Beckenbauer played Libero, in WM1966 with broken arm midfield. NOBODY until today can play passes with outside of the foot over 50 Meters so exactly. Furthermore Beckenbauer won WC1990 as a trainer. So he won all what was possible. Euro, World Championship, Champions League...

The reason he was able to dribble like that was because he was an attacking midfielder up to age 25-26. So, it has nothing to do with him being a defender. If a manager had switched Cruyff, Maradona, George Best and many other giants of the game from their natural position to a central defender, would it be shocking to notice they could dribble at ease while playing as a defender?!!

The definition of " cool ". Beckenbauer was football's king of cool. Totally unruffled, even under the most trying of circumstances. He had the lot. Fantastic reading of the game. Immaculate passing dribbling heading shooting techniques. His paint brush stroked passes, with the outstep of the boot, was the stuff off Rembrandt brush strokes. Definitely one of the ten best players I've ever seen.

It was the golden era of a Libero or Sweeper, a ball playing defender who has more freedom than other defender and can dictate the pace from down the line or rush forward to help the offense. In modern football this role was replace by deep lying playmaker. Backenbauer and Scirea was best in this extinct position.
