares about Coachella and festivals like that, he’s a more intimate performer I guess . I’m surprised he was even booked for Coachella tbh because he only comes out of hibernation like once every spring

I was at weekend 1 and got to see his set, it definitely felt disjointed and you could feel his discomfort on stage. However, I still had an amazing time. DJ Crystal Mess killed it and I love that he gave her that incredible platform. I’d say my highlight was Godspeed though. His emotions were palpable on stage, and you truly felt the air shift when he sang. I was weeping lol.
