This what i want to explain abt balinese gamelan, we used technical music instrument call "ngumbang-ngisep" thats come from a pair instrument that always come pair tunes, thats why part of balinese gamelan always have pair component like double gangsa, double kendang, double jegogan. For the low tunes instrument play melody and the front phyloponic instrument plays the creation with same times with 4 note or more for one beat of low instrument. And for one beat gong is include 16 beats of low tunes instrument. One instrument phyloponic in front that have different height have task to keeping the primer music, and the side instrument from the height one have task plays creation with different tehnic calls "ngotek" and "nyangsih" its come from plays higher tone and primer creation sometimes with same beat sometimes it can plays different beat,, The balinese drum or we ussually call kendang have important task to command when the tempos come fast or slow one. There one instrument that have task to keep tempos and beat continuosly call "kajar" this instrument plays just like we beat table to control music just play to match the beat.,,,

Hello Uncle Frank, I use google translate, the most complete gamelan instruments in the Java area are balungan, kenong, bonang, rebab, gong (super bass), the more to the east of Indonesia the variety of instruments decreases but the taste is more emotional, as well as further west, the area Sumatra leaves only bonang. greetings from Java Indonesia.

Ditempat saya jawa paling timur (Banyuwangi) Gamelan sini lbh mirip ama gamelan bali sih, yg dipakai buat kesenian JANGER.. cuman penyesuaian ekspresi saja sih, yg bikin terlihat beda.. banyuwangi-bali lbh dominan suara melengking/nada tinggi, sedangkan kebanyakan jawa lbh ke suara middle-low/nada rendah.. tp secara keseluruhan sangat mirip, cuma beda di kreatifitas aja..

i've learn gamelan in my junior high school in East Java. as far as I know gamelan was created by Batara Guru in 167 Saka (or 230 AD), a god who ruled as king of all Java from a palace at Wukir Mahendra Giri in Medang Kamulan (now Gunung Lawu). Batara Guru created a gong as a signal to summon the gods. For a more complex message, he later created two other gongs, thus forming a complete gamelan set. Gamelan has a pentatonic scale in the slendro and pelog scales system. According to Javanese mythology, the Slendro Gamelan is older than the Pelog Gamelan. Slendro has 5 (five) notes per octave, namely 1 2 3 4 5 (C-D E+ G A) with the same interval or even if they differ, the interval difference is very small. Pelog has 7 (seven) notes per octave, namely 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 (C+ D E- F# G# A B) with large interval differences. Gamelan instruments were introduced to form a complete set of musical instruments and developed during the Majapahit Kingdom era, and spread to various regions such as Bali, Sunda, and Lombok. Although Gamelan is a multi-timbre ensemble, when we were in junior high school we were just learning the idiophone and membranophone instruments: four types that are similar to the xylophone (saron, demung, peking, slenthem (in order of the highest note)), three types that are round in shape (kenong, bonang barung, bonang panerus), and two gong-like species (kempul, gong)

The pace is much faster with the Balinese Gamelan as compared to the Javanese and Sundanese Gamelan. There are so call the classics one but now days, they do have a modern or new ones.
