I remember this, and it was awesome! There was controversy at the time, because up to that point, Montreux had been a ***live*** music extravaganza (I have the DVD of Mike Oldfield's 1979 concert, and it's also awesome)., but that year, they went to playback for purposes of TV - specifically MTV. One could only imagine the "anti-yankee-TV" sentiment felt there, until Frankie expressed it by smashing their s*** before the tape ended. :-D
@TiefTonMusik3 жыл бұрын
Thats not the reason they did it though. They wanted to top the performance of the other acts. It’s music, afterall, and not a politics meeting😉

At first it's live but from 1'31", we switch to semi playback with just the voice of the singer live then full playback from 1'49". I know these songs by heart and from 1'49", there is no difference with the studio version, something impossible to do in public. During Wariiors of the wasteland, Holly sings a little live at certain times.

It was complete playback indeed and as a band they did not quite like the fact that it was imposed. That is why they deliberately show it is a fake gig and are going wild at the end destroying their instruments and setup to show that they were useless for this theatrics.

where are keyboard sounds?
@pip44574 жыл бұрын
They were miming to the tracks. No need for a session keyboard player - especially since they wanted to show their disgust at having to mime in what had hitherto been a live show, by trashing their gear before the tape finished. Classic Frankie attitude and, as miming goes, you won’t find a better front man than Holly Johnson.
@TiefTonMusik3 жыл бұрын
Trashing the gear before out of disgust of having to mime, is not the reason they did it. It was decided between them after seeing the other acts and they thought, :“How can we top them?“. Thats the reason why. Not the Miming. A fun fact might be that, the Bass Mark shredded was a Levinson Bass that he was asked to use by Gary Levinson backstage just before the show. And when they got off, Levinson shouted at Mark : „You f#%king A-hole, thats a $1500 Bass, I‘ll sue you, you Motherf#% ker“. Read Brian Nashs Book, thats where I got the story from. It’s a cool book to read and the reason I just watched this to see what went down.
