For verbal descriptions, I would focus on the five senses, and remind the players how much they can or can't know for certain. "You creep down the dark tunnel; the sound of your boots striking the stone floor feels defeaning. You feel a damp, musty breeze from somewhere deep inside the cavern. Then, you see a faint green glow. The pungent smell of rotten meat wafts over to you. It seems more difficult to move, as if the floor is covered in mud. You pull on your feet and realize that you're stuck..."

When I use spiders in my game sessions I describe the sound of *skittering". Be sure to use that word. Not only does it give a great description of what's ahead but it literally makes some players skin crawl.
