Unfortunately, I can totally relate to your sentiment about the sudden cringe moments, when you remind yourself of something embarrassing you did, and go ‘ough’ out loud. The melody to Packard was actually derived from the words. Bassist Arthur Barrow recalled that “all of the odd time rhythms in the vocal sections of the song are based almost entirely on the lyrics. We worked off the lyric sheet, following the words on the page only; there were no music charts. We were mostly just playing the rhythms of the words with the type of musical feel or groove that Frank wanted.” From Charles Ulrich’s book The Big Note
When I was 18 years old, and I would try to explain to somebody what a "Zappa GUITAR SOLO...LIVE" felt like...I would say "The group would form a plateau of harmonies on which Zappa could frolic on the guitar as he wished." That ...of corse...sounds weird to the average person. But... there's really no other way to explain it in words. And then this album came out... and it became much easier to explain. You just force all your friends to listen to this album.... lol.

Thanks for doing these Zappa reactions, Rory - really enjoy them. Great content as usual. 🙂👍The voice of Mrs Borg (played by Denny Walley) complaining about the noise, reminds me of the Zappa tracks "Cops & Buns" and "I Heard A Note." In "Cops & Buns" the police have been called out due to the noise and get in conversation with Zappa and others - one of the officers says he's been out to them that many times, he feels like he knows one of them like a brother! In "I Heard A Note," a neighbour complains about the band rehearsing, and you can hear Zappa getting frustrated before putting an end to the session. Even funnier, is Denny Walley was at this rehearsal! These are just a few of the real experiences Uncle Frank used in his music.

All of the solos from Joe's Garage are XENO-CHRONY....that's important to remember...but yes...Zappa's guitar solo's DO sound a bit like John Coltrane...and maybe a bit of Miles Davis.

Only a seasoned Zappa Fan can enjoy these Albums. If this album was a first time reaction to Zappa, they would not finish the review not understanding and not learning anything....

I think you are wrong. in the dayes this album was what made many of my friends to open there eyes..this and you are what you is. this album made zappa "mainstream". But you are right about that a seasoned Zappa fan understand the greatness of this epos on a higher level. Stop being special and knoth about what you feal..we all feal...and the meek shall be educated .....or..?inherrith nothing

Packard Goose is really Zappa telling the music press off. The solo would be remembered as one of his best if not for being followed by Watermelon in Easter Hay. And at the time this came out Al Dimeola had released Elegant Gypsy and they make some fun of Al’s guitar tone at the end.

In case no one said you need to read the inside of the album to understand it all its about what if you lived in a country were music was illegal and what happens if you dont toe the line

Have to check out MAX WEBSTER from the first album and up ...they were called Canadas answer to Frank Zappa....not so much the music as Max is more rock and roll ...but the quirky lyrics was the reasons....plus RORY they backed up RUSH for much of there younger tour days. They did make a song together with RUSH called Battlestar. Love there debut album HANGOVER and second album HIGH CLASS IN BORROWED SHOES

I believe the word you're looking for in the beginning of "He Used To Cut The Grass" is jazz. It's more of a freeform style of jazz, rather than traditional or contemporary. I can understand how you'd draw from the likes of a Frank Sanatra.
