Frank was a huge free speech advocate giving testimony in Congress. Brilliant album is one of his best.

Two other artists who testified for free speech were Dee Snyder and John Denver. That last must have surprised the reactionary Senators who were maybe expecting some support. They hadn't heard Denver singing with The Mitchell Trio.

Saw Zappa 1973 concert @ Kent State when he had a full leg cast on and was hopping around all over the stage. Incredibly, he opened for Mahavishnu Orchestra! When the concert was over we could hardly move. I knew Zappa could play the guitar but I never really knew how excellently until that night when he played a 20 minute solo. Musical genius. All those years ago..

Damn, I miss Zappa so much. One of the most original concerts I've ever seen. He came out in a black tuxedo with tails and a conductor's baton and proceeded to orchestrate the entire band. He then picked up his guitar and shredded the hell out of it. I'm originally from Sacramento, California and there was a radio station called KZAP. It was named after Frank. He used to come to the station all the time when he was in the area and give interviews.

This is for an adult audience. Did you know that Tina Turner and the Ikettes are singing background and doing the no cooties on me! parts. IF you haven't done it before, look closely at the album cover. Lots to be discovered there. It is said that Frank sat with musical paper and wrote songs while flying to the next gig. Be well. Greg in TN 😀

Now I just think it’s hilarious and love that he “pushed the envelope” as only Frank Zappa could do! Great request and reaction. Check out his live DVD "Does Humor Belong In Music?", highly entertaining. Zappa always surrounded himself with top shelf musicians because he was such a perfectionist. The guy was an absolute genius. In a world where that term is thrown around like smarties, Frank was the real deal.

Any musician that had "played for Frank Zappa" pretty much had a passport to play anywhere. Our son studied saxophone under Frank's former saxist, Paul Carmen, who played for a decade with him all over the world. He is now a professor of jazz at Idyllwild Arts Academy; Casey Abrams ilumni. Frank MADE musicians

Frank can form an Amazing Image in your mind. A Master Story Teller. Just some great Lyrics to give you an image exactly what he wants you to see. His 2:00 Rock Opera "Joe's Garage" is a monument to his story telling. This is not a tune I would introduce to a new Zappa Fan until he is firmly hooked. Something a bit easier to Digest. Try "Man from Utopia meets Mary-Lou" A much easier tuner. Or go with Zombie Woof, or Florentine Pogan, large catalog, so many different styles.

My introduction to Frank Zappa was as a teenager in 1985 hanging out with a co-worker after work. He was a bit of a stoner, and his older brother was a huge Zappa fan. He was adamant that I'd love this crazy stuff his brother listened to, so he threw "Overnight Sensation" and "Apostrophe'" on the stereo and we sat there drinking beer and jamming. Been listening to him ever since, good stuff!

Listening to Mr. Zappa at the age of 17 in the 1970's was enlightening. Listening to him perform the songs from this album *live* was enthralling. But listening to him talk to Congress as an adult was electrifying. :D Everyone is still trying to figure out what political party he belonged to. That's a shame because Zappa was talking to *everybody* in that Congressional hearing and *every* single average American who cared to watch and listen to what goes on in Congress each and every day. Which is what we all *should* do since it affects our *lives* as the years go by...

Oh man don't miss Stink foot, Bobby Brown, Dancin' fool and Muffin man. And keep an eye open for the clay animations Bruce Bickford did for Zappa's music. Bickford was a mad genius. If you go seriously into Zappa wait till you get to his classical material. Little known fact: Frank Zappa was included in the French dictionnary Le Robert while he was still alive. A rarity.

Frank Zappa's music is definitely experimental, and very unique. He was a brilliant man, and a complete rebel before it became fashionable to be a rebel. I taught at the high school he graduated from for 10-years (decades after he graduated, of course). He's kinda their pride and joy now but was probably a challenging kid. It's called Antelope Valley High School and is in the high desert in North Los Angeles County. Anyway, his music used to make me laugh my ass off when I was a kid. My favorite Zappa album is probably Joe's Garage.

he had a young girlfried from antelope high...this story is unknown amongst most Zappa fans...he got caught by his father whilst fooling around with the girl....this is where and why Zappa loves doowop....right....his father made a B-line to her father and told him...The very next day she was gone...her house was empty and the parents probably being military family packed up and went....Frank knew nothing and the love of his life was gone without a goodbye... he later met her but time becomes a moat that one can't fathom... listen to this song that Frank never released while he was alive.... kzbin.info/www/bejne/joSze2enlpKqgrM this is why Frank has a soft spot for doo wop because it was their music as teens in love...

@@mikedemike5393 I listened to it! Cute song, and very interesting story! It seems like living in his orbit may have been a little daunting, but never boring. I can't believe he was ratted out by his own father. I can't help but wonder if it affected their relationship in any long-term way.

They were very different artists, and both legitimate in their respective roles. Frank is inimitable though, with the closest homage belonging to Al Yankovich’s brilliant Genius in France tune. I didn’t feel this gent was suggesting that Frank was imitating Prince, he just noted some similarities with backing vocal styles. I’m sure that contemporaries of Mozart were probably saying he wasn’t worth a pimple on Bach’s ass too. I think Frank’s music is way more challenging, but Prince was a genius in his own right.

Zappa and Prince there are parallels, but they really are both entirely different. Both absolute geniuses. Prince was very much into his religious faith. Zappa was anti-organized religion and basically agnostic. Prince was a multi insturment phenom. Zappa was a very good guitar player, sometimes an amazing soloist, but not a virtuoso by any means. Both were orignal and brilliant in how the arranged their music and both as band leaders could be very demanding of their musicians. There are multiple facets to Zappa and no single song or even album can adequately define the man and his catolog is huge. He died only 54 years old and in that time released 62 record albums. "One Size Fits All" and his "Roxy & Elsewhere" albums is I think some of this strongest work and best band lineups.
