The weather is unpredictable, the thunderstorms and lightening are spectacular! But when we get our summer, it gets pretty hot and we all head for the lake. Or some of us brave the meltwater of the glacier and jump in the waiho!!

Absolutely love seeing all those waterfalls as you drive. Not sure how scared I would have been if I was in that car though, I am a scary cat lol. Airbnb is si cute, cabin style! so awesome, and breakfast included? That is a treat. Walking to the glacier a bit more. Yes, all the glaciers are melting at a rapid tie, we were happy to know there was 1 glacier in Alaska that is one of the only ones that aren't melting, and instead, gaining space.

Wow, I'm surprised at how far back the glaciers are now. I saw them in 1988, when they were relatively easy to see on a rare rainless day (the West Coast gets around 10m of rain per annum - that's 10,000mm, or for those still using feet: 32' 9" (393") Of. Rain. Every. Year.
@PeterandYen4 жыл бұрын
They would've still looked really impressive back in 1988 I bet! We were shocked to see just how little of Franz Josef glacier was left given that it use to go right up to that roped off area we were standing at 🙁

I can totally relate to the emotions you felt about the glaciers. I first saw them in 2006 then again in 2015. It broke my heart to see the dramatic change. We hear about climate change all the time, but seeing real evidence of it was a bit of a wake up call. It affected me so much that I've since dramatically changed my lifestyle and my diet. I've also quit being a dentist to study environmental science. My hope is that my children will still get to see the glaciers 💪💚 Thank you for the brilliant content as always. In 2008-2009, my brother lived in Wanaka for just over 6 months to learn how to fly helicopters (apparently, it was cheaper to live in NZ for 6 months and learn how to fly there than to take the same lessons here in Europe, but really he did it to get a good taste of New Zealand). He flew us very close to one of the glaciers there (don't ask me which one). Very impressive to see them from up close. Then again, it feels kind of silly to use a CO2-spewing device to have a closer look at a glacier that is melting because of global warming... Here's to hoping electric planes and helicopters quickly become usable! Anyway, thanks again for the lovely video! Love it!

No drones for sure.. too close and dangerous with all the helicopters that do the scenic flights. South Island has extra strict drone rules so we didn't even bother to bring ours on this trip!

It's so sad to see how things are affected by global warming and in such a relatively small amount of time! but the views of the glacier were still very pretty 😃

Oh man I went to the glacier in the 90s as well 😟 Global warming is such a thing 😰

Yea we can't believe there are people that still don't believe in global warming or climate change when there are so many documentaries that show its effects on the planet. Seeing it with own eyes is really saddening! 🙁
