Yeah they probably think you are lame because you do not listen to what the radio feeds you.... sad. The jam band scene though has a lot of decent jazz fusion bands that are worth noting. Nothing good is on the actual radio.

The fact that Steve Vai, as an 18 year old kid, had the balls and skills to play with Frank Zappa is a testament to his genius. Even his mentor, Joe Satriani, admits that he is jealous at times over his natural talent.

A few years back I rewrote Son of Orange County to reflect modern times: "And in your dreams, you can see yourself/ making a profit/groping young girls/the words from your lips: "Whattya got to lose?"/I just can't believe you are such a fool/I just can't believe you are such a *tool*....". (Alternate drop-in quotes include "only I can do it", "I am your vengeance", or "you'll get tired of winning"). Anyway, perhaps Dweezil will be motivated to update another song, originally about Nixon, to reflect that "Donnie's Such An A-hola". I also remember an interview from maybe 40 years ago where Frank warned that the evangelicals were trying to take over the United States government. He was prophetic, and if he were alive today he'd probably be surprised only by the fact that that it took them so long......😖

A friend invited me in 1978 to see Frank Zappa. I was very young about 16 year's old. I had seen a little about music like Dire Strait, Fleetwood Mac, Genesis and some belgian bands but i always remembered that night in Brussel. I didn't know nothing about Zappa and when i heared his music i understood music was different, everything possible and funny and since then, Zappa's universe makes me believe in something else about human being, hope maybe whatever. I even went to USA to see him 5 times, Zappa was kind of an extra influence and when i listen his son i know that i didn't fool myself to love his music. Bravo Mister Dweezil!

I bought the "Hot Rats" vinyl album in 1970, and my whole world changed, musically--expanded. Vai just never came close to Zappa. He's a gimmick player. Jumps around the fretboard, does gimmick one, jumps to position two...does gimmick two. Zappa actually played a storyline from beginning to end. And it all made musical sense. Never just a bunch of position flurries with zero continuity and mostly non-sequiturs.
@Jh-fi5im
@Jh-fi5im 2 жыл бұрын
@@toncuz8291 You should really listen to more of Vai's solo stuff if you really think that. For example, "Lotus Feet" is an amazing piece that he composed and played for the Holland Metropole Orchestra. Search up the live video on KZbin, I guarantee you that you'll change your mind then. And other songs like "For The Love Of God" and "Tender Surrender" are so damn emotional. He's even got stuff that's less shreddy like the song "Frank" dedicated to Frank Zappa. His playing is way different than Frank's but isn't any less meaningful.
@toncuz8291
@toncuz8291 2 жыл бұрын
Thank you for the info...but, that's the problem. I have heard several Vai tunes and have yet to hear a great story-line or good continuity of thought (that lasted more than a few measures). Listen to Zappa's studio version of "Inca Roads". Utterly exquisite. It's as if each measure was designed to perfectly resolve from the last. Even Zappa's "Live In New York" had extemporaneous solo's that exceeded so many player's ability to "connect" musical language in such amazing congruence. Zappa's "question and answer" ability was possibly second to none. Listen to Santana's "Europa" and "Revelations". Both have some pretty demonic overtones, and you know exactly what he's saying, from beginning to end. Your adrenaline will be depleted. Changing registers to sound like you're leading the listener to another place en route to resolution, is only ok if the player returns to the theme in a perfect route to that resolution. Vai's technical prowess far exceeded his musicality. Many technicians use their "runs" to mask their lack of true musical thinking skills.

Always cracks me up. Zappa creates one of the most lyrical pieces he’s ever written then adds a seriously acerbic bite and takes a serious crap on Nixon. Even better, that smooth, buttery voice of npb adding to same. Nothing like it now or since. This was a trademark. He always had a wry smirk in his compositions. Great examples are the Reggae version of “Ring of Fire” and “Andy” with its blues version of a prison boy story. Who else but Zappa thinks of this stuff? This creativity extends to his genre-melting treatments of harmony, rhythm, and melody. Whoever says he was just a blues player doesn’t understand the fundamentals of blues, music in general, rock, jazz, music theory, or Zappa himself (hard as that is to do). Never boring or repetitive, His tongue was firmly in cheek at all times both in his comedic songs, experimental chord structures, use of odd intervals, rhythm, and composition. Nothing was sacred. To some, his music sounds disjointed or confused. It most certainly wasn’t. There was serious method to his work, and it was consistent throughout his career. His solos were magic. Some contemporary rock, blues, classical, etc, others experimental, still others modal jazz inspired. The musician in him abhorred convention. Same goes for the satirist that he was. No wonder he still fascinates us. I suspect he’ll do so for a long time to come.

I actually didn't know much Zappa before discovering the full length video of this concert. The musicianship of literally every member of this band blew me away. I had tried to get Zappa a few times since about 30yrs ago as a student, listened to Nanook and Cozmic debris but didn't get it back then. The full length video had so much content that I listened to very little else for about a year till I knew every fill and solo. Sheila playing keyboard and sax simultaneously was a highlight among many. Shouldn't have been surprised as she teaches at Berklee, and that tells me enough! Dweezil got me into Frank😊 Hopefully he'll come back to the UK as I have to go see some of this.

Keith Hall I think it's in the DNA. I mean it's not the exact same, of course, the Dweez does a lot of hammers and pull offs, being a big fan of Eddie and, I'm sure, Vai, but the level of his play and that of this band is pretty damn high, and that's where Frank and his band mates played without exception. Of course Dweezel is a more benevolent leader, but quality is very close. Of course having Napoleon Murphy sing helps bring the sound back to Mother bands gone by.

I understand not exactly the same, Frank was more manic and sporadic in his playing (which I love) Dweez is much smoother with the guitar. (I just know Dweez is one hell of a guitarist these days) Its great watching ex Mothers playing with Dweez such as Vai. Bozzio, and certainly one of my favorites NMB... even Scott Thunes I am sure was on one ZPZ video.

Holy Christ on a stick. I kept watching this video thinking "Ahh, i'll only watch a couple more minutes to see the end of this groove" Wellp, I'm 17 minutes in, wondering if I'll be able to resist watching the next Zappa plays Zappa video I find.

rob g Fair comment. The entire line-up is exceptionally brilliant ! But just as one can eat something rich and sweet and were to eat too much one would feel queasy, that's how Vai affects me. Lovely in small amounts but I couldn't listen to a whole show of that kind of playing.

In today's world a trade founded by the father is rapidly becoming something of the past, considering that many kids don't carry on where their fathers left off (instead they arse about with their Iphones and are not creative). Dweezil has the power to keep his father's music, genius, and legend alive (and I hope Dweezil's kids will continue too), this assures his musical genius and inspiration will never cease to exist. The man was a musical pioneer, I love his sound and style, and when I hear stuff like this it positively charges me! Long live the name FRANK ZAPPA, and long live his creations. Thankyou Dweezil Sir for continuing to share your father's music with us!

I was at the Portland show,(This was recorded 2-consecutive nights, in Seattle and portland) and I get goosebumps every time I see these pieces. GET the full dvd! Sheila was incredible. Dweezil and the band was great, Napolean Murphy Brock (Nappy) did a fantastic job, particularly on Zombie Woof. Steve Vai blows me away every time. That "Duel" was staggering!! Bozzio is always fun to watch in his monstor kit. All around....THE best show of my life! and I"M at about 400 shows now, Since `74.
