Nick was poor before the podcast took off. He was living on like $15,000 per year from writing satirical columns as Nicole Mullen. This sort of rental situation was how he could afford to live in central NYC. He started comedy way back in 2005 so that was a good more than a decade of struggle life. It's kinda inspiring how he persevered and eventually found a big success.
