My father did not live to see the day, but a century after his mother (for inscrutable reasons) ran off with and created a new identity for him, I identified his father. His father's family had been searching for my father for about 30 years, with no luck. Each of us knew different parts of particular stories, and certain unusual shared physical characteristics seemed even more striking than the DNA test results. Suddenly I had a huge increase in the size of my family, and they were by and large a good lot.

Wonderful! My uncle and I tested our DNA at three different companies in 2019 to try to find out who my grandfather's (my uncle's dad's) parents were. Family lore told us he and his brother were left on a stranger's doorstep because the parents were too poor to raise him. My uncle died in June of 2022 and just thirteen days later, I finally found out who these two people were. I'm sorry my father and uncle died before I figured it out, but I like to think they're aware. Since then, I've made contact with my grandfather's half sister's descendants and my heart is full! DNA analysis can stitch broken families back together.

I did my DNA and found a skeleton in the closet. My sister and I couldn’t figure out why there were no maternal maiden names in our ancestry. Long story short, our maternal grandmother had an affair which produced our mother. The grandfather we loved isn’t really our grandpa. Grandma died in the 1940’s of TB at the time, so all this mystery died with her.
@sydneywood4398Ай бұрын
I don't know which DNA company you used, but it might be good to use both 23 and ancestry. You should be able to see relatives of the man who fathered your mother, did you? I had a similar experience and there were several names that popped up on 23 I had never heard of and I was very familiar with all the names in the family. I quickly built a family tree for them. These mystery people share the same amount of DNA that my mother's cousin's children shared with me, which was generally around 4%. These cousins are also half a generation older than I am. It came down to the two grandfathers of one of the men on 23. I did research on both of them. One lived a very straight arrow life; the other was highly successful. When I took the DNA test on ancestry, more cousins showed up confirming that it was the successful Grandpa. And because he was successful, there were several articles written about him with photos. The photo used in In one of his obituaries was a dead ringer for my father at the same age. I also asked my brother to take both tests because his YDNA should be the same as any of the men descendants of the new grandfather. That would be helpful if the one son I haven't found any information on had sons who had grandsons. But I haven't found that one son or any information on his descendants. I have that this might be helpful to you and identifying the father of your mother.

@@sydneywood4398 Hi, thank you for your reply. My sister and I used Ancestry. We both have the same "new cousins" on each of ours and reached out to several. Only one responded back. She was just as shocked as we were, but doesn't seem to want to continue with it. (Grandma's affair was in 1925 (Mom was born in 1926) ) We asked for any pictures, if she knew anything about his health. Nothing in return :( I need some type of closure because this really threw me for a loop to the point I was sorry we did our DNA. I'm 67 and glad my mom never found out, she loved her "pa" so much and would have been devastated. (We don't know if he knew about this.) Our beloved aunt (moms sister) recently passed away at the age of 98, she took her DNA for us so we could get more answers. It was hard seeing her as a "half-aunt" on ancestry. She had no idea about any of this either and was equally surprised. Not much we can do about any of this. I would however like to see what he looked like at least or even his first name.

@@UToobUzerur gpa was ur gpa, period. He loved u and u loved him and that’s what makes a relationship, not anything else. U should love ur aunt just as deeply too, we are not physical beings but spirit and soul that dwell in a body. If she had married a new man, say 3 yrs after having ur mom, u would have loved him instead as ur gpa as ur mom would have loved him as her dad. And he would have loved u too. A new sister w/him would have been ur half aunt still but would have loved u to bits too. Don’t destroy ur family. (I’m not condoning illicit behavior, that’s completely different)

Wow! Nine months before the wedding or 9 months after? If 9 months after, maybe he had too much fun at his bachelor party! That would also explain why the mom didn't know who the father was. But at least you got a sister out of the deal.

Back when Franklin was conceived, the urge was still there, but there weren't many forms of birth control around. My own maternal grandmother was sent to Ireland from Philadelphia, PA, to give birth to a baby she, as far as we know, never seen again. This was in the 1920s. You take care 🙂
