Many folks will have them in a system but get the majority of the nutrients for the plants from fish. The stocking rates are the issue as the crayfish can be territorial & eat each other.

Good day my Aussie mentor. Our bass are doing great thanks to your course. Wondering what the lowest temperatures you experience are. I’m in northern utah where most of our winter is spent around freezing. The bass should be fine if I keep the water liquid but am wondering about heating and my bio reactor
@RobsAquaponics
@RobsAquaponics Жыл бұрын
The lowest water temp we have had is about 10°C / 50°F. I didn't lose any of the perch as it was a slow drop & not sudden. Normally they start to die off at about 14°C / 57.2°F from what others have told me. I try to keep the water temp 18°C + / 64.4°F+ using aquarium heaters. Just enough to keep them comfortable.

Hi Rob! Thank you so much for your dedication to this craft! I have finally put a system together and I have one question for you. If I have two tanks, is it possible to T their stand pipes together so that they share the same filtration system and then T off the pump to keep water swirling in both tanks? I used a pair of IBC’s.

Keeping the system in the shade during the heat of the day will help a lot Kenneth. 👍 We have weeks up in that temperature range & find that if I can keep exposed media shaded with plants it stops it from warming up & in turn the water as well. I hope that helps some mate & hope the build goes smoothly when the time comes.

I am not sure what KZbin channel I seen it but when they were getting the chop and flip IBC ready, they painted the outside surface to halt the light shining through the sides and deture algae growth. May be something to think about. Sorry it's morning here and I'm still very sleepy lol I am currently looking to do a small project. I picked up a hanging bird bath and thought it would be good for a few small plants to deture bugs congregating. Flys, bees, gnats. Do you have any suggestion for small herb garden plants from your area? I'm in the northern USA so what I've looked at so far is diffrent mints, lemon balm, basil, and a couple others. Looking for things that work in about 2 inch of soil. I was thinking of drilling a hole in the bottom and adding a 1 inch tall pvc pipe silicone to the inside. Use gravel or something around it. Some shade cloth or window screen over the top of that. Thin layer of sand and a good miracle grow soil on top. Where it would hang there is dew that drips off the slanted roof to keep it topped off. But it would be back far enough so when it rains the water Flys past it. Then it will come inside to the kitchen window over winter. Goal is mostly to keep away bugs by the front door 😅

There's not any local plants I can think of sorry. I know that East Indian lemongrass is used by some due to its citronella content. It can get away from you & become a bit of a monster & has deep roots. Sorry I'm not much of a help HCO.

I know nothing about these systems and they do interest me, but is there a way to have a larger environment for the fish? Or is that prohibitive in some way?
@RobsAquaponics
@RobsAquaponics Жыл бұрын
You can have a larger tank if you want. There is a point though that if you have two large volume of water and not enough fish the the nutrient level in the water will be very low and wouldn't be able to sustain a lot of plants.

Living in east TN, I'm wondering if it would be best to start a project like this in the back yard, or an extra building that I can keep the temperature above freezing or warmer if needed. Thank you. Jerry
@RobsAquaponics
@RobsAquaponics Жыл бұрын
Hi Jerry. I know folks that have a fish room in their basement or shed and then plumb the water out into a grow area. Come winter they drain the beds and turn off the plumbing to the plant side of the system and grow a couple of plants under lights inside where the temperature is warmer. The other option is to shut the whole system down through winter and then started up again in Spring with a fast growing fish species. Hope that helps some mate and have a top one. 👍

Hi, I'm a complete newbie and have yet to set up a system. This may be a silly question, but is it sensible to have the solids settler function as a mineralization tank too? That way there is no need to clean out the solids and there is one less tank to maintain?
@RobsAquaponics
@RobsAquaponics Жыл бұрын
I have seen some folks attempt that but they had issues with the solids floating & move through the system. I was pumping out to a basic mineralisation drum on the side before I moved the system. I run through it at the start of this video kzbin.info/www/bejne/r2imhpl_e6t6g5I

@RobsAquaponics
@RobsAquaponics Жыл бұрын
You could have a few issues with the Organics rich water helping to break down the coco after a while. I'd probably start off with a small trial bed and see how that goes but I'm guessing it would need cleaning out regularly with new coco being added in. On the plus side, any spent Coco would help kick-start a compost pile or could be used as a mulch top dress to feed veggie plants in the soil.

@RobsAquaponics
@RobsAquaponics Жыл бұрын
There's no larvae in the sump that I can see. Mosquitoes don't like moving water so they're not an issue. We may get midgefly larvae also known as blood worms but they are also a source of food for the fish.

I expect to be moving my indoor system to a bigger area. Currently entire area is an 8x8 ft. (~2.5 m x 2.5 m) Two aquariums, one 55 gal (210 l) connected with a 75 gal.(285 l). A sump tank and the grow area all inclusive. The new area will have a 10x20 ft ( 3x6 m)😢grow area with a separate area for a 300-500 gal indoor pond. Are there veggies that can grow in the fishes's pond?
@RobsAquaponics
@RobsAquaponics Жыл бұрын
Hi there. You may be able to set up bog-like beds on the side, meaning that the media is submerged in the water all the time, to grow plants like taro or maybe water chestnuts. Growing plants directly in the water, say on a raft, can be an issue with some fish as they will feed on the roots. Hope that helps some.

I have been fascinated with aquaponics for years but never had anywhere to try building a system, recently an older gentleman I know offered to let me build a weekend getaway on his property out of town. I would like to have a garden to grow my own food & would really like to try aquaponics but was concerned that being in town for work during most of the week is it possible to build a self sustaining system? Any information would be greatly appreciated, thanks heaps!
@RobsAquaponics
@RobsAquaponics Жыл бұрын
I think any aquaponic system really does need to be checked regularly, at least every two or three days. While the fish can be fed with automatic feeders it's the small things that can get out of control really quickly like pests on the plants or some sort of failure with the plumbing that can put the whole system in jeopardy. Could you start off with a small system where you're living at the moment?
