His Guitar solo story, is how he constructs his melodic lines. He created symbols that connect and intertwine, as George Duke explained it. For example, he can solo in a dominant major key , as one symbol of melodies, then segue it into a phrygian 7 Arab mode,to a blues scale back to a pentatonic scale. Then pure 12 tone chaos, then shredding when required, in short bursts, around the beginning and end of a solo.

And during baby snakes concert Halloween 1977, Bozzio drummer era. Best Zappa period. He put it all together by this year. Highest popular status, best selling album, by far. Best drummer for the prime style, finally mixing some Metal/Pop with his R and B Rock style, but controlling his chaos,a bit. After 1977, he only did variations of his prior styles. Frank blossomed, like a flower, in this period.

Back around 74 we went to an all-day concert in the old Atlanta Braves stadium with Ten Years After, Mountain ( I think) and Zappa. Sitting high in the upper deck, we played Trivia between acts. No-one knew the name of Tom Mix's horse. After about an hour Frank was tuning up onstage, stepped to the mic, said "Tom Mix's horse was Tony." We were knocked out! Our little game had spread all the way to Frank, who of course knew the answer. A man of the people indeed!

FWIW, this is the spoken introduction to the song that is missing from this video, it gives some context to it: The muffin man is seated at the table in the laboratory of the utility muffin Research kitchen... reaching for an oversized chrome spoon he gathers an Intimate quantity of dried muffin remnants and brushing his scapular aside Proceeds to dump these inside of his shirt... He turns to us and speaks: "Some people like cupcakes better. I for one care less for them!" Arrogantly twisting the sterile canvas snoot of a fully charged icing Anointment utensil he poots forth a quarter-ounce green rosette (oh ah yuk Yuk... let's try that again...!) he poots forth a quarter-ounce green rosette Near the summit of a dense but radiant muffin of his own design. Later he says: "Some people... some people like cupcakes exclusively, while myself, I say There is naught nor ought there be nothing so exalted on the face of god's grey Earth as that prince of foods... the muffin!" Note to those that don't know, the Utility Muffin Research Kitchen is what Zappa named his recording studio in his home...

9:24 There are a few good reasons for Zappa being so animated and crowd-friendly. First, his Halloween shows at the New York Palladium had been happening for a few years, and they had built up a fanatic local fanbase. Also, he was making a movie (BABY SNAKES), and there were breaks sometimes for camera issues, etc. The fans really kept their enthusiasm up for Frank, and for the film. Zappa seemed genuinely appreciative of their loyalty and enthusiasm. Also, doing the rock god bit was Frank's Halloween costume, for that year. Maybe.

The first lead guitarist, Adrian Belew, was the only band member Frank hired who didn't read music. He especially liked the way Belew used feedback. After Zappa, besides recording his own albums, Belew played with David Bowie, Talking Heads, and was a member of King Crimson for 25 years. Also see the Y.Tube video excerpt of the song "Stevie's Spanking", with Frank and Steve Vai trading licks. On the album covers it used to say "Steve Vai - Strat Abuse" or "Impossible Guitar Parts".

I saw Zappa with the Mothers way-back-when. Sometimes he got confrontational with the audience if they got out of hand, or he was just Zappa being Zappa with his stage persona in overdrive. They, in turn, would shout "Shut up an play your guitar!", which ended up being the title of a two record album of instrumental music he released years later. LOL! The thing was, he exposed his audiences to great musicians like Jean-Luc Ponty, and George Duke and, essentially, opened our ears to music that was beyond Rock n' Roll. He broke boundaries. Yes that was a great time to be doing music. Record companies threw money at bands just to make stuff that would sell. The musicians went wildly into their creativity. As for Zappa, he would not do what the companies told him to do, when they bothered to tell him anything. Eventually, he became mostly self produced. To this day, not only his old fans are still focused, but seeing you younger people being attracted is heart warming. In time look into Zappa Plays Zappa vids. This is Frank's son Dweezil. He frequently stages shows/tours with old time Zappa side men/women. Not sure, but I think there is now his own Muffin Man video.

So many great comments, and this might have been said: this footage is from the legendary NYC Halloween performances at the Palladium, 1977 edition, all the shows from that year have been release in a live album fairly recently by the Zappa family (see the great review on Rolling Stone Mag). The first show was videotaped and sections were published in Baby Snakes and other movie. Zappa on steriods, epic indeed, probably one of his best shows ever, and also arguable features his best guitar solo's. I you have not yet seen it by now, the one that gets me again and again, is this show's version of 'Black Napkins' the 5th and last encore (Muffin man being the 3rd). Brings tears to my eyes every time I see it. Not sure what he was on that night :-) (Frank did not do drugs!) but it's just mind-blowing. This song was only performed that night actually! I actually saw Frank in Rotterdam Netherlands 1984 (probably at that time at 16 years old the youngest in the audience) and a second time (also Rotterdam Ahoy) 1988 with his 'big band' (the one featured on Broadway the Hard Way, where Sting does his Murder by Numbers).

I was lucky enough to get Frank and John Smothers to sign my Absolutely Free album. In the song written about him, "Dong Work For Yuda" they make fun of his poor speech (the bodyguard was responsible for famous Smotherisms such as "Shaushage", "Salima", and "Falcum"). But they do close out the song with a compliment(?) John's got a sausage, yeah man John's got a sausage, yeah man John's got a sausage that will make you fart John's got a sausage that will break your heart Make you fart and break your heart And don't bend over if you are smart He took a little walk to the weenie stand John's got a sausage, yeah man A great big weenie in both his hands John's got a sausage, yeah man He sucked on the end 'til the mustard squirt He said, "Ya'll stand back cause you might get hurt"

Yeah on Adrian! You guys should check out a Cincinnati band called "The Bears" (formerly "Raisins") led by Adrian Belew. Thanks Steve!

@@jamdfig7878 All over that!, Agree, I am lucky enough to have seen the Raisins their whole career, my favorite can't miss Cincy band back in the day, Have their debut album on vinyl (produced by Adrian, of course). Fear Is Never Boring is a classic in my world. Thanks Jamdfig

@@steveschmitz2839 The Bears first two albums are great. I remember seeing the Raisins play at Shipley's in Clifton and at a place on W. McMillan St. (Wheels also played there a lot, help me out here Steve). I'm a bass player so I loved watching Bad Bob and the rest of the band was hilarious. Great bands, a friend of mine was part of the Bears road crew for a while. Nice memories.

@@jamdfig7878 Oh boy, I never remember the names of streets in Clifton, but could the club be Alexanders? I'm an old shitty drummer who loved Bam's playing (I only remember the band with Bam). Bad Bob is great, they all are!! I recall some years ago, smiling to myself each day on my way home when I turned the corner on Hollywood Ave and would see a house for sale with list agent Bob N.....I would think to myself, "I hope these folks know who he is". Great Band. Not super up on the Bears, except, I think, the late great Larry London was their early drummer?

Frank, seconds before a heavy duty guitar solo “hey don’t forget to run to pick up the roll of toilet paper and windmill it into the crowd!” Such an insane solo. Only to be matched by their encore Black Napkins. Steve Vai said he’d never seen FZ play the way he did that version of Black Napkins. Love your reactions and genuine appreciation of Frank the legend.

You should check out some of Zappa's instrumental stuff. I highly recommend "Waka/Jawaka" and "Big Swifty" - many more where those came from.

As far as guitar players go; there is Frank Zappa, then there is a large gap, then there is everybody else. Frank could play it all; rock, jazz, flamenco, blues, funk, folk. classical; the lot...and all in one track! That is what made him such a stand alone guitarist.
