I was at this concert I brought in a small portable tape recorder in my fur coat (😄) and a microphone hidden in my long hair. All highly illegal 🙂. The tapes still function though rather poor quality of course. I always kept them as a souvenir. Encore: Camarillo Brillo, MuffinMan good quality. And a lot of fun hearing myself cheer 47 years later 😀. And thank you for sharing this. I was googling for a setlist but the ones I found were not correct and did not match my recording. Filthy habits is amazing...

@Zolar Czakl grazie..

Interesting hearing Napoleon sing the songs that Ray White is known for. How different the Zappa in New York album would have been if Napoleon had stuck around.
I think this show (and year) was the last gasp of the "Real Frank Zappa" Just like the title of his eponymous book, this was the last few years when he still retained elements of the 1960s and he actually PLAYED ripping guitar instead of hiring stunt guitarists. The band just retained more of that '60s feel. Chunga's Revenge in this concert highlights what I'm talking about. Parts of it sound like Uncle Meat and We're Only it 4 $. And "I Ain't Got No Heart" just doesn't sound the same with Ike Willis instead of Ray Collins.I loved Thingfish with Ike Willis mimicking the character actor from Amos 'n Andy, but as much as he's a great vocalist (like in "Joe's Garage") it started turning me off... along with the change to high-in-the-mix, strong synthesizer a-la Tommy Mars. Once again, great musician, but the LOUDNESS of the keys in Frank's shows after this just seemed artificially loud and overbearing. (I've played frisbee with Tommy. BTW). My main point: the biggest reason I got into Frank was his guitar playin,g. and it disappeared with his later bands... the Yellow Shark and orchestral stuff remained great, tho. But his live shows just seemed more sterile synthesized--dominated and programmed out.

@shootfirst2097 - And I prefer the '77-'88 live period myself...so your claim that the "Real Frank Zappa" was done after '76 is utterly absurd. I understand what you mean about the transformation of the bands sonically in different ways but that evolution is what Frank was all about. Also, you make it sound like his stunt guitarists like Steve Vai, Mike Keneally, etc. took over the lead guitar role in the band which just isn't true. Frank would write more intricate arrangements & passages for them to play, and they would add in different flourishes to the songs. They would take solos occasionally but Frank's guitar was still the main solo instrument of the concerts. For instance, during extended improvisations where various members took the lead, the final solo would 9 times out of 10 be taken by Frank. The exception to that was during the '88 tours where he wanted to highlight the fantastic horn section. He did say he wasn't as satisfied with his playing in '88, but there were still many fantastic moments. If you love his guitar playing, definitely check out shows from 1980. For starters, 4/29/80 in Upper Darby, PA (Early & Late) is a soundboard with some killer guitar from Frank. Lots of transcendent moments throughout 1980 including the Fall Tour. '81-'84 have tons of amazing playing too. Check out 9/1/1984 in Saratoga Springs...like the show opener Heavy Duty Judy, then stuff like I'm The Slime, Truck Driver Divorce and the 14+ minute Let's Move To Cleveland which goes off the rails (in a good way!). If you don't like the more prominent keyboards, I'm not sure what to tell you but the guitar was still there in the forefront well beyond '76!

It's the band with Napoleon Murphy Brock Andre Lewis Terry Bozzio Frank and Roy Estrada but this is a good band I enjoy it I'm not big on the lineup they had after that with Bianca Odin singing I just don't like a woman's voice in Zappa's music I'm sorry maybe songs off overnight and apostrophe but that's about it. Now I do like part of that lineup with Bianca that it had Eddie jobson incredible keyboardist in violinist from Roxy Music and went on to play with UK
