I have read the book, I was there the day of the match race, my dad worked for LeRoy's father Moody Jolly. I loved that filly even though I was told not to cheer for her. I cry for her every July, I remember the terror in every horse we had that broke down, I know exactly how she looked getting on that trailer. Bill wrote about her waking up from the anesthesia so well. I have been with animals waking from surgeries, you would have thought he was in the room.

I read the book “Ruffian Burning From The Start” in one sitting at Borders Bookshop. I made a total spectacle of myself because I couldn’t stop crying. I did buy the book as well as any others that I’ve found about Ruffian. She was so very special. I know someone who was close to the Janneys and he told me that he just kept asking them why??? They apparently didn’t want the match but felt pressured by the public pressure that became so great. Watching films of her breakdown is more than I can handle. It must have been heartbreaking to be there.

@@angelaalberts7247I absolutely don’t mean to ask this in a negative way but I’m curious, in “Ruffian Burning From The Start” Moody Jolley was quoted as saying, loud enough to be heard on camera, “First time they threw some speed at her, and the bitch comes unbuckled”. Did he really feel that way? If so that’s horribly sad. Leroy Jolley was said to have been in a difficult position because of how bad everything had gotten but the Greers were apparently happy in Foolish Pleasures “victory”. It must have been so sad and difficult for you in particular since you loved Ruffian.

Ruffian you had nothing to prove with all the hype for this match race.. you had a perfect record and was so superior.. Shame Shame on the media for letting this match race happen.. Later on in the fall of the year you would have beaten all the best handicap horses..

I still can't believe my uncle was in this movie. He plays Braulio Baeza. His name is Cisco Torres. He's a jockey. But to me, He's Tio Cisco

I was at that race when I was a kid. My late father was a friend of Leroy Jolley the Trainer of Foolish Pleasure. I wanted the filly to win. Most people did because she was perfect.

Frank Whaley is the actor who plays Bill Nack. He didn't misspell anything.

me too. I had one from the original run that was stolen so I found one (years before Ebay) I spent twice as much on, then when Ebay came around I got 2 more and only spent $6.

There must be a way to keep horses from breaking their legs ,and dying during horse races.😞

There is, unfortunately exercise science and modern medical care are foreign to racehorse trainers.
