Of all Frankie's in front of audience appearances, this that he did towards last years of his life in front of Oxford Union for me is most cherished and just pulls at the heartstrings so much. Cause he is the epitome of a professional comedian class act but in front of a young audience who are interacting with him literally loving the whole routine but beyond that, him as a person. To see the happy faces and smiles in that young crowd that this event was back then adoring him is such a wonderful thing and the volume of cheers when he throws in his famed catchphrases. There is nothing forced from that crowd it is sheer appreciation for a comedian by then been in showbusiness for many decades and he so deserved that love from the Oxford Union. I wish they would repeat this on TV, l literally don't think it has been since.

Barry Cryer said ..’Wherever Frankie Howerd played, there were bums on seats and that was the safest place for them’ Not unkind because Howerd played up his dampness, it was a huge part of his brilliant act and very endearing. A fabulous comic.

Yes, the audience would have been about my age, as I was twenty then. Chances are, they are now around the fifty mark (I am now aged 52!)

The greatest stand up in the English language of all time. He absolutely brought the house down at the Oxford Union. Compare any of the others, any of them and you will see that they didn't get that reaction. RIP Sir Francis of Howerd. We are still laughing after all these years.

I do not wish to upset or belittle anyone but the days of the true naturally funny human has lone gone today as for as im concerned. frankie howard, tommy cooper, benny hill amongst them never realised how they effected peoples lives with their humour and warmth. they were always nervous before a performance in case the public found them unfunny...they could never except any comments about how brilliant they were because they never saw it in themselves....how wrong could they be. my sense of humour must have died because most of todays stand ups and the like try to be funny which just does not work.....they are not funny....they do not make me laugh and to be blunt i find most of them to be embarrising.none of them have a funny bone in their body unlike the pros who we have now sadly lost to never ever be replaced. frankie you will never be replaced.....impossible.....you are sadly missed.

I don’t know if this is true, but the guy who said “hear hear” is, in fact, his partner and business manager Dennis Haymer. The well-timed heckle was, I have heard, part of the act.

Incredible how Frankie Howerd became Britain’s first great radio comedian in the immediate post-war years before anyone had a TV and here he is over 40 years later playing live stand up to students. He never went out of fashion.

Awwww, at the start, even though hes doing it in joke form, you can tell he doesn't want them to linch him for doing old jokes :( You can tell how nervous he poor guy! :( Absolute Legend in the comedy game. It angers how they are more interesting in talking about his 'flaws' now days rather than his comedy legacy. Same with Tony Hancock, Sid james and Benny hill. Their flaws are nothing compared to celebs (and royals) now -_- We all have flaws even the ones who make those damned documentary's.

He went to the states to try his hand on broadway and flopped tremendously. The American audience and critics just didn’t get him, sadly. He had a close brush with Hollywood in the Sgt Pepper movie as Mr Mustard and failed, although that was mainly because the film was awful, with or without Frankie. But he really was fantastic.
