@@RobsAquaponics Yeah I fianaly see some activity, some seeds have finally germinated. Now those growbeds look a bit less desolate. The daytime is a little warmer, around 21 Celsius since the last few days, with many hours of sun. The nights are still far below average for the time of the year, with waves of cold northern wind. For the entire month of May the historical average is 12,3 Celsius at night, and right now we have nights that are around 6C. It is slowly going up in temperature, but the forecasts show another wave of cold nights at the end of the next week. Wich is highly unusual and it does slow the growth and the entire system down, I can really notice it. But the strawberries are doing overwhelmingly great despite the cold nights, as well as the yellow iris that grows in my system. I am completely flabbergasted. I have never seen that many strawberries and iris flowers grow in my system. A friend of mine has a strawberry plant in the soil. It only has a handful of fruits hanging, but roughly counted I have around 75 up to a 100 strawberries growing at every plant. And they still keep coming. I just need to be careful with giving food to the fish. Last week I had one fish floating on its side. And it wasn't responding to my hands. Lucky enough it started swimming again, and now it seems to be doing fine. Which is a first for me because in the past I always lost the floating fish. I stopped giving food for a few days and that seemed to have helped. So I think that I gave too much food too fast and that the water is still a bit too cold. The fish seemed to have a bit swollen scales. So that is a bit of a balancing act. The plants want to grow, because it is that time of the year. But I can't introduce too much food to the system yet due to the unusual relative cold nights. So it is going slow, and with unusual waves of cold nights, but other then that it looks as if it is going to be a very special year for me. Just keep in mind that I am not necessarily aiming for the most food production. For me this is all about curiosity. And the joy of having a small pond with decorative fish. And the joy of doing some modest experiments with a flood and drain system. And the joy of learning about the biological system and trying to perfect the system with the knowledge that I have learned so far. I like to make my system work with high quality and I most certainly I like to tinker with small details. And I simply enjoy watching and observing the system and the animals that visit my system. I am also very much interested in the principles of permaculture and regenerative farming. I am a huge fan of Geoff Lawton and others who are doing similar things when it comes to growing food. Already around 235 million people are suffering from food shortages. That is something that concerns me. I have a bit of hope that the shared knowledge on social media about growing food and regenerative farming can do something about that. So you are doing a fantastic job with spreading the word, and I can only love and admire that 👍

Enjoying the Frankenstein setup so far! You'll have plenty of air in that little DWC bed with those 3 nozzles. Looking forward to seeing some nice white roots!!

Thank you so much for sharing all you do. I am also working on my own frankin system. My system is in my garage and I’m going to plumb a NFT wall outside though the window.

Nice one Shane. Are you keeping the fish inside due to your climate? Hope the build goes smoothly.

I live in southern Ontario Canada. I want to be able to shrink system in the winter and grow it in the summer.

rob if you get some plastic uv rated . cut a circle and drill holes in it then silicon the back of it and screw it to the flank of that ibc it will hold water my guess. i highly recommend a 3d printer. only if you have patience though lol.

Cheers mate. The whole fitting is cracked back to where it joins the tank so I'd need to remove the whole thing. More trouble than it's worth I think. hope all's well with you.

Hey Rob, how come your not using the cone bottom tank you were gifted a while ago ? It’s killing me to see how you use it. Thanks again for your videos mate.

It's far too tall for this build Mark. From memory, it's about 150mm/5" taller than the fish tank which means I'd have to dig out a hole for the base & the pump to drain the solids from it. That whole area has roots from the tree next door as well which is a bit of a pain in the rear. It will be used in a future build that involves a sand bed as I want to set it up like Owen has his in a foder system I'd like to build to feed farm animals. Cheers mate.

Is there any way to mount those grow rails on the backside of the tub, maybe stack one above the other? They just seem to be in the way, unless you mount them on your fence there.
@RobsAquaponics Жыл бұрын
The fence is about to fall over so I don't really want to build too close to it. We'll need a bit of space to get in there & replace it when the time comes. Cheers Gayle.

Will you be moving to aeroponics in future? As they seem space efficient

Not really. The water requires better filtration as the fine fish solids can cause blocking issues I've been told by folks that tried it.
@darrenkite8184 Жыл бұрын
Great video as always rob , good design too .. I’ve got a question, my Aquaponic system does have a fine filter for the solids but does catch solids . What’s your thoughts on a store built filter for the fine waste.. I have a duel loop system , 1 pump is for the veg system. This filter would be between pump and veg to stop waste build up in NFT and other places . Then I have a pump that circulates the water though the fish tank side . This help me control heat on summer and cold in winter.. is there anyway we could talk ? I’m more old school with only Facebook or phone or text .. cheers

Hey Darren. I'm not really a fan of Facebook anymore & I've had a few bad experiences with giving out my number as well (midnight calls aren't fun). I prefer to chat under the videos mate here on KZbin if you have a quick question. I do have a supporters page on Facebook for folks that support us through the KZbin members program or my Farm Your Own Yard page if that interests you (links below). I'm more that happy to help those that help out with a few bob to buy a coffee. I also do consultations if you're wanting a bit more help with system design of large issues with your system. Hope you understand, Cheers. www.youtube.com/@RobsAquaponics/membership Farm Your Own Yard & Consultations, www.robsaquaponics.info/

Hi Rob Instead of a radial flow filter could you build the filter you showed 6 months or so ago. It was a review of somebody else’s system and they had different grades of material that the water came up through and needed cleaning out about every six months?
@RobsAquaponics Жыл бұрын
I've decided not to for this system as I want this to be a simple build component wise. Will definitely be including one in future builds though.

I was wondering about what you do for evaporation. Do you have an auto top off in place or do you add water every day or so
@RobsAquaponics Жыл бұрын
I generally top up once a week here through summer. Most of the water is use by the plants as I understand it.

you would think getting air to roots would be a bad thing.
@RobsAquaponics Жыл бұрын
Plants in the soil also require air. 👍That's why you hear some folks say particular plants "don't like wet roots". It's actually more accurate to say that they require a fair amount of oxygen. Cheers mate.
