This video looks at the reactions of copper (II) sulfate with a strong base (sodium hydroxide) and a weak base (ammonia). Its reaction with the strong base is irreversible and is known as deprotonation. dihydroxotetraaquacooper (II) is formed (i.e copper (II) hydroxide). The reaction with the weak base (ammonia) has 2 steps. Deprotonation also happens when a small quantity is added. However, when an excess is added this is reversed and is followed my ligand exchange. Tetraamminediaquacopper (II) sulfate is formed as a royal blue solution. The complex chemistry involved is demonstrated and explained.
