Secretariat was not a failure as a sire, his greatness was carried on through his daughters. Besides, it was pretty much an impossible task to sire a horse as great as himself, he was only the greatest race horse who has ever lived, bar none. Thank you boy, no one will ever forget you who loves racing, Thoroughbreds, and the truth. I saw you win the triple crown when I was 12 years old, there has yet to be another one like you. RIP big red. I for one, will never forget seeing one of the greatest moments of my life.

I noticed how Ron very gently kept excited people away from Red after the races. A hand gesture and a tip of the head seemed to get the over eager to step back from a horse still excited by the race. Also, the draping of flowers seems to be something they never rehearsed! Of course the team might have thought rehearsing would cause bad luck. Turcotte seemed a very gentle person who passed his calm on to his rides.

Right on! All the people seemed nice and tried to never trash talk other horses and riders. Nice can never be over rated. He sold for only $17,500 as a yearling whereas Secretariat probably would have sold for a record price if he had gone through the ring. Secretariat was an incredibly beautiful thoroughbred and had the sire (Bold Ruler was God back in the ‘70s) and dam to match. Few of these incredibly successful racehorses can reproduce their success in the breeding shed. Nijinsky was an exception and next to his sire, Northern Dancer, was probably the pre eminent sire in the world.

No one wanted the fairy tale to end. But that would be the ultimate, impossible dream.... There will never be another Secretariat...He was a freak of nature, like catching lightning in a bottle. We've been graced with freaks, from time to time ( without debating the greatest race horse of all time). Man O' War, Lexington, Sir Archie...they are few, and far between. But that's what keeps us going to the barn at 4am, 7 days a week, 365 days a year. @@TheJustjim3333 That’s probably because Riva Ridge saved her stable from financial ruin. Things were bad at the farm and everybody in the family wanted to sell, but Penny was the only one who even enjoyed the horses. Then Riva Ridge came around and became a champion horse in 1971 and money started flowing in so the family stopped trying to get Penny to sell. So much was made about the coin flip that ultimately led to Penny getting Secretariat, but without Riva Ridge, Secretariat probably would have gone to somebody else and who knows how things would have turned out.

He turned out to be a GREAT broodmare sire, like his maternal grandsire, Princequillo. I learned reading Nack's bio and others that the foundation of any breeding operation is the "blue hens" the best broodmares. His daughters produced Storm Cat, A. P. Indy and others. The Male culture is hung up on the strutting stallion dyndrome, reproducing himself. Sports Illustrated actually mocked Secretariat as a dud or some other derogatory remark. Cretons.

I think that we really have to give Penny Chenery a lot of credit for Secretatiat. Can you imagine that he was won from a coin toss! Penny knew horses from being brought up on a horse farm and from her father. She had purpose, knowledge and backbone! She knew SomethingRoyal's pedigeree as well as Bold Ruler's! She knew their was speed and stamina! I truly believe that it was God's call that gave it all to Secretariat! As we know, genetics don't always happen this way. However, Secretariat was the recipient of this, plus beauty, brains and personality. Yes, Secretariat is my favorite horse, but I'm not naïve enough not to love and respect many of the great racehorse's before him. I hate to see him trashed. He not only set records, he saved a farm and a family. There are so many beautiful attributes surrounding Secretariat. If breeding would just get back to basics, quit screwing with artificial insemination, (yes, I know it is done in many animal arenas)! If nature is led to take it's course, greatness will prevail! Penny knew what she had. Bull Hancock was less convinced. He had to go through with the breeding of Secretariat because of a gentlemen's handshake he made with Penney's father prior to his taking ill. With that being said, maybe that is why Secretariat's fans get a huge hair up their but when he is dinged for races he lost that was out of his control! I don't think that when Secretariat was born, who could know that he would become a hero to racing and get his family farm out of debt? I have read that to make 1 genetic change to a stallion takes 10 years for it to materialize! Why make changes? This boggles my mind. Not to mention OTB has taken away the thrill of the race. Honestly, IMHO, we have to get back to basics to experience true greatness again!

Give Chris Chennery his due as a great breeder. An equal to Tesio. One small farm in a state with no racing producing two Derby and Belmont winners in a row. It might have been two triple crowns in a row but for mud on Preakness day '72. The tragedy of him not being able to enjoy the culmination of his life effort is sad.

Secretariat was a race horse. These folks who say he was a failure at stud just don't understand- there is no way he could have reproduced himself. But he did give us many quality runners and was an excellent broodmare sire. However he will always be remembered for that magical Triple Crown in 1973 culminating in the Belmont for the ages. To this day I can't watch that tape without getting choked up as he turns for home. That's why Secretariat is so beloved: on the biggest stage he performed unparalleled. He was the best.

It is more important that he produced broodmare sires. It was genetically impossible for him to pass on himself to a son. They traced the source of his 21 pound heart back a few hundred years and found that the male horse gave the unusual extra large heart to his daughter and they passed it onto their sons. How he came out to be not just the most perfectly built horse and "Test of Champion" winner is still today seen as an astronomically impossible fluke!

No whips. why? When you blow your nearest competitor away by 31 lengths you probably do not require the whip.btw to judge the future one second equates to about 7.5 lengths. so if the current winner of the Belmont runs it in 2:30 Secretariat would have beaten him by 45 lengths! marysueeasteregg it's funny you mention those two horses, I'm from Bible Hill Nova Scotia, grew up next to the harness racing tack, but never got into it that much, although most of my friends were all horsemen made their living in the industry. Back in 2002 I sold my dinner business, always tried to treat my managers and staff well, gave them a nice bonus when I sold, the managers and kids knew I was a golf freak so they bought me a 3 day/night golf package at the " Highland Links" golf course in the Cape BretonHighlands, ( my favorite course in the world), It was for two people so I took my good friend Bob Macdonald, originly from PEI, some how we got arguing during the drive up, " who came first, Northern Dancer or Secratariet, I said Secratariet came after northern dancer, now he comes from a big horse family in PEI, and say would you take my fathers word for it, Now, mind you ,I was 10 years old in 1973, So Bob Says I Bet you thousand dollars, he opens the center console of his new BMW, ( this was 2002). Up pops a factory installed phone, looks at it and says " call Dad". I'm think " WTF", Sure enough his father answears, he's about eighty, ask him who came first, his dad say's " Jesus Christ Bob" every body knows Nothern dancer was in the 60's and Secratariet was in the seventies, bob says good day and hangs up, no hi , boo, kiss my ass nothing, just hung up on his dad, Looks over at me and said how the hell did you know that, I said easy, Northern Dancer was in black and white and Secratariet was in color, Mofo, kicked me out of his BMW, But when I got there the patatoe picking basterd had a drink for me in one hand and a thousand dollars in the other, spent it all at the bar on both of us in three days, hahaha.

If he had been trained and raced by people no one knew he never would have been syndicated. Thus his ONLY important record is winning the Triple Crown and breaking speed and endurance records. Those wins were never intended to be contingent on his foal production. If Red had not won as he did when he did he never would have been syndicated. The wins stand on their own.
