Perhaps this section is about peaceful death - going out slowly in your sleep, surrounded by family and friends.

Well Liszt was very religious, so he think very optimistically about death actually, it can be seen in the 3rd movement of his 13th symphonic poem

11:24 he quoted the La Folia chord progression here. La Folia is one of the oldest melodies and harmonic progressions in European recorded history, and countless composers have made pieces on it, including Liszt in his Spanish Rhapsody. edit: Dies Irae also fits under that chord progression which is weirdly satisfying.
@cubycube9924 Жыл бұрын
I knew this piece had dies irae but didn’t know that it has a specific different chord progression, interesting
@Chromaticon7 ай бұрын
La Folia is not the source for this. Liszt uses an exact setting of the Dies Irae chant by Louis Homet, in which the odd-numbered verses are sung in chant while the even-numbered verses employ four-part chordal harmony. Liszt uses this harmony to create a new set of variations in this part.

You know it’s actually crazy how good and sophisticated that progression is, especially considering it being one of the oldest 🤯

I feel like this piece’s percussiveness predates Bartók’s own style. It wouldn’t surprise me if Liszt was one of Bartók’s inspirations.

You know what's really crazy about this.... as mad as this music sounds to us , imagine how mad it would sounds to old timers of that era, who were used to hearing the likes of Bach and Mozart. Then pieces like this come along and give the middle finger to traditional harmony, form, and sanity. 👹 there was probably some musical guys, born in 1770, when Mozart was only 14, grew up with Mozart, and ultimately heard Dance of Death... right around the time of their death.

Ok, I thought this was the 1849 version when I found it, but great recording nevertheless. Noseda gets it right here, he is uneven in the symphonic poems.
