You may or may not know, that Frank never set out to write a rock opera. They went into the studio to record two songs, ‘Joe’s Garage’ and ‘Catholic Girls’. “And the next thing you knew, we had all these tracks laid down.” FZ. He basically realised there was a story there and made it up as he went along. Even some of the musicians didn’t realise until it came out. The full title of Watermelon was “Playing a guitar solo with this band is like trying to grow a watermelon in easter hay”, which is to describe his problem if a band member was overplaying his part. The thing you’re talking about things coming back or being carried over is what Frank called Conceptual Continuity. Anyway, it’s been great rediscovering Joe’s Garage with you on this trip! Chronologically, first of all, you have sleep dirt :) You need more? Then, good anology with Prince - another free mind and my favorite. This song (Watermelon) brings to the fore the sentence from the previous song - Music is the best... Oh, yes, Joe's Garage has some funny parts but it finally grabs you by the throat... because music is threatened. But it is good today we have music from the past. Of course, some exceptions in the 21st century music - like Nolan Potter's Nightmare Band :) Thank you for the reaction! Again, nice to listen together!

and man the way you explain the not understanding zappa is so perfect. Im turning 36 later this month and remember the first zappa album I got was his London Symphony Orchestra album and then the second I got was Hot Rats way back in maybe 2008 when I was a few years out of high school, but its kinda like telling someone to grind in a video game or some shit, like its some shit you learn like a language, and feel internally, and is almost impossible to really express to someone who just has not been through the process

Zappa was, an still is, very demanding of his listeners, you'll have to invest a lot to get/understand his music, but if you do put in the effort, you'l be repaid 1000-fold. Zappa Lives!

that last “song” is (to me) Frank saying - that last thing (Watermelon) about the death of a dream, was heavy (I don’t personally care if one person or another cared for it - Watermelon), and I (Frank) didn’t “mess with it”, and it was a sincere personal artistic expression in that context, at the end of an album of some kinda inarguably fantastic playing by this band, so… let’s just get the band, my family, a few of their friends, neighbors, etc., and meet me in the studio and we’ll (I’ll) make shit up, make in-joke references no one will get, and ya’ know - we’ll lighten the mood here before we get maudlin. “…because this is a stupid song - and that’s the way I like it”. an artist CAN actually be silly and funny AND deadly serious - it’s not a dichotomy. doesn’t mean you will like it / connect with it, but… it’s ultimately music, and done laughter at times. whatever, right? :-) seanM

Good expressions of your thoughts on Zappa. That's Zappa in a nutshell. To create something as beautiful as "Watermelon" and then follow it up with a silly nonsense; "Green Rosetta". This album is on my list of my favorite Zappa albums but I still pick up the needle and move it past the Central Scrutinizer and this is the 1st time I've heard Green Rosetta in probably 20 years.

There's no way Zappa's going to leave you in a dream. He has to come back to the discordance of the real world. He was never about escape. I think for Frank, the dream-like songs were far and few between. He saw them as a "Blessed Relief," a pit stop to rest in momentarily and gather strength for the next challenge. Frank was never a seeker of serenity.

WIEH being the only guitar solo on the LP which wasn’t Xenechronologicaly inserted. you’ve got the necessary experience to be the first to do a LP reaction to 1984’s Thing-Fish, which alongside 200 Motels, is FZ’s other multi sided extended story arc piece. "The simple thought behind Thing-Fish is that somebody manufactured a disease called AIDS and they tested it. They were developing it as a weapon and they tested it on convicts, the same way as they used to do experiments on black inmates, using syphilis. That's documented. They used to do these experiments with syphilis on black inmates in US prisons. That's fact. So we take it one step further and they're concocting the special disease which is genetically specific to get rid of 'all highly rhythmic individuals and sissy boys.' So I postulate that they do this test in a prison and part of the test backfires and these mutants are created." - Frank Zappa
