Had to throw in my two bit's! This is a Fuckin Masterpiece! I am really willing to say the greatest guitar solo ever Played / Recorded / Heard in this or probably any other universe! Thank God that I am alive at this time to be able to experience this! Thank you Frank and all the others involved for all the unbelievable music I have been lucky enough to have experienced!

Never played it quite the same twice but of course that was his intent. Every one a gem though.

I love when he goes off-tone, around 7:10 ... and then lands on the theme riff. pure real rock n roll. he took off from what many other musicians already did, like Chuck Berry, Hendrix, Jimmy Page, and really escalated to a more classical deep level. been a fan of Zappa for many years now. It never tires me.

I miss Him so much. What would Frank do now in this day and age? What music he would make.

Ben Watson called this piece "an objective event", a cosmic event equivalent to the explosion of a white star. Ed Mann said he worked 4 months in the studio of the pieces connecting the 3 different solos. I'd say that architecturally, this composition is on a par with Segrada Familia. Thanx for the post.

Have you noticed that at 7:30 Frank creates the "You Are What You Is" riff and starts jamming over it?

I am not from Managua but not too seldom I miss my mama.. Maybe I should have stayed with her longer than I used to... Still I love this song... and Frank's unedited guitar solo is much more exciting than the one in the SHEIK YERBOUTI album.

This wasn't the actual track on Sheik Yerbouti, on the album the solo was from Hemmerleinhalle, Neunkirchen am Brand, Germany, February 25th, 1978, also the vocal and parts of the backing tracks were from Hammersmith, January 27th, 1978. Frank and his trademark use of xenochrony at their very best.. This particular solo from Berlin is a personal favourite of mine :)

tomtiddler1 Mine too! The Rotterdam version is pretty hot too! In fact this whole tour was pretty amazing. I caught it at Hammersmith in London. It was the night he came on and said he wanted to get some things on tape that he and the band had been working on. This would take about 45mins, after which "there will be a short break of 15 minutes then we'll come back on and do the complete show we were gonna do in the first place. So if you wanna go to the bar. Now would be a good time!' No one moved. The next 45mins seemed like 15 and was some pretty spellbinding stuff. I was stunned.

+tomtiddler1 Any solo Frank played between 78 and 81 during "Yo Mama" rank as his strongest of all, IMO, but the greatest single guitar solo I ever heard played was a double solo between Frank and his Italian Virtuoso, Steve Vai at a performance of Yo Mama at the Palladium in NYC in 1979 or 80. I was sitting in the 4th row and this lengthy solo closed the show. It was the usual format of the slow drumless intro to the solo, then the build with drums, but after a phenomenal climax to his individual soloing, Steve Vai joined in and together they wailed and harmonized for another 4 minutes or so. I have never heard a recording of it, but I would know it if I heard it. If anyone has a recording of that night, PLEEEEESE post. The show ended with that song. Mesmerized and euphoric, I sat in my seat as the place emptied. I asked people around me if they thought that was the greatest guitar solo they ever heard and everyone agreed, it was a very special moment. I remember thinking, "If I live to be 400 years old, I will never hear a guitar solo as good as that ever again." and 35 years later, I have never heard anything even close.
