Frank Zappa at The Roxy Theatre in Hollywood, California on December 8, 9 and 10, 1973.
While waiting for the "Roxy DVD" (a trailer is contained in the Baby Snakes DVD), this is what is available at now:
00:00 Intro (3:50)
03:50 Montana (7:00)
10:50 The Hook - The Booger Man - Dupree's Paradise (20:30)
Frank Zappa -- guitar, vocals, producer
Napoleon Murphy Brock -- flute, tenor saxophone, vocals
Robert "Frog" Camarena -- backing vocals ("Cheepnis")
Debbie -- backing vocals ("Cheepnis")
Lynn - backing vocals ("Cheepnis")
Ruben Ladron de Guevara -- backing vocals ("Cheepnis")
George Duke -- synthesizer, keyboards, vocals
Bruce Fowler -- trombone, dancer
Tom Fowler -- bass guitar
Walt Fowler -- trumpet, bass trumpet
Ralph Humphrey -- drums
Don Preston -- synthesizer
Jeff Simmons -- rhythm guitar, vocals
Chester Thompson -- drums
Ruth Underwood -- percussion
This video was showed as intro at some of the 2006 ZPZ shows, later was made available for streaming at Zappa.Com, Montana is available in the DVD Classic Albums: Frank Zappa - Apostrophe(')/Over-Nite Sensation (none of the above is available in Roxy & Elsewhere album);
Dummy Up (partial - 3:00):this fragment is contained in "The True Story Of 200 Motels."
"Unreleased DVD"
There was a 3 minute trailer released in the new millennium advertising a Roxy DVD which could potentially contain the footage from all three nights. The trailer was later included on the Baby Snakes DVD as a bonus feature.
Joe Travers has stated that "It's sitting in the vault. Waiting for a budget to do it properly. Basically the film footage, the negatives were transferred by Frank in the '80s using '80s technology. What we want to do is go back to the original negatives and do it in High Definition and then create a 5.1 mix from the original masters so that we have surround sound as well as Frank's 2 channel stereo mix. Once we get all that together, then we need to cut the program. Edit the program together, camera angles, what shows, what we are going to include from what shows or include all the shows. I have no idea what Dweezil and Gail want to do. It's great stuff, but the process of just getting to that point is going to cost a lot of money and take a lot of time." [1] Two songs from the unreleased film ("Montana" and "Dupree's Paradise") were used as opener for the Zappa Plays Zappa concerts in 2006.
On April 1, 2007, Zappa.com unveiled a redesigned website, which included the 30-minute segment from the Roxy performances, which had been used at the Zappa Plays Zappa concerts, on its new videos page.
The clip for "Montana" was included as a bonus feature of the Classic Albums: Apostrophe(')/Over-Nite Sensation DVD, which was released on May 1, 2007.(Wiki)

10-15 years ago, I began listening to Zappa's music in earnest and found myself going deep, I mean REAL deep. I listened to everything I could get my hands on, not just once or twice by ten times through or more. I read books he authored, learned many of his songs and formed a band to play them. And I'm not the fanboy type. Far from it. He's the first artist I've been that enthralled with because Frank isn't just music, he's a way of living: awake and aware, fully engaged, forthright, and a force to behold.

I thought I had seen most of the good Zappa footage. Roxy was always my favorite Zappa LP. The clip lately with the wonderful performance with Pamela the dancer was sheer satisfaction. Now this--- starting with Montana, arriving at a disassembled trombone, lots of precision chaos, then a mind bending free jam in 5/8 that is uncountable, and ending with Frank demonstrating how long it takes to get your guitar in perfect tune by playing with Duke on piano while checking all the harmonics on the guitar. What could be better?

At risk of presuming to speak for Paul, I'd say that Zappa was unique in a way that is more unique than most people. He would have been sarcastic, but I don't care. Zappa was God.
@BerlinerStadtschloss
@BerlinerStadtschloss 11 жыл бұрын
Mambo Bananapatch Nobody is "God" and the least Person to be is Zappa. He only impresses so many People for one reason: He played in the wrong league. He had the ability on a classical Composer and played to rock-audiences; he acted like a professional Footballer who preferred to Play in a Team of 12 - year - old - ones. If you regard it sharply, he was quite a fake.
@paulkennethjohnson
@paulkennethjohnson 11 жыл бұрын
Hmmm, interesting debate. He had a wide repertoire as a classical composer, an improvisational virtuoso, a rock composer, as an aleatoric electronic composer, as a humourist and a thousand other things. Is that to say, +BerlinerStadtschlos, that no rock music should be intelligent, or complex? Personally, I consider most of what he achieved in his work transcended mere genre and definition. Music is a many-splendoured, kaleidoscopic field, Zappa was bold enough to stroke its many feathers, plucking out the ones he liked best. He was also the most candid and honest commentator on the music industry. To say he was 'quite a fake' to be raising the bar of expectation of what rock music could/should be and to be making more money from it than he ever could as a classical composer (which he was as well) is quite wrong-headed. though. It's like comparing coca-cola to Remy Martin; they are for different audiences and different contexts, neither is better. A classical composer is not by definition 'better', anymore than a jazz performer is by definition better. Rock music, like any genre, despite its constant predilection to regress, imitate and rehash, will always have mavericks like Zappa who push the agenda forward and explore possibilities, dragging their disoriented audience along behind them. We need those mavericks in every walk of life; to imply that he was 'dossing about' just because the rest of the creatives in the sphere he was in were unable to keep up is, frankly, incorrect. If I regard your comment sharply, you are being a snob.
@bananapatch
@bananapatch 11 жыл бұрын
BerlinerStadtschloss, Zappa was God as I understand him. This whole debate is stupid. People, including myself, arguing about the correctness of purely subjective opinions, are stupid.

There are moments in this that just make me weep with joy and disbelief. So amazing to see these superb musicians moving deftly from the rehearsed to the spontaneous and back again without a hitch. If you've ever picked up an instrument and really tried to play it well, you can appreciate how stunning this is. Sure, great jazz musicians do it all the time. But nobody has the feel of Zappa and his bands -- Was (Not Was) comes close, though.

does humor belong in music? fz lyrics are humorous, witty, intelligent, scathing, different and sometimes down right raunchy in a clever way. the aspect of his art seriously got under some folks skin in good ways for those who love his music. i play drums and got turned on to him around the time started, i was 12 and was instantly blown away by what i heard, and i'm still blown away by it...this is the work of a true artiste' and a true musical genius, plain and simple.

Thank you so much for posting this. I've listened to the Roxy album so many times that the movie is already inside my head. So this is like the best DVD extra ever. The world doesn't spin as lightly on its axis as it did when God loaned Frank Zappa to us.

What a trip ! What pleasure for all the senses ! This music is magic, and so well played ! Nothing's been done that can equal the roxy & elsewhere period, in my opinion.
