On the subject of great dialogue in film, a fun fact about this movie is that the scene where Lecter mock's Clarice's accent was improvised and her reaction is somewhat real. There's a video where Jodi Foster talks about how she trained to be able to perform a West Virginia accent and when he mocked her she was genuinely surprised and angry and channeled that into the scene. Such incredible acting throughout this film for them both!
@KateBoyle-vf1ep16 күн бұрын
The book by Thomas Harris is awesome and of course gives much more detail about the characters. One particular thing you learn is that Clarice is a proficient markswoman and easily recognized the sound of the hammer being cocked and reacted instantaneously, Bill didn't stand a chance. She definitely outsmarted him..

I am so happy you didn't stop watching at the end. So many reactors miss that Dr Chilton was his "old friend". Your laugh was contagious and what everyone in the theater was doing back in the day. Seeing that in a theater, you could feel the tension in everyone around you! It was like being on a really long rollercoaster. At the end, that funny moment was like a tea pot whistle finally letting some of the steam off. A relief really. This movie will always be good, no matter how many years go by. Dolores Claiborne is Kathy Bates best performance. Stephen King wrote the book after watching Kathy in Misery. He wrote that book specifically with her in mind, and later she took that role and made it her own. You mentioned you loved a story with great dialogue and will have you in awe of just the acting. Dolores Claiborne is that film. It’s old school cinema. Chefs kiss with god tier level acting from Kathy and Jennifer Jason Leigh. The subject matter is dark. It’s mature. It’s Stephen King. You have to remember that this movie was set around 1990, 35 years ago. Seeing a young woman as a field agent at the FBI back then was incredibly rare. When all these small town cops see her, it's like seeing a unicorn. Maybe some of it is misogyny, but most of it is just the fact that it is just unfamiliar territory.
@Dylan_Platt17 күн бұрын
I agree... but that's still misogyny, though. Women were rare in the field due to institutional misogyny, which was heavily based in cultural misogyny.

This is one of my all-time favorite movies. Jodie Foster said Anthony Hopkins freaked her out during their first read-through together of the script, so she avoided him during the rest of the shoot because she was genuinely scared of him. On the last day of filming together, he sought her out and had a chat with her, and then she wasn't afraid of him any more, and they're still friends to this day. So her fear reactions to him in these scenes are real. X)

Notice how all the men (including the good guys) Clarice interacts with, look directly into the camera straight into the audience eyes. Buffalo Bill is based on Ed Gein* because of the... "clothing" he would make. He also made it to be a woman, but he wanted to be his mother. He was way worse (as far as beliefs) than Buffalo Bill. *I forgot to mention that Jerry Brudos was also a big part of it, explained below. Hannibal is also based on someone, but not the crimes. The writer went to a prison, and was met by the prison doctor. He had a very interesting convo with him, and he was surprised he had a nice watch on, had a lot of insight into the psych issues of the patients, and that he was charming. Then the warden came out, and it turned out that he had been talking to an inmate this whole time. An inmate they let be a doctor in the prison. That became the base for Lecter.
@norwegianblue201717 күн бұрын
The scene where the killer lures the girl to his van by feigning injury is straight out of Ted Bundy's play book.
@darkermatter125.3517 күн бұрын
@norwegianblue2017 oh 100%. But the overall is Gein. Like Hannibal's eating habits are reminiscent of many. Some more than others. But he is specifically based on that person the writer met in prison in South or Central America.
@iesika738717 күн бұрын
Ed Gein is also the inspiration behind Psycho
@darkermatter125.3514 күн бұрын
@@norwegianblue2017 my bad, I did forget that Jerry Brudos was also part of the inspiration for buffalo bill. Gonna edit. I think because the background and interest in actual clothing, as well as a few other psychological markers lined up with the background. For example, he also had... dreams and aspirations of having a similar captive situation to Buffalo Bill, as well as a peeping habits. But the more extreme creations that Buffalo Bill made were right out of Ed Gein's handbook. But Gein did it not to really look like any woman, that was more of the crossdressing habits of Brudos, and he had some displays. Gein had a VERY unhealthy obsession with his mother, so when he lost her, he did Buffalo Bill activities (unbelievably similar, down to the wigs and dancing in his new... "outfit") to essentially live as his mother, to keep her alive. BUT, he also had an obsession with a certain tine period of Germany. So he recreated a LOT of what some of the worst of those people created, using what he stole from others. It was truly vile. I am trying to work around what is allowed on here, but it will probably take a few tries. Brudos also did lure into cars, but he used some different tactics. While B. Bill picked people off of shape/size/...softness?, Brudos mostly picked off of shoes and and how women looked in them. So a lot of underlying psychologically and desires was Brudos, but methods and the evil was Gein, if that makes sense? The terror was from one, but Brudos was a mess, tbh. He also had a family, he was often scattered and a bit pathetic. If it was not for his size, he probably would not have been so successful. Not to mention how little they had in forensics back then. Gein was horrifying, but he ALSO was not someone who could blend in. While Brudos could maintain a family life, Gein removed family stumbling blocks with no remorse. He was also gross. He fit in with some parts of the community, oddly enough. But nowhere near the kind of invisibility that Brudos had. Probably because of the difference in how shame from their childhoods became a factor later on.

One of my favorite movies, almost perfect. Clarice Starling is one of my favorite fictional characters. They do such a good job overlaying her beauty and capability over this world that is so male-dominated. Anthony Hopkins won the Oscar for Best Actor on barely 16 minutes of screentime, too. The book is also incredible if you enjoy a good read.

@bwilliams46313 күн бұрын
The key to understanding Lecter - which Starling figured out early on - is his ego. The man needs to prove that he's smarter than everybody else, and that's why she was able to manipulate him into helping her find Bill. And Lecter didn't manipulate HER into setting up his escape; he manipulated Chilton into doing that.
@SleepingDiamonds10 күн бұрын
As terrifying Lecter is, the last scene is so fucking good. "Having an old friend for dinner" feels so fucking good, because Chilton is responsible for Hannibal being on the run - but I think to Hannibal its not just the fact that Chilton was mean to him, I believe he also did it because Chilton was so disrespectful to Clarice. And for us it feels good, because Chilton also showed Hannibal that Clarice gave him a fake offer - and put Clarice in harms way, since it pissed of Hannibal. So we all laugh when Chilton gets whats coming to him.

Manhunter is definitely worth the watch to see a different portrayal of Hannibal- Anthony Hopkins really brings him to life but Brian Cox is an amazing actor and his Hannibal is interesting in how it deviates/is the same as Hopkins. Red Dragon is a genuinely good movie that expands on the character. Hannibal is generally looked down on but it’s my favorite of the books after Silence of the Lambs, so I have a soft spot for it even though it’s very different. Hannibal Rising is only necessary for completionists lol it’s…. Fine, I guess. Gaspard is great but otherwise meh. Ardelia really gets the short stick in the movies but she’s such a good character, such a solid friend to clarice in the books. A lot of Clarice’s story is about the boys club that is law enforcement, and the inherent misogyny she’s dealing with, but ardelia is doing all that and she’s a black woman- I wish Thomas Harris would retire clarice and Hannibal’s story and give me more Delia
