Old Frankie was one of the golden generation of comedians, the likes of Tommy Cooper, Lez Dawson, Spike Milligan, Dick Emery and countless more...all gone now but they've left us some great memories!

Frankie had that indefinable quality known as charisma that could naturally engage an audience. Not many around today.

The greatest standup in the English language. Funny after all these years. RIP Frankie Howerd. Unforgettable. Irreplaceable....

I agree - there was nobody like him - warm, friendly, innocently naughty, an uncle that you wished you had as a child - his timing was outstanding - only Frankie could do Franke material - the sign of a one-off- as you stated irreplaceable - his place is among the greats, Hancock, Dave Allen, Milligan, and Peter Cook

Isn’t it sad how many quality comedians are no longer with us: Frankie, Kenneth Williams, Tony Hancock, Morecambe and Wise .....

But their careers started in the '50s or before. You can't expect them to be here 70 years later.

When he first appeared on tv , he had a woman sitting at a piano whom he called Gladys . I don’t remember her playing , but he used to call out to her “all right dear “ and then make one of his faces and say “funny woman”. He gradually developed his oohs and aahs and knowing looks as he gained experience. He used to walk along deserted beaches rehearsing all those noises.

One of the best stories came from Barry Cryer, who asked Frankie for a favour, would he do a ten minutes performance at his sons Schools prize days. Queue Frankie going off on one, not losing his temper but, owhhh no, no, what,, he finally agreed to do it, under protest,,, the day came, and that ten minutes turned into 45 minutes ful on performance

Such a shame that the late great Frankie Howerd wasn't in the later Carry On Films. Carry Ons Behind, England & Emmanuelle would have been massively enhanced with this great comic actor dynamic presence. Windsor Davies could have been in Carry On Emmanuelle. Had these three done better we could have had Carry On Again Nurse made in 1979. Frankie was an iconic comic actor & raconteur who positively shone in all that he did. RIP legend.

I don't know if this was the Wogann interview that in a very unusual move after the credits rolled it cut back to the studio and Terry Wogan was thanking Frankie off set for a great interview and Frankie says nice things back and then as he's walking away he sees the camera on him, he throws his eyes re Terry and says "Silly old fool!". It was obviously done deliberately but the Wogan chat show was on for years and they never did anything like it again, but it was obviously done for Frankie's comedy act.

Very talented comedian, but he should have set the hairpiece free in the wild to mate with its own kind. He was a handsome gent and would have looked distinguished without it!

Let’s bring about the end of all these interview programmes. Everyone knows they’re phoney and it’s just endlessly embarrassing as the participants struggle desperately to find something interesting to say. Like vicars at the rectory tea party So instead just stick up a screenshot of the book or record or whatever it is the interview is intended to promote (and on the BBC, too) And leave it up till it’s time for the next programme
