Remixing is an integral technique in music. It got its start in Jamaica in the late 60s and early 70s, and these techniques were soon brought to the United States, where they became prominent in the disco, and house scenes. Disco and house were popular club genres, and house especially became popular in Europe as well. Remixing was also an important part of hiphop. DJ Kool Herc, the inventor of hip hop used turntables to create merrygoround mixes that are still played and created by other artists today. Hip Hop artists such as Diddy, Biggie Smalls, and the rest of Bad Boy Entertainment made a name for themselves remixing artists' songs, and featuring on them in the 90s. Some of these artists include Mariah Carey, Mary J. Blige, and even Destiny's Child. In the 2000s, remixing was still as popular, with rappers like Lil Wayne and Ja Rule jumping on several remixes. His remixes with J Lo, I'm Real and I'm Real and Ain't It Funny inspired a change in how the Billboard Charts count streaming, even to this day. Personally, I think you can see the effect of this rule change in some of the recent remixes made by artists including Ice Spice, Beyonce, Ariana Grande, Doja Cat, and Nicki Minaj. But in the hyperpop and electropop spaces, a lot of exciting projects are being made, a great example being Lady Gaga's Dawn of Chromatica. Popular hyperpop artists including A.G. Cook, Pablo Vittar, Charli XCX, Shygirl, and Rina Sawayama, Mura Masa, and Dorian Electra.

Remixes now are just features lmao. No new arrangements and productions, just a new artist and them giving us new lyrics. There are a couple in today’s climate that has done remixing correctly (savage remix with Meg and Beyoncé)

in my opinion, there are 3 things needed for a featured artist remix 1. the featured artist should be all over the song, not just a verse 2. the original artist should change up their part 3 the artists need chemistry together and transitions should be smooth

Beyoncé is one of the more recent artists who understands the assignment when it comes to Remixes. Her Savage Remix with Megan was great. She didn’t just add a verse, she added a new intro, background vocals throughout. As well as the Cuff It and Break My Soul Remix! (yes I’m aware she started in the 90s, but by recent I mean putting out new content that is pretty popular)

I am going to go back quite a few years with Beyonce - the Freemasons remixes of Deja Vu, Beautiful Liar, Ring the Alarm and Green Light - are incredible dance mixes. They turn those tunes into something totally different, almost unrecognisable from the original tracks. They were UK mixers (and friends of mine) never sure if those remixes made it out of the queer clubs!

I also feel that the reason why remixes are lacking too, is because they're not for the purposing of giving the song a new life or changing the take, but rather just helping it go/ keep it at #1, (Taylor released multiple remixes the same week that rich flex came out which would've gone no. 1 if it wasn't for the streaming boost)

That’s what this Taylor Swift Ice Spice remix was to me. Taylor is obviously huge, but I think she wanted to some cook points from outside of her typical demographic. As a 90’s child, I will always think a remix is a new take on the original song, not just an extra verse from someone else. I think that’s why I absolutely love the Club Future Nostalgia album. I don’t even like house or dance music like that but I love the new take on all the already great songs. My favorite remix is actually from Club Future Nostalgia: the Physical remix featuring Gwen Stefani. It’s chill but you can still do a little bop to it.

That’s what I’m saying if you’re going to remix the song give us something new! Or else it’s a re-release with a feature imo. JDs remixes are too too good. One thing I don't hear most people talk about is the other side of the coin- redux. When the artist goes back with new music knowledge and goes back over it, mixing it smoother, or more towards the original idea but keeping it true to original release.

Yes, I think Kanye may have popularized this with changing the production on TLOP and Donda when he felt like it. My dad and I were just talking about this. It’s kind of annoying if you liked the “original” version, but you’re forced to listen to it(new) on streaming. The only people who can enjoy the original are people with purchased the physical or downloaded copy. Other artists have also gone in to change or censor lyrics deemed offensive. Which technically happened pre-streaming, the song was just re-recorded.

@Ziko577
@Ziko577 Жыл бұрын
@@MONET8iAM Radio edited versions were often the censored versions of songs with the offending lyrics muted or my favorite thing they used to do when I was growing up was use goofy sound effects so the advertisers then won't get upset when someone used foul language, incriminates themselves, and/or even glorifies violence, drug use, etc. What always annoyed me back then was the fact that the uncensored versions were sold on albums alongside the edited versions. That's not to say it doesn't still happen on the radio today as it's still a thing. Streaming doesn't seem to have these barriers at all really as I have people I know use apps like my brother and they curse up a storm and sexual language is used on the regular. One thing I hate about streaming is that many artists don't have all of their catalog available due to these greedy labels holding it hostage so you only get a small portion of songs instead of all of them.

I definitely prefer remixes that are reimaginings of the original, but I think a good way to prevent a lot of the criticisms of how simple remixes have become these days would be to reintroduce alternative terms to describe the track. Like the Die For You "remix", I feel like it could've been marketed as the "Duet Version" or something similar. And labelling the Boy's A Liar remix "part 2" is a more vague label that fits PinkPantheress' brand. There's a LOT of more specific words under the remixing umbrella, and in track titling in general, that more people should be aware of. Have you heard Sophie's remix album? I feel like a lot of fans overlook it but it's definitely worth a listen. The majority of the tracks are entire transformations using brief samples of the originals. The first side has a heavy club and house feel but the second is more classic Sophie weirdness. It might be a little impenetrable to some but I really enjoy it. A lot of the first side makes for really great study music. Once again a great video, so much in depth research, genuinely so impressive! Also unrelated but I've been listening to Mood Ring by Britney Spears lately and I was wondering if you'd ever do a video on region and retailer exclusive bonus tracks?

since i’m a massive ayumi hamasaki stan, i feel the need to talk about her and her remixes! WARNING this is going to be very VERY long ayumi hamasaki is a japanese pop singer who debuted in 1998 with her single “poker face” and has since become one of the greatest j-pop artists of all time with almost 40 #1 hits to her name and career record sales of more than 60 million. one of the things she’s known for however is her remixes! back in the late 90s to early 2000s when Japan was making its transition from 8cm mini singles to 12cm maxi singles, it was common for artists to feature multiple remixes and alternate versions of a song (as well as new B-side tracks) on the single to entice consumers into buying the CD. ayu was definitely no stranger to this and from 1999 to 2002 it was common for her to release album length maxi singles that would feature up to 10 different remixes of the title track along with a couple of mixes of her previous singles or album cuts. in 1999, ayu released her first remix album “ayu-mi-x” which featured remixed versions of songs from her debut album “A Song for XX”. the album was highly successful reaching #4 on the Oricon charts and selling almost 400k copies. since then, ayu has made “ayu-mi-x” a series, with the most recent, “ayu-mi-x 7”, coming out in 2011. outside of ayu-mi-x, other remix album series include “ayu trance”, which as the name implies is trance-focused, and “ayu-ro mix”, which is eurobeat focused. these albums, along with her maxi singles, cemented ayu as a remix icon sort of in a way like how mariah is one in the US. thanks to them, ayu’s music has become a mainstay in house, trance and eurobeat spaces not just in Japan, but as well as around the world! the success of her trance remixes, namely the Above & Beyond remix of her 2000 hit “M”, became a global classic in the trance scene, with remix singles of the song coming out (and even charting!) in Europe! ayu has been remixed by top DJs in Japan and around the world such as HAL, Hex Hector, Thunderpuss, Armin van Buuren, Ferry Corsten, etc. and it is estimated that she has around 500 to 600 different remixes in her entire discography!! today, with the rise of streaming and digital media, maxi singles have been phased out in favor of one-track digital singles, but that doesn’t mean ayu is done with the remixes! in 2021, she released “Complete Editions” of her “ayu trance” and “ayu trance 2” albums to celebrate the 20th anniversary of the series with new cuts and versions of remixes featured on those albums, and now in 2023, she featured a remix of her single “Nonfiction” by Yohanne Simon on her latest album “Remember you” (which, fun fact, made her the female solo artist with the most top 10 albums in Japan of all time!) i know this was like suuuuuper long but her music is something i’m very passionate about, and i hope that more people will check her and her remixes out! 🫶🏼

I love Mariah Carey’s remix catalog. She often recorded fully new vocals for her club mixes and let the producers take the song wherever they wanted. She also redid vocals for ‘always be my baby’ which was remixed by Jermaine Dupri and featured a verse from Da Brat and vocals from Xscape. She also resang ‘heartbreaker’ for the remix w Da Brat and Missy Elliot

Some acts have used remixes as a way to keep themselves relevant due to a hiatus or even after the band has broken up. INXS has done this to great effect both after the passing of Michael Hutchence and after the band formally stopped being active in the 2010s.

I completely agree with that theory. I have the same theory. And I actually think that some artist want a feature on their song, but hold off to do a remix to propel it further. Because if they come out with the feature out the gate, there’s no more gas to put on the fire. I also have noticed that when releasing an album, artist will put out a single and then put out a new song every couple of weeks until the album comes out and every time they put out a new song/single all the previous songs that were released, are added to that single which is another way to help streams and charts.

I think so too! Like they purposely wait to see how the song performs first, and then they go for the “remix” to add a little more hype

When I think of a modern version of a remix I think of the anti-hero remixes bc a lot of new remixes are just giving you’re song to a random dj/edm Artist to do their own production but I feel like more people should do remixes where they feature with an artists like Beyoncé did with break my soul (queens remix) or Taylor did with karma (ice spice remix)

I would love to see a video of you talking about the influence of Brazilian music in the US, especially the Brazilian funk genre that’s been getting a pretty notorious attention of artists that are non-Brazilians at all. Including several features of artists with big career’s in the US with Brazilians artists that we been getting recently, like Pabllo Vittar with Lady Gaga, and Charli XCX too (at this point even Rina collaborated w her), Anitta with her “big” break outside of Brazil, and Tove Lo doing a feature with ZAAC. 💞🇧🇷

I prefer a reimagine I understand why we have the remixes we have in the streaming age, but even minor changes can help elevate a song. There's many examples, but these are only a few off the top of my head. The changes in a few are minor, but enough to be considered more of a remix than a lot of what we get these days. Some examples of mine: Monica - So Gone Remix w Busta Rhymes Destiny's Child - Bills, Bills, Bills (Trackmaster Remix) JoJo - When Love Hurts (Real Love Remix) Inayah - Best Thing (Bounce Remix) Little Mix - How Ya Doin' w Missy Elliott Ashanti - Unfoolish (sequel to Foolish with new verses and slightly different chorus) Destiny's Child - Independent Woman, Part 2 Usher - Confessions, Part 2

Omg thank you so much for covering this topic!! I thought I was the only one who noticed that "remixes" nowadays are just features and not reimaginings of songs. I honestly do like and miss those types of remixes better. I think a feature remixes CAN work, but only if the featured artist is in the WHOLE SONG and the current verses are changed up somehow. The best example of that I could think of is Taylor Swift's remix of bad blood with Kendrick Lamar. As far as my favorite reimagining; idk, anything from like 98-04 lol.

I think the artists today, they lack either the funding or the creativity for remixes. The concept has been deduced just adding a rap verse for the sole purpose of charting higher on the charts. Artists like Mariah Carey, Destiny's Child, & Mary J. Blige have released a whole entire album of their remix songs. It's about providing a different experience to the same song
