Maude was doing what's called a transatlantic accent. It's that old school theater accent that upper class americans adopted to sound sophisticated and different. A blend of british and american pronunciation. Think Audrey Hepburn, old timey radio guy voice.

This is one of the those movies that is so quotable and is a gem because of the dialogue, kinda like Pulp Fiction. The similar vibe between the two movies comes from the unique conversations and personalities. Gotta love the acting from the main cast as well. I love how John Goodman can play this type of role and also be awesome as Sully in Monsters Inc and Pacha in Emperors New Groove.

So many amazing performances! For some reason, Phillip Seymour Hoffman in particular really makes me laugh. Fun fact, John Goodman said in an interview that (even though this isn't seen in the film) Walter took a serious injury trying to protect Donnie during the fight in the parking lot because he secretly genuinely loved him like a little brother. That's very sweet.

Pretty close. Each character is a stand-in for their own film world/genre, which often includes a hyperreal slapstick version of an ideology. The humor is not in the ideologies colliding, because that happens in real life often enough. The humor is in the whole constructed artifice of a film world carried by one character colliding with another whole constructed artifice of a film world carried by another character, and so on as the plot gets complexity. None of them belong together in the same overall film. It's a bunch of meta what-ifs.

How about Donny
@LordVolkov
@LordVolkov 7 ай бұрын
"Hey they did get In-N-Out 🍔!" It is good that Donny got to have a burger (though probably not great for his heart 😭). Steve Buscemi is so funny as meek, mild mannered Donny, being constantly silenced by John Goodman. His little interjections always make me smile - "What do you need that for Dude?" I don't like seeing him go, but it adds to the dark comedy when his ashes blow back in The Dude's face 😑 Buscemi worked with the Coens previously on Fargo, and when you watch it you will understand why he doesn't get to talk here 😉

The comparison to PULP FICTION isn't a bad idea. But the strongest echoes are of FARGO: Both films have a million-dollar ransom for a wife. In both films, Steve Buscemi says, “in and out.” Peter Stormare wants pancakes in both films. The Dude is eager to give 4 dollars because Carl is reluctant to give 4 dollars. In Malibu, The Dude gets the Shep Proudfoot treatment (beaten on the floor). Bunny Lebowski is originally from Moorhead, Minnesota, the city next to . . . Fargo. Also, 69 cents is the amount Anton will pay in NO COUNTRY FOR OLD MEN.

Definitely explore the work of the Coen bros. Some of the best in the biz right now, especially in subversive, dark, or absurdist comedy. In addition to their directorial efforts, don't skip on their writing. Try Suburbicon (with Matt Damon and Julianne Moore), written by the Coens and directed by George Clooney (whom the Coens direct in Hail Ceasar, Burn After Reading, Intolerable Cruelty, and O Brother Where Art Thou)

I was actually one of the few exceptions when this film came out. Since the Coens had won me over with Raising Arizona ten years before, I made sure to go see this on opening weekend. It was practically an empty theater, but I was in total awe at how much they ratcheted up their absurdist cinema with masterful filmmaking. Nothing like it, not even Tarantino. I remember thinking I would have to see it some more times to wrap my head around the chaotic scribble of a plotline, but so much of the humor was so freaking masterful I knew it would be a classic (for me at least). I felt it was going to flop and be forgotten since it was nothing like their big hit Fargo. They had gags but way less than the Farley Bros. They shifted most of the humor to another realm, like playing with film genres and cinematic tropes, and then layering those artificial worlds on to modern real world but still absurd ideologies. Genius experiment that became a cult classic after all. But its cult classic status is mostly about the quotes, not the depth of experimental humor I think.

The Tragedy of Macbeth (2021), directed by Joel Coen and starring Denzel Washington and Frances McDormand, is extremely good. I very highly recommend it. And sometimes Shakespearean language is hard for me, I get bogged down trying to understand it and then fall behind and understand very little. It helps me a lot to use the subtitles. Reading and hearing the dialog at the same time makes it much, much easier.

The reason Walter treats Donny so poorly is the ingenious way the characters are written. The Dude is pretty mellow, but Walter can get really worked up… and that’s where Donny comes in: Donny doesn’t say a single thing that moves the story forward. Instead, every single one of his lines confuses and/or derails the conversation. Which winds Walter up and confuses the Dude.

Philip Seymour Hoffman is absolutely my favorite part of this movie. So funny. I've tried to warm up to Walter, though, and just can't. I know people think he's funny, but I just kinda hate him. He comes very close to ruining the movie for me. *Burn After Reading* is the funniest Coen brothers movie, imo. I also really love *Intolerable Cruelty* and *Hail, Caesar!,* which is very underrated. Also, I recently found this out: 18 U.S. Code § 336 - Issuance of circulating obligations of less than $1 - Whoever makes, issues, circulates, or pays out any note, check, memorandum, token, or other obligation for a less sum than $1, intended to circulate as money or to be received or used in lieu of lawful money of the United States, shall be fined under this title or imprisoned not more than six months, or both. And now I'm going to think of this every time I see The Dude writing that check for $.69. Lol

Fun Fact: John Goodman's character of Walter looks, sounds, and acts quite a lot like writer/director John Milius. His work includes "Apocalypse Now" as well as "Red Dawn" (1984). But it is also clearly a caricature drawn with good faith. And RE: "You know this guy believes all the Conspiracy Theories..." ; Perhaps! And does it make him any more unhinged or dangerous? He might even be right about Why, in some really random way.

It (even as a reaction video) really detracts from enjoying the flow of the narrative. Just cut after the lines/scenes that you see as valuable are complete...the mid sentence cuts are not working.
